View Full Version : Best FfH Shadow game-play Story Contest

Here's a contest to celebrate FfH year two. Write a story based on a game of Shadow, and post it in this forum:
stories and tales (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=167)
Here is an example:
Forging of the Kuriotates (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=181967)

No particular requirements, other than that I can understand it--use English, punctuate now and then, edit if needed, etc.

Advice:
1) Don't start right away, you probably want to wait for a patch or two.
2) You should have some pics (hit [prtScrn] key in-game, pics are stored here: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots on your computer, probably.) How many is up to you (probably less than I did in the example)
3) It can be more story or more strategy as you like, but should have a bit of each.
4) Length is not an critical, nor do you need to play to victory.

Judge's decision (mine) is final, one winner will get a prize worth about $25.
Deadline will be January 31. Start a thread in the Stories and Tales sub forum (in case you haven't figured out, I'm using you as advertisement ;)) and post a link in this thread.

Hmm, Jan 31, eh? I might have to make my first game a Quick one...

Sounds fun! You can expect an entry from me, and I'll even spellcheck! I know, I'm too kind.

Okay, I got my first taste of the Amurites recently. That random map game was brought to an early demise, though, due to a perpetual "Waiting for other civs" problem. I'm going to deliberately choose them for this contest. And, I'll use your map, of course.

Now, do I want to mess with the Barbarian settings again?....

Well I started one up. No idea how it will go.

Good thing I dug this thread up from page 2. I will give this a go, since I like doing AARs but I rarely do em (and almost never finish), and I need to practice on my story telling.

This contest is still going right?

Good idea to post in Stories and Tales forum, will be good advertisement! I think the mods, and mods in general would have more players if more just knew more about them. And FfH is in such a shape that it is pretty user friendly by now.

Yup, still going. I gave some time in case you're a procrastinator like me.

This looks fun! Do I have to use full size screenshots, or can I crop them?

vorshlumpf
Dec 26, 2007, 12:31 PM
Definitely crop them. And, if possible, put the image embedded within the post. I'm too lazy to click on image links when I'm reading these things.

How do you put screenshots? here do you upload them, at which resolution..?

Grey Fox
Jan 01, 2008, 06:10 PM
I upload them using CFC's easy upload system. I crop my images so I just show whats important, and then I reduce the size to 80% of original. And I play at 1280x1024.

I try to keep my images small enough so they don't take up too much space, and if they do I keep em in a spoiler tag. I don't like it if I make a horizontal scrollbar, and I only use 2/3rds of the screen with my browser.

Anyways, my story is now done. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=256432)

I added some FfH background story entries to some of the older posts, and the Amelanchier pedia entry to my last post. Cause it was fitting. :)
And I wrote a short fictional element at the end, so that it's not all just descriptional. Hope you like it.

After I finish my current game I may do a quick one as Pepentark and try to role-play whatever traits he happens to have at a given time.

I'm finally back from vacation, so now I can start my story! At the same time it'll be my first Shadow game since I hadn't had the chance to try it out yet.

Here's my entry:

Hmm. This sounds quite entertaining. And ironic, because I'd already been considering doing this.

Not make a contest, that is, but write a report/story.

Unfortunately I go on vacation (computer-less vacation, mind) soon so I might not have time to. But I shall definitely have to try and see if I can! So with any luck maybe I can put in a contribution.

So yeah, decided to give this a go, as an experiment. We'll see how it pans out when all is said and done. :D

A Tale of Erebus told (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=258445)

By yours truly. Not much to look at yet, my friends kidnapped me just as I was getting started, but I'll add more to it when I have the time to. :crazyeye:

And, speaking of. Someone who's less of a nooblet than me might be able to tell me how I can attach more than five pictures to the posts I make. I know it's doable, but apparently I've not been able to figure out how. When I used the Attachments function in the Message box it would only let me add the five and then it said no-no. Which would mean I would have to split my writing into a whole lot of posts if I want to have more than five pictures in each, which I do. So.. Help!

You could upload them to a free image host and then put the links into your post.
For example:

thealien_83
Jan 11, 2008, 07:26 PM
Well.. I could do that. But looking at the other entries in this thread, at least 3/4 clearly have more than five images in each post in their contributions. So it is obviously doable, and I'm just too big of a dunce to figure out how.

I used imageshack for mine. It's the easiest I think (that or photobucket).

Has anyone been able to get this to run with patch f installed? I put the save game for Noble difficulty in my save games folder. It appears in the list of single player games, but when I try to load I get a crash to disk. Does this require any other mod than FfH to run peroperly?

What patch/version for BTS is the save game using?

I don't use Bhruic's Unofficial Patch...could this be the problem?

I don't use Bhruic's Unofficial Patch...could this be the problem?Hmm, I think you were aiming for my other thread... but I'm pretty sure I have patch f installed--yes, according to the readme--and I always make sure a version loads before posting it.. But I'd love to make any changes to make it more widely accessible if you are having problems...

I feel so stupid...patched the game up to "g" before checking if it breaks saves :(

Does anybody still have patch "f"?

Patch F will still be hosted most likely, just look at the file name for Patch G, and change the G to an F.

I'd really like it if someone was willing to host all the old versions.

I'm really talking Light and Fire (.21 and .22, before Fire was streamlined and finalized to make .23). They have code for mechanics which have been removed which would still be quite valuable for modmoders.

So so!

I'm back in action now, home from my vacation (albeit a day later than intended, thank you very much Northwest Airlines). And dying to find out how this biz went down. Yeah, I'm a geek, I know. But the final date of the contest is up, the audience (and contributors! >.>) demand to know the outcome. Listen to the crowds cheering..! :D

Ozvbenno's Elves put on a good show pounding their enemies with hammer-wielding spiders,
Rex rgis' shades subdued the land, but then we never heard from them again,
and Grey Foxs' Svartalfar Elves made an exciting last stand.
In the end it was a toss up (literally) between Evernoob's Grigori snatching a pyrrhic victory from the jaws of a peaceful defeat ;) and thealien 83's Clan of Embers short but eventful and very well described conquest.

Honorable mention to everyone, thanks for the free entertainment and advertising ;), but the winner is...

It's been a blast participating in this, both writing my own stuff and reading what everyone else wrote. It was definitely a sterling idea, so I say let's hear it for Nikis-Knight for coming up with it! :goodjob:
