View Full Version : Changing the Terrain Graphics
Lloyien Dec 16, 2007, 06:14 AM I hadn't seen a thread about it yet, so I figured I'd go ahead and ask: how do you change the terrain graphics in 0.30?
I've been using Blue Marble since Light, and it's what I'm both used to, and what I prefer. Does anyone know how to get it to override the Mod's terrain?
zxcvbnm Dec 16, 2007, 06:27 AM Take the terrain graphics files from older version and replace the new files with them.

If you wouldn't mind, could you be a little more specific? In Assets/XML, there's the Terrain folder (which I strongly suggest not replacing with older versions' Terrain folders), and then in Assets/XML/Art there is Civ4ArtDefines_Terrain.xml. Should I replace this? Or am I on the wrong track?
zxcvbnm Dec 16, 2007, 07:10 AM ...\firaxis\civ4\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\art\terrain\textures
contains
[terraintypehere]blend.dds
[terraintypehere]grids.dds
etc.
files
Replace them with older ones
Lloyien Dec 16, 2007, 07:35 AM Figured it out. Blue Marble installs to My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CustomAssets\art\terrain\Textures.
To use these textures in FfH II 0.30, you need to copy the Textures folder and put it into Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\Art\terrain.
As far as I can tell, this will make 0.30 use the Blue Marble textures for base terrain (grassland, plains, desert, etc.), but does not replace forest/jungle textures.
Falc Dec 16, 2007, 09:19 AM Actually, where on earth does FfH 2.030 install their terrain files???
I don't have any terrain .dds files anywhere in my FfH 2.030folder yet they're clearly working in game...
Saroumana Dec 16, 2007, 01:31 PM I have the same problem.
there no terrain\textures in \civ4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\Art\ for the 2.030. I have look in 2.025 folder and i just have files for BrokenLands and FieldsOfPerdition terrain.
snarko Dec 16, 2007, 02:00 PM I assume they're in Pak0.FPK along with just about all the other graphic.
AndrewDJ Dec 17, 2007, 06:51 PM I'd really like to know how to change this, because honestly? I f***king  HATE:mad: the new look.

Now, now. Let's stay civil, shall we? A lot of hard work was put into those graphics...just, they're hard on my eyes. If you used the Blue Marble terrain pack (and I would honestly suggest you take a look at it!), you can take the graphics straight from Beyond the Sword\CustomAssets\art\terrain\Textures.
What you need to do then is create the 'terrain' folder in Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\Art, and copy over the Textures folder to there. This will replace the base terrain art (plains, grassland, coast, desert, etc.) I have no yet found the graphics for jungles and forests, but hills appear fine.
MagisterCultuum Dec 17, 2007, 11:59 PM We still need better ancient forests (and I still think that the current ancient forests color/texture would be better for new forests)
seZereth Dec 18, 2007, 06:36 AM tastes are different and thats fine, so i you wanna go back:
All textures are in the pak files,
if you wanna modify them, you will have to unpak and edit them.
If you want to override them,
go to your install directory (e.g. C:\games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword)\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\Art\terrain\textures\
and then put all files you want to replace into it. thats it. (if the directory does not exist, create it!)
If you need to replace the trees, go to
your install directory (e.g. C:\games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword)\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 030\Assets\Art\shared\
I still think those textures are far more fitting and I am aware of the fact, that you have to get used to them until you see every game relevant stuff as fast as you did with the old graphics you were used to. Nevertheless I think its only a matter of short time.
I fixed some stuff:

sorry for causing some inconveniencies for those who dislike them :p
Lloyien Dec 18, 2007, 09:10 AM Thank you, seZereth. :)
Your work has been, and is, greatly appreciated. And so is your help in this matter.
onedreamer Dec 18, 2007, 09:17 AM When people feel comfortable with something and get used to it, they won't like a change ;)
dot Dec 18, 2007, 11:03 AM I for one do. At first sight I thought *YACK*. Boy, with the terrain changes it's really hard to distinguish the basics, improvements and all the stuff. But After having played a couple of hours there's only one statement to make:
I absolutely dig the new terrain! Gives the game an even more ancient feeling. Thank you, seZereth!
Vielen, vielen herzlichen Dank nach Bayreuth. ;)
xienwolf Dec 18, 2007, 11:59 AM Yeah, don't forget all of us who already tried out the terrain before Shadow and gave you accolades and much Love :) We are still here and enjoy the new terrain, just the other fellows are the loud ones right now, so it SEEMS like people hate it ;P Probably still a majority that prefer them, especially over Blue Marble.
Silverkiss Dec 18, 2007, 12:15 PM I've not played many games yet, but this new terrain surely is better; it adds to the feel of Dark Fantasy. Thank you, seZ :)
JayThomas Dec 18, 2007, 12:26 PM At first, I was taken aback by the new terrain. After awhile though I really got to like the look. It fits the game better. Now, to me, the previous terrain seems kind of cartoony.
Thanks for the outstanding effort seZ.
seZereth Dec 18, 2007, 05:23 PM We still need better ancient forests (and I still think that the current ancient forests color/texture would be better for new forests)
for a new ancient forest graphic, have a look at this post:

strategyonly Dec 18, 2007, 05:30 PM Only problem i see with the Ancient Forest is the height of them, its really hard to see any resources and sometimes hard to see the units themselves? Maybe its just me?? Other than that they look great. Just that darn height!!
ChaoticWanderer Dec 18, 2007, 05:45 PM I hate the new look totally it actually takes away my ability to plan if i have to figure out what is jungle what is forest where hills are its annoying
JayThomas Dec 18, 2007, 06:23 PM I haven't had any problem telling the difference between forest/jungle. The different hill types maybe, but that was with the old look too; desert vs hill esp.
thomas.berubeg Dec 18, 2007, 06:24 PM I really like the new terrain!
onedreamer Dec 19, 2007, 02:47 AM I wanted to congratulate with seZereth for the new terrain graphics, I really like them, they suit the background perfectly. As usual, well done :goodjob:
Kael Dec 21, 2007, 09:08 PM Note that with patch "c" players can choose to use seZ's default fantasy terrain or revert back to Kai's BlueMarble terrain.
Bitwise Dec 21, 2007, 10:35 PM I also enjoy the new graphics, once I became accustomed to them. Very appropriate.
Saroumana Dec 22, 2007, 03:36 AM Note that with patch "c" players can choose to use seZ's default fantasy terrain or revert back to Kai's BlueMarble terrain.
Thank kael !
Chip56 Dec 22, 2007, 06:39 AM I have only one problem with the new art:
You cant see AV-improvments on hell.
Broken Hawk Dec 23, 2007, 06:54 PM So how do you unpack the *.pak file? Some of the art would make great wallpaper.
As I said in another thread, seZ's work is great.
