View Full Version : World War II Cartoons banned from TV
sween32 Jun 21, 2002, 08:05 PM Mockery and racism towards the enemy has always been a way to show Patriotism, but these days it is not seen in children's cartoons and rightfully so... These cartoons from World War II have been banned from television. I do not condone children or persons uneducated in World War history to watch these movies.
- Donald Duck dreams he's a Nazi, 1943
- Bugs Bunny fights the Japanese, 1944
- Popeye fights the Japanese, 1942

I'm only hosting these cartoons for about a week so come and get them!
Thuloid Jun 22, 2002, 02:46 PM I liked those cartoons. What's wrong with presenting the WW2 Axis powers as bad? Weren't they?
Making fun of an enemy isn't just displaying patriotism. Bear in mind that during WW2 our victory was very much in doubt and there was a lot of fear. These cartoons helped in some small measure to relieve some of those fears. That kind of propaganda is pretty psychologically important.

I sort of agree. There's nothing wrong with taking potshots at Hilter. Mind you some of the portrayals of Japanese people in these cartoons are somewhat ugly, and not really war-related.
sween32 Jun 22, 2002, 08:02 PM Oh, I know. But could you imagine showing these cartoons on the Disney Channel or Nickolodean now? Nah-ah. A cartoon discriminating the Taliban would cause an uproar with soccer-moms across the globe.
Those cartoons from WWII were completely appropriate for the time to boost the countries trust in their military and their cause. Now that we are proven to be the major power of the world, that is not necessary... and we've gotten soft on our enemy.
Mind you, I have to say those things on the site just incase somebody outside of CivFanatics stumbles upon it. Viewers of this site know exactly why these cartoons were made, but the average War-time-uneducated persons wouldn't.
Switch625 Jun 22, 2002, 08:10 PM Got 'em! Thanks!
napoleon526 Jun 22, 2002, 08:44 PM Ha ha! Those are hilarious, in a very sick kind of way!
Kramerman Jun 23, 2002, 03:22 AM the portrayal of the Japanese was kinda rediculous, but I loved it. The donald duck one that made fun of fascism was my favorite. Then the Buggs Bunny was right behind it, and then I didn't really understand the Pop-eye one. Seemed kinda random to me.

I agree with you completely, once again. I can laugh at those cartoons because I get the jokes and stereotypes, and I understand that they are just that. But it probably wouldn't be good to show those to children, it might indoctrinate them to hate them long after the war is over, kinda of like racism is most prevelant in the south even long after the Civil War. The children then were just brought up to hate something and then they brought up their children that way and so on.:crazyeye: Kinda makes you crazy thinking about human behavior. Fascinating though.

Kramerman Jun 23, 2002, 03:26 AM sysyphus,
for some reason everytime i glance past your name I read "syphilus". And my reaction every time is, what type of sicko would name himself that. Then after the quick check, I realize that is not your name. I apologize for always thinking your name is syphilus.

sween32 Jun 23, 2002, 09:50 AM The Donald Duck one is my favorite, too.
Then again, I love everything Donald Duck. He's my favorite character ever, probably because we both have Napolean complexes.
I'm 22 years old and my apartment is full with Donald Duck figures and toys, so it's cool to see the only Donald cartoon to win an Acadamy Award. And the fact that it's banned makes it better.
Ozz Jun 23, 2002, 05:55 PM Thanks For the toons
De Lorimier Jun 23, 2002, 07:06 PM Yeah Sween thanks a lot. It's fun to take a look at old propaganda images and study them... I think the precedent posters said the right things about the cartoons. If anyone else finds something like this please post !

Thuloid Jun 24, 2002, 01:44 AM Sisyphus is a figure from Greek mythology. He was rather sneaky and dishonest, and got rewarded for his betrayal of the gods by getting to push a huge rock up a hill for all eternity.
Kramerman Jun 24, 2002, 03:51 AM Ah yes, I remember learning about him along with that other guy who always tried to drink the water but but it would receed away before he could touch it. Thanks thuloid, whatever the hell that is?
Thuloid Jun 24, 2002, 12:54 PM A thuloid (common noun) is a wiggly kind of appendage on one's chin. Thuloid (proper noun) is the king of Esquiland. Thuloid has a large thuloid.
Kramerman Jun 24, 2002, 02:23 PM Thats disgusting!
Thuloid has a large thuloid.
Were you refering that King thuroid has a thuroid, or thuroid as in you have a thuroid?
Thuloid Jun 24, 2002, 06:26 PM I myself do not have a thuloid. But, in theory, Thuloid, king of Esquiland and Great Khan of Silesia, has a thuloid. Nobody is quite sure whether it was named after him, or vice versa.

The guy who couldn't drink the water was Tantulus (I think.) I also think he had fruit above his head that he couldn't reach.
On-Topic These cartoons are taking along time. I hope they are worth it.
Greeny Jun 26, 2002, 02:24 PM On the subject of WW2 / cartoons, my maths teacher rekons that Walt Disney himself was some kind of Nazi sympathiser / anti-semite at some point. Anyone else heard of this theory?
May give a new perspective on the Donald duck cartoon, ain't seen it yet tho damn 56k modem...
Kramerman Jun 26, 2002, 02:48 PM Ive heard nothing about that, but I've heard Henry Ford, who was a well known Strong Chrisitian, was a anti semite and gave Hitler somewhat of a bargain on a bunch of ford transport trucks during the early/mid 30s.
HotDog Fish Jun 26, 2002, 03:21 PM Yup good old' Ford, Disney and even our own former PM McKenzie King where all anti-semites, but King had an excuse, the man was CRAZY!!!! He had a personal psychic so he could talk to his dead mother, even Churchill thought King was 'A little son of a *****'
