OK, I just started playing RoM and I absolutely love it, think it's the best mod out there (and I have tried a few!) I came to the forums looking for an answer to a question, but didn't see any thread devoted to general questions. So I figured I'd start one.

Here's my (probably really basic) question (for today):

The Sewer System improvement has a few features. One feature is that it gives you a "-20% Defense against Espionage." Another feature is that it "Helps thwart rival spies." The first makes sense; when you build tunnels under your city it makes it easier to infiltrate undetected. However, doesn't that contradict the second feature that it helps thwart rival spies? Perhaps I'm unclear on the Espionage terminology, but wouldn't helping to thwart rival spies actually be a BONUS to defense against Espionage (and would probably make less sense)?

Thanks! Keep up the good work! More questions later.

(BTW, in case you're wondering, I'm running the latest version, at least the latest version as of this past weekend when I downloaded and installed it.)

This is actually "bug" in BtS - it does not have different text option if you put negative modifier to defense against espionage, it'll just always say "helps thwart rival spies" while in Sewer System's case this isn't true - So the -20% modifier is true, not the text part. I'd fix this if I knew how, probably would require SDK changes which I can't do myself.

Ah, understood. It really doesn't make sense as it stands and there's nothing in the "Sid's Tips" section of the Civopedia page whatsoever. Maybe you could try and add something there if you can find the time.

And speaking of things you could try and add if you can find the time...

That sure is a lot of civics you have there. How hard would it be to incorporate something somewhere which told you what the final bonuses come out to? Preferably on the civics page itself so you could see the effects that choosing "Heriditary Rule" along with "Caste System" along with "Public Schools" would have on your research and food and productivity and GP and...! I remember changing civics and then realizing that my cities were starving, I had forgotten that I had a food bonus from a civic that I had just dumpted. I'm working on a stand-alone program to do just that (currently in the "preliminary research," also known as the "neat idea, hope somebody else does it before I get tired of waiting," phase) but I'd have no idea how to incorporate it into a mod even if that was possible.

And on a completely different topic, I'm wondering about the removal of culture bonuses from nearly all buildings. Not that I mind all that much (except when I want to expand the borders of an early city and a [standard culture-producing] Library would be really helpful), I don't worry much about culture normally. The only issue I have with it has to do with two of the science-enhancing buildings, the University and the Observatory. The University costs more than the Observatory, which was balanced out in vanilla CivIV by the culture bonus. Now that RoM has eliminated the culture bonus, the two buildings are essentially identical in effect although one costs more. Wassup wit 'at? Perhaps upping the University bonus slightly (say, to +30% or +35% even) would even things out. Your (or anyone's) thoughts on this?

Wow ... I didn't even know this was even possible.

I'm playing the latest version of RoM as the English, and I've got the Incas as a vassal state (after wiping the planet with them about a thousand years ago). Their capitol was just across the border from one of my strongest culture cities. Their city revolted and decided to join the powerful English empire.

Is this something RoM has added? I always knew you could convert other nation's cities, but I was always under the impression that converting the capitol of the other nation was impossible. Or is it just if it's their "last city?"

Not that I'm disappointed, mind you. I actually wasn't even trying to convert them, it just sorta happened. :mischief:

OK, another question.

I'm considering building a Coal Plant in one of my cities, so I go to the 'pedia to find out about it. Now, up in the top, it briefly says "Cost: 150 :hammers:," and right below that it says "Unhealthy: +2 :yuck:." All well and good.

HOWEVER, below the picture, in the "Special Abilities" section, it says "Provides Power with Coal (+4 :yuck:)." Well is it +2 or +4? So, I'm probably going to build it and try to figure out whether it's +2 :yuck:, +4 :yuck:, or maybe a cumulative +6 :yuck:? A little clarification might be in order in the 'pedia, and maybe a little explanation here.

Thanks!

I also questioned some of the bonuses. Like building a Port in 1918 gives a
+42 Happy according to the popup. I never checked to see if it was true, but I assumed not.

As to the culture bonus not being there, I think it is. But for some reason that doesn't show up on the popup in the build screen. If you look on the city screen it should be there.

I've noticed large bonuses like that as well. I thought that it was adding up all of the bonuses you get for resources and such, and letting you know what the actual effect would be. I was wrong.

I just tested it out, and although building a Port said that it would give me +20 :) it actually only gave me two additional (according to the totals at the top of the city screen, at least). It is still listed as +20 in the city screen, though. Seems like a bug to me.

You are correct in that it is in the city screen. However, given the discrepancy noted just above, I will have to do further testing to see whether that is actually reflected in the culture of the city.

Thanks!
