I just installed BtS expansion for the first time and updated it to the latest patch. But when I start the game it comes up with several XML Load Error dialogues during InitXML. For example, the first message that comes up saysFailed Loading XML file xml\text\civ4gametext_bts_fourthroundtranslation.x ml. [.\FXml.cpp:133] Error parsing XML File etc, etc.. There are about 7 of these before the game loads. Inside the game, many names are incorrect, such as leader names, which show up as INIT_KEY_... and description keys for buildings are also sometimes messed up as well. I've tried clearing the cache, but the problem remains. I've tried reinstalling, and still the same. Help...

ok this is the right version. Now please open the civilizationIV.ini for Beyond the Sword and set everything with log in its name to 1, then start a new game and exit again. then post the content of your logs directory (my games\beyond the sword\logs)

I also had XML issues, but was resolved on a reinstall. See this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=256169) thread for more details.

how did you go about reinstallling? Did you just remove the game using the control panel or did you do something else as well?

i went to the control panel to uninstall and then reinstalled afterwards.

unfortunately this is not a way to completely get rid of corrupted installs, try this (its a re-post from a few dozen other threads - but I don't feel like recompiling it ;))

I would also recommend this - but make sure to make a really clean reinstall like I listed in the post I repost below - just omit anything for expansions you don't have :newyear:
If you do not have BtS you should patch to 1.74 and 2.13 ONLY after installing 1.61 and 2.08 respectively.

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en)

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Vanilla
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS) (note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Vanilla, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3))
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3344))
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.13 (download it fresh from here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7412)).

I did all this and the result was the same. The errors for XML kept on popping up.

I know this feels redundant - but since I don't have many ideas, I'd like to see if anything in the complete logs gives any indication:
please open civilizationIV.ini (e.g. my games\beyond the sword\civilizationIV.ini) and set all items with log in their name to 1, then try starting a game, after that fails post the content of my games\beyond the sword\logs as a zip file.
I have to admit though that I am at a loss :(

How do you configure Windows Explorer to show hidden files?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Now I have deleted everything off my comp. I install disc 1 for Civ IV and instead of it asking me to install, it is asking me to play. Of course nothing happens when I click play. How do I get it to install?

if the game did not allow you to remove it through the control panel you also need to manually delete the registry entries, look here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6311579&postcount=783).

Thank you very much Ori. I will do this as soon as I get home after work. Just curious but will CIV IV and the expanisons play on a Mac, or will you need to load up boot camp and Windows XP on the Mac?

I bought Civ IV and BtS at the same time a few weeks ago. When I loaded up Civ 4 I had no problems at all. I did not patch to the current patch, but after a few hours of play it started crashing after several turns.

Then I loaded up BtS and had no problems, but it also started crashing after several hours. So I did an uninstall/reinstall and uploaded the patches.

Now I cannot even load either game. Once I put in discs 1 I get...

Loading Error
Caught unhandled exception creating XML parser object Current XML is:

I uninstalled again and reinstalled and I am getting the same message with CiV 4 and BtS.

Now I have two problems. First getting the game to actually play and then if it does it crashing after every few turns.

Any suggestions? This is frustrating as hell.

My drivers are up to date. I was able to play the game fine, or at least load it up. My only problem was the game crashing and rebooting after several turns. Now the game will not even load at all.

I have followed all of Ori's suggestions. The game is loaded and patched correctly. Now I just cannot even get the game to load. This loading error keeps popping up, even after a system restore and a complete uninstall and reinstall. Before at least I was able to get the game to pop up.

Civ 4 and Warlords have been released for Mac - though the latest Warlords patch has not yet been released. BtS is not yet released on Mac and there is no official announcement yet as to when (if?) this will happen.
@Sattakan: I answered in one of the other threads,
