Well, the last one got locked so here is the newest.

I actually watched 3 movie today!!

I saw I Am Legend for the second time, and liked it just as mcu has the first. It was very intense.

I also saw Superbad for the second time, and thought it was even funnier than the first time. Definately one of the funniest movies ever.

I saw Fight Club for the first time and liked it quite a bit. It had it's ups and downs, but I actually really liked the ending.

I saw National Treasure 2. It was really outlandish. But I put my brain on not-think and it was okay. I saw it with friends and we made jokes about it, so it's cool.

Tomorrow I'm going to watch Pan's Labyrinth. I heard it was excellent.

You nailed it; NT2 is the type of movie which is best to watch with friends to ridicule it for mutual enjoyment.

Pan's Labyrinth isn't quite as suited for this though. :mischief:

As promised/threatened in the previous thread I have watched some Bollywoodesque movie to see more of the utterly stunning Aishwarya Rai, just getting my feet wet with some Bollywood light.

Bride and Prejudice (no that is not a typo)

Apparently by the makers of Bend it like Beckham it's a Bollywood take on Jane Austen's book. Fun movie, fun music, fun characters and I even shed a single, perfect tear at the happy end (yes I always get teary with romcoms and I am not ashamed to admit it).

Next stop on the Aishwarya Ra obsession express train: Guru

Here are my holiday movie reviews.

1. Sweeny Todd: Liked the movie, albeit you get what you expect; blood, blood and more blood. Great music, great visuals. Worth seeing if you are not squeemish.

2. Charlie Wilsons War. I actually liked this one. It gives some very poignant insight to that era and what was going on 'behind the scenes'. Not entirely true, but true enough to hit home. Very entertaining.

3. National Treasure 2. If you see it, go on a matinee price. Its the same movie basically as the first one with less clues and less originality. Ok, but entirely what you would expect from that type of sequel....i.e. they want to make money off the originals popularity and didnt really do anything innovative.

4. I am Legend. Like the movie overall. Didnt really like how the CGI portrayed the infected - it gave the movie that 'Beowulf' feel that I have a hard time getting into. Will Smith does a good job.

I wasn't trying to make an argument for it. I just saw the movie and stated my opinion, but if you really want to know...

The movie was full of cliche events, thoroughly predictable, so many things happened that made you grind your teeth in disgust and disbelief, a movie without a real climax, and perhaps the worst most nonsensical ending in the history of film.

...it barely qualifies as a movie, in my opinion. I will NEVER forgive Will Smith for that garbage.

I thought Casino Royale was a great movie!

Which one?

Well, it's an good movie, but there was this part in the middle that I found rather...boring. but I woke up at the appropriate time and saw the end part and all (the house sinking in venice was a nice effect)

But Today I saw "the Departed" and I must say this movie outclasses a lot of movies, the acting is great, the action is good, the story is very well written, the tension in the movie was very well paced. I did found the film editing a bit abrupt at times. (at least it wasn't the film editing like in gangs of New York where it seemed like The Butcher did the film editing himself )

1. I am Legend ; Pretty much total garbage. I read the original story by Richard Matheson and its was great. Definitely the inspiration for classic movies like "Night of the Living Dead". But the movie was typical CGI crap mixed with the "star power" of Will Smith.

2. Juno: Pretty good. Had some funny moments. Not a great comedy in the league of "The 40 Year Old Virgin", but definitely worth at least a rental once it comes out on DVD.

3. 28 Weeks Later: Rented this over X-Mas vacation and man, if you like a good nihilistic horror movie, you can't do much better. The first 15 minutes are about as good as you can get and it never lets you feel safe. Two thumbs up!

4. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry: I only agreed to watch this because Wifey rented it and begged me to join her. Plus I had just beaten the crap out of Shaka in my first Monarch game (Duel map), so I had some free time. It was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Had some funny moments. If you are not expecting the second coming of "Blazing Saddles" (In terms of laugh-out-loud comedy), you could do a lot worse.

5. No Country for Old Men: I am a BIG fan of Cormac McCarthy, so I had high hopes for this adaptation of his third-best book IMHO (Behind "Blood Meridian" and "The Road"). I was not disappointed. Great movie all around. Definitely worthy of Oscar consideration. The Coen brothers are almost always right on the money with their movies. Off-topic, but if you have read "The Road", you may be interested to know it is being made into a movie starring Vigo Mortenson (Aragon from the Lord of thee Rings) as "Father". If you have not read "The Road", do yourself a favor and buy it. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 and is one of the most haunting books you'll ever read.

Cheezy, im not completely sure but judging from his posts in other pages I would wager hes not a native English speaker.........

I saw I am legend, I personally thought it was great myself, I liked the book better but the movie and the book were far to different to really be comparable to each other. As many of you who have heard about it have probably already......heard:confused: the last third of the movie wasn't particularly engrossing. And the reasons for him becoming a legend in the movie wouldn't really make him a legend, in the book however, he literally becomes a legend and it was much more interesting. All of the night folk in the movie seemed stupid and incompetent which was not the case with the novel(or novella, is it short enough to be called that, or is there some other defining classification?). All in all, I would give it an 8 out of ten I suppose.

and the CGI was . .. .. .. .............

were at a disagreement here then :D

im a serious fan of Cronenberg's work, and this movie is one of his most communicative and accesible movies.

granted, some will say he is "selling out", etc, but its still a great movie.
it sort of links to History of Violence (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399146/).
another great movie, BTW.

this one has a great cast, a sharp plot, and excellent production (anywhere from photography to directing)

all in all, maybe NOT his BEST, but it sure kicks it as one of the top 10 movies i saw this year.
Cronenberg's mediocre output is usually better than the best movies around.

Maybe the fact that the main character is freaking indestructible and at the end falls from a skyscraper and lives?

;)Yeah, I know what you mean but in which action flick the main character isn't indestructable? Have you seen the new Die Hard movie example?

For me the point is that Bourne sometimes (example losing his girlfiend) is very desperate and basically "man in a mission" or "for revenge". Personally I wouldn't had minded even if Bourne had died in the end but then again Bourne is kind of character that is kind of "already dead" in terms of his life being hell after he steps into the program of becoming assassin.

I think example compared to Bond or MI movies Bourne is much more realistic (if you can use that term) or believable let alone some other action movies.

A documentary by Werner Herzog called "Little Dieter Needs To Fly".

Very good. 5/5
It's about us navy pilot, Dieter Dengler, who was shot down over Laos (?) and had to endure all kinds of torture for 5 months before he fled. Very inspirational story, I read somewhere that hollywood is gonna make a movie based on his story, starring that guy who was in the latest batman movie.

I saw Cloverfield. I thought it was fantastic. My friend threw up due to the "Blair Witch" style camera movements, haha.

I'm a victim of that one also. Note: Do not watch that on a gigantic theater screen that completely takes up your vision. Urgghhh...

So I only made it about halfway through. I'll try it again when it comes out for the small screen; I should have an easier time there.

It was awesomeness in movie form. I've never been so happy about people being blasted to bits before.

Whoever made that movie knew how to, not only set em up (bad guys = EVIL), but also how to knock them the frag down (bad guys = mincemeat).

Some movies can't get that balance right, and they are just frustrating to watch (example, Hostel. not nearly enough payback).

Since last posting about it, I can recall seeing the following that are worth mentioning:

~ Battle for Haditha: I thought it was excellent, with Nick Broomfield rightly taking the position that everyone was a victim. Using people actually involved in the events, or those like it, is an admirable continuation of the tradition of filmmaking process being one of reconciliation. Reminded me of Bloody Sunday, by Greengrass.

~ No Country for Old Men: Same opinion as others above. Needs seeing multiple times though, as with most Coen Bros films.

~ Stardust: Not as smaltzy as I expected. De Niro was brilliant as the gay pirate captain. What a character for him to play. Interesting pillaging of mythologies, especially the Algoquin and Iroquois tales of star people falling to earth and interacting with humans.

~ Sveto Mesto (Sacred Place): An awesome piece of Serbian horror, offering an Orthodox Christian take on the gothic horror tradition. With incest, necrophilia, horny witches and witchcraft, murderous feminists, lesbianism, weak willed priests...all given a retro look...what more could you want? It's based on a short story by Gogol, as is Mario Bava's Black Sunday/Mask of Satan btw, and is a fine example of Slavic "naive art" in storytelling form. It also got me onto reading Gogol's play The Inspector, which was great too.

~ The Harder They Come: I love the rough and ready style of 1970s Jamaican films (like Countryman), which makes a good case for substance over style. This offers a brutally honest depiction of Jamaican society, elitism in society in general and, of course, one kick ass soundtrack.

~ Any Given Sunday: This was surprisingly good actually. Even my good lady enjoyed it and she hasn't the first clue about, or interest in, American Football. I loved the sequence with Bill Withers' Use Me.

Hitman: Yeah, I went for the quality again. Olyphant is as good as always - when he wants there's no one in Hollywood who can look as menacing as him. Movie itself was okay if you're looking for a dumb brainless action flick (which I luckily was at that moment).

Beowulf: Some nice visuals, big troll and nude (in a way) Angelina Jolie were the best parts. Especially the middle of the movie dragged really bad. Not much of a disappointment though as my expectations were quite low.

30 Days of Night: Unless you either must see all the movies with vampires or you're interested in spotting stupidities in films you might want to avoid this one (my excuse is closer to the first). From the start nothing really makes sense in this one: vamps are dumb, people are dumb and the passing of days can only be seen by occasional "DAY XX" texts on screen (nothing would have changed if this had happened during just one regular night).

Straw Dogs: Watched this one again as it came from TV. Not exactly a masterpiece (I think Peckinpah is somewhat overhyped) but still one of the few bearable films with Dustin Hoffman. Double standards and hypocrisy get an ok treatment.

Bourne Ultimatum: Worst of the Bourne films. Can't really think of much more to say.

The Brave One: Nothing spectacular but Neil Jordan and Jodie Foster can hardly end up with a complete disaster. It was somewhat 80's (on a film like this that's a good thing) and followed closely on a footsteps of Death Wish and other old time vigilante films. Thumbs up for the attitude.

Sweeney Todd: Like everything done by Tim Burton The Demon Barber looks astonishing. Another of his trademarks is also present as the story is a bit on the thin side. Film is quite theatrical but what would you expect of a musical. Mostly the song scenes were good but I really didn't like Anthony's voice nor the Johanna song he did twice. Not a masterpiece but easily worth the 2 hours.

A few nights ago my wife and I watched the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. My thoughts:

Bland, bland, bland. The first two were entertaining; perhaps not the most memorable movies ever, but about what one should expect from a summertime action/adventure flick. Funny, improbable, with some originality, and what isn't original is still executed well.

This final one, on the other hand, was excruciating to watch. Almost completely bereft of the humor that kept the first two chugging along, and what little was left was lame--gags with the monkey, gags with the dwarf, and gags revolving around Capt. Sparrow's increasingly flamboyant madness (complete with doppelgangers!). The filmmakers seemed to have bitten off more than they could chew with the convoluted storyline, and it took them two and a half hours to sort out the mess. The eventual resolution wasn't clean,it wasn't pretty, it wasn't fun, and it just dragged on and on and on and on...the movie honestly seemed to last a whole hour longer than it actually did.

Been watching quite a few films in the past nights.

The Constant Gardener (Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz) - A good drama looking at the harsh realities of Africa and the help it receives.

The Inside Man (Clive Owen, Denzel Washington) A clever crime/heist film. Simply entertaining.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany) - Adventure/Action film portraying life onboard a British Navy ship in the Napoleanic Wars.

I don't like to rate films out of simply 5 or 10... but suffice to say that Rotten Tomatoes ranks then all around 85% 'fresh'. :goodjob:

The Bank Job

Go see it. It's not some idiotic teen bank robber movie with lots of high tech gadgetry, like The Italian Job was. This is about some low-tech petty criminals who rob a bank the old fashioned way and get caught up in some high level shenanigans while they're at it. It's got a sound plot, decent acting, good suspense, and lots a nudity.

A must see.

Now I like zombie movies and I really like Romero's ability to blend in a tale of the human condition in his zombie movies. This one was a movie about the human condition with zombies in it. I liked it even though I didn't particularly like the first person POV but I understand how it was part or the feel. Not the greatest zombie movie he's made but still good.

I'd have to say this a good movie more then its a good zombie movie.

I'm watching Alien vs Predator Requiem (2) right now.

You might ask what I'm doing here, if I'm watching a movie at the same time.
Well right there, you have a clue to how sucky this movie is. I dunno if I'll watch the rest of it.

The deal with the first movie was, everyone knows what the monsters look like, so all people were hoping for was some cool monster on monster action.

This movie, is all about dark places and just letting the viewer see a glimpse of the monsters, a lot of moving shadows and something glistening in the dark and scary crawling and hissing sounds and the like.

Which would have been a good idea if no one knew what the monsters look like (to a certain limit, maybe in the beginning parts of the film).

Now I think theyre doing it just to save money on the CGI.
The result is, I can't see . .. .. .. ..

Don't see this movie, it's a monster movie with no monsters, well visible ones. 1/5

I saw the movie this weekend as well and I thought the exact same thing. I would hope the smartest kid at MIT would have a solid understanding of basic probability.

It's a shame, too, because the book that movie was based on (Bringing Down the House) was pretty solid. But the movie was a bad combination of Hollywood cliches and poor writing.

In other news, I saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford yesterday. Boring, boring, boring.

Terminal: Not bad. At first I thought it was going to be very boring if it's all about waiting in terminal, but luckily there was something else too. Though some sentimental and romantic parts were extremly stupid.
Woman marrries a man that she has never even spoken to...

Babel: When this was in cinemas I almost went to see it, but didn't because the review in Helsingin Sanomat gave impression that this is one of those movies where everything goes wrong and bad, and people have troubles and everything is sooooo hard (and that's why it's artistic and touching). I wouldn't have seen it even now if my girl didn't accuse me of being a snob when it comes to movies. Needless to say that my original instinct was perfectly correct. Characters were just marionettes trying to get deeper in misery, and their logic had some serious holes (which is understandable, because otherwise their lives wouldn't have been so miserable, and the film wouldn't have been as artistic it was).

Das Leben der Anderen (aka The Lives of Others): The film is about Stasi spying on writer in 80s. Sometimes this seemed to contain too much of drama too, but it wasn't that bad (maybe the overdramatic music that bothered more). What makes a difference between this and films that exploit sad events is that this film also gives hope. I recommend to everybody. It could have been half an hour shorter though (as most of the films). I'm also curious about how truthful the film was about Stasi.

The Indiana Jones-films, all of them: I had seen them already as a kid, and this new spectation was partly for nostalgic reason. I'm surprised how much they consentrated on violence, especially the Temple of Doom, which had almost no other content. Also I was surprised how boring the action scenes are, usually I kind of "woke up" when the action was over, and realized that I had no clue about what had happnened. Other strange thing that I didn't notice when younger was how demonic Germans were portrayed: They were called nazies all the time, and they couldn't even ask for water without sounding like they would be ordering someone's death. Of course it's part of this kind of movies, where there has to be something purely evil, but it was surprising though.

Best in these films was of course escapistic archeology/adventure-thing, and if you can tune in to that mental state, parts 1&3 are recommendable.

Wonderland: A movie about murders John Holmes was involved with. I hoped this would have been more documentary type film, but it felt like dramatisation of the murders with no deeper knowledge about them. The film's main thing seems to be the character of John Holmes, but unfortunately it doesn't go to deep into it, and suddenly when interrogated he turns from a sad little man into a cool guy.

Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima: These were both very good. I won't say anything about the message of the films, if they had any, because it's better for everyone to see for themselves.

Edit: Boy, do I suck at writing English....

The Golden Compass: I finally ended up watching this and it was exactly as bad as I feared or even more so. I felt awkward shame on behalf of the film makers and I absolutely had to fast forward the latter half.

Casting was off and at times the dialogue was plain stupid. Sets looked completely lifeless - indoor locations looked like everything was new and no one had ever lived in them, and outdoor locations just looked small and if within cities too polished. CGI was only mediocre. Most importantly the script had managed to ruin the only good book in the series and the director was at loss in the genre.

Persepolis: based on the autobiographical comics of the same name by Marjane Satrapi. This tells about Islamic revolution in Iran, life after it, Irak vs Iran war and Satrapi's life in Europe. Despite not so funny things this film is telling about, it succeeds in being funny sometimes, not at all so gloomy as you'd think. Usually movies made out of comics aren't worth of watching, but this is an excepiton. Story works well in this format too, and the style is just like in comics but looks natural also (that is: it could very well be an animation without any model they were trying to imitate). If you're going to see this in movies and don't understand French well, sit in the first row, because subtitles are sometimes hard to read against white background. I also recommend reading the comics first, because at least the movie works after them, I don't know how it is the other way round.

Enchanted April: British movie from 1992. This tells about four women in London of 20s', who are going for a vacation in Italy. It has no special plot or drama, but is very sympathetic. As someone in imdb said: this makes you feel very benevolent. Even if all the characters aren't good or admirable, I saw them as humans, and maybe felt sorry for them rather than judging. This is more of athmosphere-movie than plot one, so if you don't like that kind of films, don't watch. Otherwise it's a good choice.
