View Full Version : Best modpacks?
Zuul Jan 04, 2008, 12:52 AM Please vote on the latest modpacks you like the most.
Preferably choose 1-5 but you can choose more.
Max 25 poll options so I hade to choose myself the newest/biggest/most original/most posts mods.
Wolfshanze Jan 04, 2008, 09:34 AM Rigged! (hehe... just kidding)
NikNaks Jan 04, 2008, 12:54 PM There seems to be a definite trend here...
ohcrapitsnico Jan 04, 2008, 02:53 PM EDU because you can't play any game without it, and RFC because thats just about all I play on civ iv.
Ball Lightning Jan 04, 2008, 05:41 PM FoHII And RFC.
Seven05 Jan 04, 2008, 09:46 PM <- Shamelessly voted for his own mod :D
Another good one that didn't make the list is Dale's Combat Mod.
Dale Jan 04, 2008, 11:17 PM Another good one that didn't make the list is Dale's Combat Mod.
DCM isn't finished. It doesn't have Ranged Bombard, Civ Changer, Opportunity Fire, Combined Arms Stack Attack, non-lethal combat, or a number of other items I have in progress.
Maybe in a few months. ;)
Zuul Jan 05, 2008, 04:35 AM Maybe next time I should create 3 threads with polls, or ask Thunderfall to raise max to 75 :p.
NikNaks Jan 05, 2008, 04:37 AM Interesting to see VD coming in 3rd behind RFC and FFH IMO.
Waay too many acronyms...
Dafy Jan 05, 2008, 08:57 AM HephMod
New Balance Mod
Nyomod
Zuul Jan 06, 2008, 06:32 AM Myself have not tried most new mods because my computer broke, and just now I have a new one.
Grave Jan 06, 2008, 02:04 PM First off, I appreciate the two fellas who voted History in the Making as the "Best". :)
I had to vote for Fall from Heaven II... simply because it's the most unique and original, IMHO.
My runner up has to be Planetfall... having a spiritual sucessor for SMAC, running on the modern Civ4 engine is going to be loads of fun! Planetfall is the one mod I'm looking forward to playing the most.
Wyz_sub10 Jan 06, 2008, 02:06 PM FFH II is really just an amazing modpack.
There are two missing from the list that deserve some love - Amra's Modpack and The Second Revolution. I know how much work went into - and continues to go into making those for the community.
Zuul Jan 06, 2008, 02:19 PM Yes well I had max 25 options, so I had to remove alot. I choose to only include newer bts mods :). I will make another poll in a few months, maybe with more poll threads or something.
Seven05 Jan 06, 2008, 04:07 PM How about a 'which mod havn't you tried yet?' poll so I have a chance of winning :)
Strider Jan 06, 2008, 05:40 PM I spent many long hours curled up with Rhye's.
Zuul Jan 08, 2008, 12:55 PM Bump :). Tried star trek mod but it was very incompleate.
mice Jan 08, 2008, 01:29 PM Marnz.
Wolfshanze.
New Destiny.
psob2 Jan 08, 2008, 03:33 PM MarnzMod
Beginning without Rev
BUG and Blue Marble
Ball Lightning Jan 08, 2008, 04:58 PM Maybe next time you make the poll World of Legends will be on there (theres still a lonnnngggg way to go until the Beta is done, Alpha should be done in the coming weeks and months).
mice Jan 09, 2008, 12:46 AM BUG and Blue Marble
Yes, definitley BUG if you can count that.
OzzyKP Jan 09, 2008, 08:25 AM FfH2 and Rhye's shouldn't even be included on a poll like this. It is obvious they are head & shoulders above everything else.

Yes, but it gives us something to strive for in competing with these giants for popularity. ;)

Actually to be honest, I found both mods not that good.
FFH2 has some pretty unrealistic concepts for Civ (such as archery barrage), and honestly, I found it pretty *yawn* when compared to some of the great historical based mods.
Rhye's, I'm not keen on mods the full scope of history. If I wanted to waste 20 hours on one game, I'd play BtS straight up. I'm more an era player (like Age of Discovery, or World Wars). I found it just tried to do too much.
OzzyKP Jan 09, 2008, 08:20 PM Have you played the full FFH2? Or just the Age of Ice thing in BTS? I didn't much care for the Age of Ice mod either. Archery barrage isn't in the real mod. Check out version .31, still a work in progress but it is rather engrossing imho.
As for Rhye's. Civ straight up is an attempt to capture the entire scope of human history in one game. Rhye's mod takes that game and puts it in its proper historical and geographic context. I see the appeal of era scenarios, but if you have any love at all for the full epic game it seems that Rhye's is the logical extension of such a game. It is like the difference between playing a WW2 mod (with all the units, buildings, leaders etc) on a random map or playing it in a real world map with real events and other realism elements.
But to each their own.
Dale Jan 09, 2008, 08:24 PM It's more the scripted feel. You KNOW certain civs will appear on certain dates, and certain other civs will drive for certain areas.
I prefer the full randomness of BtS straight up. If I wanted scripts I'd play Europa Universalis 2. :)
OzzyKP Jan 09, 2008, 08:31 PM True.
But all historical scenarios have a lot of scriptedness. You know the map and you know where your enemies are and what units/cities/techs/etc everyone has.

You may not care for the mods from a perspective of personal preference, but you probably recognize the scope of work that went into creating these.
The gameplay in Rhys' doesn't suit my style, necessarily, but I'm very impressed at what he's been able to do with the mechanics. It's quite incredible, actually.
FFH *does* suit my interests, but believe it or not, I've yet to play it. (Too much damn modding of my own)
Dale Jan 10, 2008, 12:20 AM I do recognise a lot of work into those mods. But the question is directed at personal preference, "Best Modpacks?". To me they ain't. :)
But I fully respect the work that's gone into these two mods, and how both teams have helped to move Civ4 modding. But these two teams aren't the only two. There's lots of folks who deserve kudos for bringing great ideas to Civ4 and modding techniques. :)
OzzyKP Jan 10, 2008, 09:00 AM Which is why I suggested a poll without these two since the incredibly unbalanced poll results make it harder to assess the other mods.
Btw, as for historic era mods, have you checked out the Fractured States mod I'm working on (slowly)? Link in my sig. I don't know if you have any interest in late 19th century American history or alternate history, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Zuul Jan 14, 2008, 03:32 AM Closing in 4 days!
asioasioasio Jan 14, 2008, 07:28 AM You forgot about 1939 :( (number 18 in top 20 download list)

I have to agree with you there Dale. I have played both of these mods and couldn't get into them not matter how hard I tried. I can see as you have said where the work has gone into these mods, and the community as a whole owes these teams a great deal.
Personally I prefer to play the original BtS with custom civs and EDU. I either play CivGOld or my own mod Ionut's civs (shameless plug:lol: )

Didn't forget :). Could only choose some modpacks and these modpacks has not been updated in a long time.
avain Jan 16, 2008, 07:37 AM Just dropped by to say thanks to everyone who voted for VD, I really hope you like it - even though I don't consider it a modpack as such - more like a graphical mod, but anyway ;)
Zuul Jan 17, 2008, 08:23 PM Last day for voting!
Ace of Gold Jan 17, 2008, 09:29 PM the road to war is the best
