This mod, in the styles and tradition of Phillip Jose Farmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wold_Newton_family), Alan Moore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_League_of_Extraordinary_Gentlemen), Robert Heinlein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_as_myth) and many others, is based on the world of fiction. Drawing on mythology, folklore, literature and pop culture, Fictionalization IV takes human imagination’s fragments of stories and makes them into a single universe. Some of the characters in this mod, like Firefly and Hynkell, come from film, others like Charmant and Froshkonig, come from fairytale. Still others, like El Cid and Ivan are real, but still hold strong places in national legend. And if you have a favorite film, novel, comic, play, TV show or anything else you can think of that I haven’t represented in the list below, I’ll try my best to work it into the mod somehow.

Features:

All Civilization have new leaders, as well as special hero units. Each has three Heroes which operate like Wonders: special units with battlefield prowess and/or special bonuses. Civs also have special Legendary Units: special National units that are weaker than Heroes, but still give their own bonuses etc.

The mod will also have new great people names, wonders, projects, corporations, three new religions, and new events.

So Far:

New religions, corporations, civs, and leaders are all in place. A handful of the heroes and wonders are completed, and those that aren't finished are because the effects that I want aren't doable given my limited ability with SDK and python. If you're a decent programmer, I'd love the help.

I think it's a fantastic idea. :D Adding an element of fiction into Civ would be a nice break from more "serious" mods out there, creating opportunities for innovation and humor.

One question: would you take the existing civs in the game (like England) or make new ones entirely? It might be funnier to have Moe Hailstone as dictator of Moronika instead of Germany (similarly with Adenoid Hynkel). Either way it looks to be a great mod.

cfkane
Jan 04, 2008, 11:17 AM
Thanks!

I think it would work better if most of the civilizations were kept, with different leaders representing different governments throughout its history - which is why I listed Big Brother as an English leader instead of the leader of Oceania as a separate civilization. It might be a bit too complicated to write up about five dozen minor countries with their own leader, UU, UB, etc.

Although they could be represented by Barbarian states or minor nations; something like that. That way you could work in interesting but poorly documented fictional countries like Freedonia (from Duck Soup) or Q'umar (from The West Wing), or even the various islands from Gulliver's Travels.

You could easily keep civilizations that already exist in-game that have rich cultural history, like America, England, China, India, Egypt, Greece, and so on (Carthage, Portugal and Mongolia might miss out). And at the same time you could replace some civs with fictional ones that have rich background info. Moronika might be tough to flesh out, but Cimmeria under Conan the Barbarian might be interesting to do, or even Atlantis, which could be a combination of various depictions of the continent in the media.

But there are really few limits with what you can do. You could add fictional religions (the cult of Ayesha, Cthulhu worship, The Church of All Worlds) fictional corporations (Acme, Rearden Steel), wonders (The Diogenes Club, Camelot, the Tower of Babel) or projects (The Voyage to the Moon, The Torchwood Institute).

I've been thinking about this way too much, haven't I?

You have to think to much, otherwise its going to be like normal civ, this isn't! Its better.

Well if I do start it, I'd need all the feedback and additional ideas I can get. So, if you have anything you'd like to see, by all means tell me. I'm a big fan of groupthink.

These are my main inspirations.

Interesting idea about the hero units. You might want to talk to cybrxkhan, who is doing something very similar for the World of Legends mod.

Also, I'd like to request Moe Hailstone as a leader of Germany (or Moronika, if you want to make a new civ). :D

I think I've figured out how to do Moronika and all the other tiny, silly nations of central and eastern Europe.

I initially didn't think it would work because a fictional state like Moronika is usually only meant to be a one-shot gag; a stand-in for the general political situation of the times. Sure, there's the name, but there's very little behind it.

So, I've added a new Civ: The Freedo-Moronikan Empire. Like the historical Austro-Hungarian Empire, it's made up of many different nations with very different backgrounds and ruled by a joint dictatorship run by the Moronikans (from The Stooges) and the Freedonians (from the Marx Brother's movie Duck Soup). This way I can cram in all those other tiny city-states and one-shots just by the city names: Vulgaria, Latveria, and so on.

Gaius Octavius
Jan 06, 2008, 05:55 PM
Positively brilliant. :D

"And for taking pictures in Vulgaria, you are sentenced to be shot!"

I suppose you'll have to use static leaderheads for the mod, since that's really the only way to remain true to the inspirations without having to do a lot of extra (in fact, virtually impossible) work animating them. I don't think that'll matter, though.

cfkane
Jan 06, 2008, 06:29 PM
Thanks

I was actually thinking of the Vulgaria from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but whatever. It still works.

Hey, could you get the word out on this project? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by it right now.

Wow, this really is a great idea. Here's a few suggestions of the top of my head (I'll probably think some more up soon):
Blackadder as a possible leader or hero for England and Apocalypse (Marvel Comics) as a leader for Egypt.

Also, wasn't Harun al-Rashid a real person? I understand Gilgamesh is semi-legendary, but...

Gaius Octavius
Jan 06, 2008, 06:59 PM
You could always use Enkidu instead of Gilgamesh if that became a problem. Surely there was not really a wild man made by the gods like that... :)

yenemus
Jan 06, 2008, 07:41 PM
Okey, here's some suggestions for Great People, some of them may be over-the-top or somewhat ridiculous but you may find some useful.

Artists: Isaac Mendez, Chris Griffin, Peter Parker (well... he's a photographer)

Engineers: Reginald Barclay, Willy Wonka, Wallace (Wallace & Gromit), Q, Brainiac, Donatello (TMNT), Ratchet, Dexter (Dexter's Lab), Robotnik/Eggman

Generals: Mace Windu, Darth Vader, Witch-King, Sauron, Fa Mulan, Buffy Summers, Bill Adama, Xena, Optimus Prime?

Merchants: Santa Claus, Han Solo, Jabba the Hutt, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Emma Frost,

Prophets: Gandalf, Saruman, Albus Dumbledore, Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Darth Sidious, Ned Flanders, Timothy Lovejoy, Silas, Kurt Wagner, Magneto (he sees himself as a Messiah), Zelda, Jafar

Scientists: Victor Frankenstein, Bruce Banner, Hank McCoy, Emmett Brown ("Doc" from Back to the Future), Susan Calvin, Gaius Baltar, Doctor Who, Bulma Briefs, Zoidberg, Ross Gellar

Spies: Austin Powers, Bobba Fett, Naruto Uzumaki, Sam Fisher, Solid Snake, Sydney Bristow (Alias), Severus Snape, Johnny English (perhaps an English hero unit), Mystique, Alex Rider

Well, you're right. Haroun al-Raschid was a real Caliph, but I thought I could use him as Arabia's leader because I think Arabia in this mod will be heavily based on the 1001 Arabian Nights, which in turn was inspired by Raschid's Bagdad. Fiction is always based on fact, which is inspired by fiction.

And I like some of your suggestions on Great People, but I think some of them wouldn't work, and here's why.

This mod is basically taking our own world and looking at it through the prism of fiction. So if fiction says that Apu Nahasapeemapetilon runs a one-stop-shop in a backwater town, he does in this mod. So, you can't really call him a "great" merchant (although come to think of it, Mr. Burns might make a good addition). I also couldn't use anything from Star Wars, Star Trek or Lord of the Rings either; the Star Wars characters live in another galaxy, the LOTR characters live in another dimension, and the Trek guys haven't been born yet - since the game always ends in 2050.

But still, those are some good ideas.

I know Cimmeria has already been represented in other mods, but it seemed like such a great idea that I didn't want to leave it out of this mod.

Actually, I could use all the help I could get on this mod. Lend a hand? Or at least ideas?

Well, yeah

I know Cimmeria has already been represented in other mods, but it seemed like such a great idea that I didn't want to leave it out of this mod.

Actually, I could use all the help I could get on this mod. Lend a hand? Or at least ideas?Unfortunately, I am spending all my free time working on converting my modpack to BtS so I don't think I would be able to help adequately other than to throw out some ideas. Sorry. :(

If you want to include Conan & Kull, you can look thru the civ that I posted for Vanilla Civ4 (see the link in my other post) to get some city lists for both. I actually had Conan as king of the Hyborians which is a more general term for the Fictional era he inhabited.

I have Conan in my modpack (I hope to post a basic version in the next 3 or so weeks, just gotta finish some new LH's) and you are more than welcome to use anything from it for your mod.

As far as heroes for Conan/Hyborians you could use: Belit, Pallantides, Pelias, Red Sonja, Taramis, or Valeria. That's just a few, obviously the books were filled with many characters that I have long since forgotten. :old:

About the only hero (not counting the villains/evil sorcerers) I remember from the Kull stories was Brule.

One other civ you may want to consider (and it's in my modpack, so it's already done) is the Aesir ruled by Odin (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=4469). That is if you are doing anything involving mythological characters. I can't recall if you said that you were.

Hope that helps a little.

cfkane
Jan 09, 2008, 04:35 PM
Thanks.

I don't think I'll use the Aesir though. I once thought about using non-human empires in the game like the Faeries and the Martians, but I ditched the idea in favor of just using civilizations that were set on earth only. Maybe some other time though.

And about Kull, I know he was Atlantean by birth, but didn't he grow up to rule some other Hyborian country? If so I may just have to use him as an Atlantean hero instead of a leader. Problem is I can't think of an appropriate Atlantean king to replace him with - preferably someone from myth or folklore (I want to keep Aquaman as a hero).

Fiction is always based on fact, which is inspired by fiction.

Okey, I see the kind of Arabia you're going for. I still think you should think twice about using real historical (not even mythological/legendary) leaders in place of completely fictional ones. But then again, I can't really think of a better one. But, seeing as you're basing it on 1001 Arabian Nights, wouldn't Aladdin be a good option as a hero?

Sorry about some of the GPs, I wasn't sure where you were drawing the line. So, are you only having characters that exist in the real world (well, a fictional variation of the real word atleast, as opposed to a parallel universe). I could brainstorm for some more suggestions but maybe you're more interested in finding Leaders/Heroes for the civs first.

EDIT: How could I forget Ali Baba (another character who should definitely be a hero for Arabia).

I once thought about using non-human empires in the game like the Faeries and the Martians, but I ditched the idea in favor of just using civilizations that were set on earth only. Maybe some other time though.

You could, however, use Martians for a mass invasion in a special event that occurred in maybe 1 out of every 20 games, just like in War of the Worlds. :groucho:

Feb 19, 2008, 03:29 PM
Well, I'm doing something like that. I'm not making any scenarios for this mod (yet) but as far as fictional locations...

There's the Wonder list that I've already posted, as well as the five new civs. And on top of that, I'm was going to change add a few new city names as well. So if you play as America as the mod you can build the regular cities like Washington and New York, as well as cities from other fiction like Gotham, Arkham, Mayberry, Vice City and so on.

Gaius Octavius

You could use the alternate Earth map script (or whatever it is called) to generate landmasses similar to the real Earth in size, location and shape, but not quite the same.

I wasn't going to write up any of the heroes until I had finished with the leaders, great people, etc. Mainly because that's the easy stuff :mischief:

Right now I'm going to focus on writing the XML for everything. Once that's done I'll write up a complete list of artwork that I need: leader portraits, units, buildings, icons and so on.

cfkane
Feb 28, 2008, 12:43 AM
Scratch that. Here's a list of all the units I think I'll need for the mod. Units in bold are heroes, or at least world units.

EDIT: units now have my annotations. Hopefully unit designers will find this helpful.

Achilles - from Greek Myth; can probably use the phalanx model
Ahuizotl - an Aztec water monster; half dog, half monkey, and with a hand protruding from its tail.
Airavata - in Hinduism, the sacred white elephant that carried Lord Indra
Aladdin - from 1001 Nights; a peasant's look, and carrying his signature lamp. In the mod he'll be used alongside the djinn (see below)
Aloja - Catalan "water-women", not unlike Greek nymphs
Amazon - can be built with the Alliance with Themyscira wonder. Based on the Amazons from DC Comics, which include Wonder Woman
Anansi - a trickster god. Sometimes a spider, sometimes a man, sometimes both
Andalite - from the Animorphs books. Blue centaurs that can shapeshift into other animals.
Angelus - AKA Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Apache Chief - the token Native American from Super Friends
Arsene Lupin - a French gentleman thief; The Penguin stole his look from this guy
Asterix - The Gaul, from French comics. Cute and goofy.
Baron Munchhausen - a real German baron. His look is fairly distinctive; there are many famous caricatures of him.
Barsoomian - a four-armed green Martian from the John Carter series
Benkei - a real Sohei who became legendary in Kabuki drama, most notably the play Kanjincho
Beowulf - I'm thinking of the Zemeckis rendering of Beowulf in his 2007 movie of him
The Black Dragons - these have already been done I believe; Amra's Hyboria custom civ has them as UUs.
Bodhisatva - in Buddhism, humans on their way to reaching enlightenment. Can probably use the Buddhist missionary model, but should have more presence
Bran Mak Morn - made by the same guy who made Conan. Imagine Conan, only Celtic
Brobingnagian - giants from Gulliver's travels. Should probably wear 17th century clothing
Captain America - can be built with the Super Soldier wonder. In game, he'll actually be called Captain France, or Captain Japan, depending on who built him. Should have a color-shifting costume for this purpose.
Centaur - I think centaur models were made for FFH, but these centaurs should look more Hellenic
Centurion - historical unit; commander in the ancient Roman army
Chingachgook - he is The Last of the Mohicans
Cimmerian Warrior - Hyboria's UU. look to either the comics or the movie for appearance ideas.
Conqueror of the Clouds - a steampunk airship. There were lots of these in turn of the 20th century literature, but I'm thinking of the ones from Robur the Conqueror
Count Orlok - the vampire from the film Nosferatu
Coyote - from Native American myth, often shown as an anthropomorphic male coyote
Cuchullainn - from Irish myth; traditionally he fought from a chariot driven by his friend Laeg and his two horses.
D’Artagnan - the Fourth Musketeer
Djinn - known in the west as a genie.
Dob Dob - this unit was already made for someone's custom Tibet civ, I can't remember whose
Don Quixote - skinny guy in a goatee with a lance and bowler hat. The look is famous. Sancho could even ride alongside him.
Donald Blake - Thor, from Marvel Comics
Dragon - from European myth. FFH2 could be raided for this
Durandarte - a legendary Spanish Knight Errant
The Ebony Horse - from 1001 Nights. A mechanical horse that could fly its rider from one place to another
El Mariachi - from the Robert Rodriguez movie and its sequels. A lone gunman in black carrying a guitar
Elric of Melibone - The Eternal Champion. An albino king who wields a great black sword: Stormbringer.
Enkidu - a wildman from the Epic of Gilgamesh. Should probably look like the Enkidu warrior from Civ 3
Faerie - Notice I didn't type "fairy". Should be more like Oberon than Tinkerbell, but still spritely.
Fianna - warriors who followed Fionn mac Cumhaill in Irish myth
Gamera - a giant radioactive turtle, and friend to children.
Glinda, the Good Witch - a pink and bubble-travelling gay icon
Godzilla - run! it is Gojira!
Gunslinger - a generic wild west hero
Hanuman - a monkey king and key player in the Ramayana
Harimtu - a devotee of the goddess Ishtar; a sexualized priestess. Shamhat, who tamed Enkidu, was a harimtu.
Heracles - traditionally depicted wearing a lionskin and carrying a club
Homa - a Persian mythological bird. Iran Air uses it as its logo.
Horatio Hornblower - a naval unit. Should probably be based on Nelson's HMS Victory
Houyhnhm - strongly civilized horses from Gulliver's Travels
Hua Mulan - called Fa Mulan in the Disney film.
Ilya Muromets - a bogatyr (Russian knight)
Imhotep - Boris Karloff's character in the 1932 The Mummy
Impundulu - South African lightning bird; black and white, human sized, lightning charged and often a witch's familiar
Inigo Montoya - "You killed my father. Prepare to die." Master swordsman
Ivan Tsarevich - from many, many tales in Russian folklore. Maybe he could ride a grey wolf?
James Bond - Could easily just reskin the Great Spy for this one.
John Henry - a strong black man with a hammer in his hand; the classic image of the steel drivin' man
Kent Allard- AKA The Shadow
Kit Walker - AKA The Phantom
Knight of the Round Table - from Grail Lore
Kobold - house sprites; similar to dwarves or gnomes
Koschei the Deathless - old, ugly, and immortal. May have had a skeletal appearance
Krishna - prince from Hindu myth. Often depicted with bluish skin
Kull - like Conan, only Atlantean
Kurgan - the bad guy from Highlander
Lee - Bruce Lee. In Enter the Dragon, his character was simply called Lee.
Lestat du Lioncourt - from Anne Rice's novels. played by Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire
Lilliputian - tiny people in Gulliver's travels
Loa - spirits in Vodoun myth
Maciste - a muscled and tanned stock character from Italian movies
Manjushrikirti - the eigth king of Shambhala and an incarnation of Tibet's Panchen lamas.
Marxist - of the Groucho variety. I was thinking that this infantry unit could look a bit like Harpo. I believe Harpo was the only one who actually got into battle in Duck Soup.
Mathayus - The Scorpion King. So basically, The Rock.
Maximus Decimus Meridius - Russell Crowe in Gladiator
Mersoldier - naval unit, half man, half fish, fights with a trident
Miles Gloriosus - stock character from Roman plays. More boast than bite, so he should look incredibly impressive.
Moroi - unlike the one in FFH2, should look a bit more ragged and undead
Mufasa - from The Lion King
Namor - The Sub-Mariner from Marvel comics.
Natty Bumppo - from Last of the Mohicans, played by Daniel Day Lewis in the movie.
The Nautilus - I'm rather partial to Kevin O'Neill's design for the Nautilus in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Nosferatu - a typical vampire; sleek, pale and seductive
Odysseus - I was thinking that our version could use a bow, since Odysseus proves himself with his archery skills in The Odyssey
Ogoun - a loa of smithing in Voodoun. Carries a machete and rum.
Omega Red - from Marvel comics; fights with tentacles
Phoenix - the firebird from Middle Eastern myth
Polyreme - since it's Atlantis' UU, should probably be of Minoan design
Popocatepetl - Aztec warrior who later became a volcano
The Prince of Persia - from the Ubisoft games
Pundarika - the Dalai Lamas are supposedly reincarnations of him
Ra’s Al Ghul - from DC comics
Red Skull - from Marvel comics
Red Sonja - from the Conan stories; fleshed out (ha!) in Marvel comics
Robin Hood - perhaps some of the Merry Men could appear with Robin as soldiers in the unit?
Roland - one of Charlemagne's finest knights; carried the unbreakable sword Durandal.
Ronin - lordless samurai; the basis for a lot of Japanese legends
Rostam - from Iranian myth. He shows up in a lot of Persian art if you need a visual reference
Shaolin Monk - Chinese martial artists
Shi’ar - from Marvel comics. There are plenty of prominent individual Shiar, but just a generic warrior unit will do.
Siegfried - also Sigurd. Appears in Nordic myth and Wagnerian opera
Simurgh - a mythical bird-like creature that purifies the land. Appears in a lot of Persian art
Sindbad - I don't know whether to make him a naval unit or a land unit. Any thoughts?
SMERSH Agent - a generic Bond villain's henchman
Smurf - small, blue, put the word "smurf" into EVERYTHING
The Snow Queen - from Hans Christian Anderson's story. White, icy and fearsome
Son Goku - from Dragon Ball Z; preferably in non-Super Saiyan mode
Son Wukong - The Monkey King from Journey to the West. Along with Superman, he was the inspiration for Goku

Tannhauser - from German legend; more of a balladeer than a warrior

Yeah, I posted a bit in the request thread. No such luck so far.

Would it be out of line just to make a new thread in the unit graphics forum? It's certainly a big enough list...

Okay, just an update.

I've been toiling away on getting a first draft in. I've created all the leaders, I just need to find/make appropriate artwork for them. The three new religions are in place and they all have their buildings and missionaries, but they are still lacking building and unit artwork. The corporations are almost done as well.

Hopefully I'll be able to release an alpha version with new leaders, religions, civs, and corporations. Heroes, wonders, projects and events will have to come later (i.e. once I get artwork)

I think I've been planning this mod all wrong, especially with regards to the heroes.

It would probably make more sense to give each civ only one unique hero (not counting the special legend units) and leave the rest to be built by anyone, just like regular wonders. It would make it a lot easier to program as well as open up the field to other characters to be included.

I think I'm just about ready to throw out an alpha version of the mod, with leaders, civs, corporations and religions, but still without the heroes, wonders, and events.

I've already tried to upload the file to the database, but it doesn't show up. Whose approval do I need before I post an alpha?

This sounds like a really fun mod to play :) . There's a Civ 2 or Civ 3 mod, (I forget which), called "The World of Jules Verne" that you might want to look at for ideas. It came with one of the expasnion packs and had things like the time machine, capt nemo's sub, the country of Mongo, etc.

That was actually one of my inspirations. I was planning on making The Time Machine a world project and The Nautilus one of the heroes that will be included in the mod.

What's the country of Mongo? The only fictional place called Mongo I know of is the planet ruled by Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon.

The very same Mongo ruled by Ming is what they used. It was a mainly non player civ that was located in the north Pacific islands with a few scattered outposts in other places. It took the place of barbarian civs.

Oh, WOW! Downloading now, this looks like the best mod I have ever seen. I am a huge myth and folklore buff, and all the Wold Newton stuff, various mentions to famous and not so famous books and movies... You had me at 'Rearden Steele', I just hope I can make the legendary anti-hero 'Toohey', bwahaha. Is there anything I can do? I've got a load of suggestions, but I imagine you're probably pretty busy with this and life already... Either way, if it's all right, I'll comment when it's done downloading.

Seems an interesting idea!

I notice you have "Zuul - the "prehistoric b****" from Ghostbusters" as a unit...does that mean there is room for the Stay Puft Marshmallow man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stay_Puft#The_Stay-Puft_Marshmallow_Man)?!

Also, if you have room for Brigadier-General Sir Harry Paget Flashman VC KCB KCIE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Flashman)
- I'd personally beeline for whatever tech was required for him!

"Harry Paget Flashman describes himself as a large man, six feet and two inches (1.88 metres) tall and close to 13 stone (about 180 pounds or 82 kg). In Flashman and the Tiger, he mentions that one of his grandchildren has black hair and eyes, resembling him in his younger years; his dark colouring frequently enables him to pass (in disguise) for a Pathan. He describes his only two talents as a gift for horsemanship and languages (but sometimes makes it up to four by adding fornication and cricket). He also had the means to impress important people he met, usually with excessive toadying. His other gift was his success with women. The list of his sexual conquests (see below) is long (apparently up to 478 at about halfway through his life (whilst languishing in a Gwalior dungeon during Flashman and the Great Game he counts them) and includes several famous women. Despite his natural abilities and imposing figure, Flashman was a coward, running from the danger he constantly found himself in. He was also a bully to his (supposed) inferiors and found joy in creating trouble for people he did not like."

I actually had him listed as one of the great spies!

And I'd love to have Stay Puft in the game, though I don't think Zuul herself would work as a buildable "hero" character (truth be told I was looking for a third Sumerian character when I was still on the old "three heroes per civ" plan). Though either her or Stay Puft could show up because of an event.

I'm planning on making several events where notorious monsters and such show up. This would include the appearance of mythological monsters (dragons, etc.), alien invasions (I'm working on a unit model for a Tripod from War of the Worlds), and zombie outbreaks. The events of Ghostbusters could easily fit in this way.

but even if that doesn't come to fruition, I've listed Egon Spengler as a Great Engineer :)

Haha, don't worry... I'm still new to the whole modding scene, so I wouldn't burden you by yakking at you to do this and that. :p But! I do have loads of ideas, and if one of them strikes your fancy, or inspires you on a new idea, go for it! There's way too much fun stuff to play around with, here... For one thing, is it possible to make leader-specific UU? Big Brother could have 'educators' for example... Secondly, as a 'great scientist', perhaps we could add Mycroft Holmes? Also, since so many cultures have tombs for unknown soldier, maybe the Unknown Soldier should be a 'hero' unit.

cfkane
Jun 18, 2008, 11:33 PM
I don't know about leader-specific UUs, but I have toyed around with having religious UUs based on fiction; the Jewish Golem, the the Islamic Djinn, and so on. Plus, that way civs that practice the Cthulhu's Call can summon Shoggoths.

But the thing that I'm definitely going to include are civ-specific Legendary units, which I've talked about earlier in the thread. These would be a specific kind of character that features prominently in a civilizations folklore. For example, the Greek legend unit would be a centaur. The American one would be a wild west gunslinger. And so on like that. But for now, I'm saving that for a future version.

My biggest concerns right now are

1) Artwork. I have little to no experience with 3d modeling so I really need help with it.

2) Coding. Most of the wonders I've planned need new XML tags, which requires an SDK coder, which I am not.

3) Help with the hero units. I've made a long list of characters that I want to include as hero units, but I haven't figured out how to make them all work. Some are easy; units like Heracles and Superman would simply be powerful fighters. But the non-combat units would need more nuance to them. I've already figured out how to do some - Sherlock Holmes would automatically create a Baker St. building that gives special bonuses when he's stationed in a city - but others I'm drawing a bit of a blank on.

Oh, and I've already included Mycroft Holmes in the game, but as a Great Spy, not a scientist (Mycroft, as I remember, was heavily integrated into MI5 in the Holmes stories). If you've downloaded the mod, you can open up the units XML file and see which characters I've put on the Great People list.

The unknown soldier idea sounds interesting, but I don't know how to reconcile it with the theme of the mod. I'd need to see if there was a specific piece of fiction that I could draw from before I include it in the game.

Hey folks!

This mod looks fantastic... And I have a few minor requests :]

1.) Could you PLEASE include some of the Next War stuff, like the Mech warriors and the Cyborg infantry? I can't play Big Brother without hoping for my own distopyian future robot army...
2.) I think Umbrella Inc. could be a feasible corporation. I'd like Umbrella to be more of a research (with biological resources such as cows, horses, etc.) and Cyberdyne to be simply production... Or something like that.

...That's really about it. This has huge potential. Thanks!

cfkane
Jun 21, 2008, 02:37 AM
Sure. Some of the more basic facets of Next War would work well in this.

I like the Umbrella suggestion, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in with the other corps. I chose the fictional corporations in this mod because they're more or less direct counterparts to the corporations in the game. Cereal Mills and Wonka both handle food, Dinoco and Std. Ethanol handle fuel, etc. And as of right now my main research corporation is Black Mesa. I'd love to include Umbrella, but I'm worried that having two big research corporations might end up being redundant.

I played a couple games of your mod, and I think it's fantastic. One problem though is that adding a ton of stuff means that a lot of stuff never gets built. In particular, the heroes are way overpriced. They should be no more than 50% more expensive than a regular unit of the same power level. Otherwise they don't get built until they're obsolete anyway.

As for things I'd like to see, how about monster barbarian units like dragons, and giant squids?

I explained this in an earlier post I think.

I can't use anything from Star Wars because it wouldn't fit with the theme of the mod. I got the idea from things like the Wold Newton universe and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, where fiction is fact. So I can use things like Arthurian legend or H.G. Wells novels, because they are set on Earth in history, well within the time frame and location that most Civ games use. Star Wars takes place in an entirely different galaxy with no interaction with our earth whatsoever.

You could look up "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" or "Wold Newton" on wikipedia if my explanation wasn't clear.

- T'Challa is now a leader for the Zulu. He's from Marvel Comics and usually goes under the title of Black Panther

- Four more heroes have been added: Sun Wukong, G-8, D'Artagnan and CuChullain

- Three new wonders have been added: Greyfriar's School from the British Billy Bunter series, Iram of the Pillars which appears in Arabic myth, and Xanadu from the Coleridge poem of the same name.

- Religions now have special units. The units are: the Jewish Golem, the Christian Knight Templar, the Islamic Djinn, the Hindu Vimana, the Buddhist Shaolin Monk, the Taoist Xian, the Confucian Junzi, the Yuggoth Shoggoth, the Witch Broom Rider, and the Martian Grokker.

I've been trying to think of fiction-based random events for the mod to add to the handful I already have. Some of the events I already have include a town turning into a source of pigs (like Circe did in The Odyssey), two feuding families building a Monument in honor of their dead children (a la Romeo & Juliet), and gaining a source of hit movies after paying a laboratory for a satellite launch (MST3K). An idea for a random event could be the rise of organized crime. Crime syndicates (such as SPECTRE or Team Rocket- Pokemon supposedly takes place in an alternate version of Earth, after all) could suddenly appear in your cities and do things like sabotage your projects or steal money. Just a thought.

A (somewhat better) random event idea would be reincarnation, where a Great Person that you used earlier in the game returns to you.

Interesting...

I already have a recurring supervillain event where a villain appears in a city and raises maintenance costs and spreads unhappiness (I also have a superhero event which gives the opposite effect). I suppose I could work in some more crime-related events. I've been thinking about one where the mafia demand that a relative of theirs be in a Hollywood movie, and you can either comply with their demands and potentially receive a Great Artist, or wake up with a horse's head in your bed.

I don't know about reincarnation, just because it would be too hard to program, especially with the way Great People's Unique names work. Although I do want some hero units to reincarnate after they die.

Just tell me what you were doing when the mod crashed and I'll try to find the problem.

As far, as I remember, it never happened on my turn - or at least not as a reaction to something I did :-(. It also seemed to come quite randomly, I suppose something AIs were doing triggered it. But I did not detect any pattern in news I have seen - could be anything - combat, GP generation, usage of some strange effect.
It seemed to be more common as the game progressed, I have had no crash during ancient times and crash abput every 10 turns at renaissance.

Dude, you kick ass.
But wasn't Big Brother the leader of Oceania?
Otherwise, keep up the rocket sauce. :D

Yes, but the story takes places in London, and the ruling party is IngSoc, English socialism. Besides, it's implied in the book that America is the more dominant force in Oceanic policy, since the British Isles are renamed to simply Airstrip One, no more than a base for American forces.

So why does that make him the leader of Britain if he is situated or his power is in America?

I didn't say he was situated in America. I'm saying that Britain as a whole is supposedly subject to American foreign policy in the world of 1984 (I mean, even more than they are in the real world). Moreover, you have to remember that in the book, all Winston Smith knows about the outside world is fed to him by the party. So in reality there may not be a Eurasia or Eastasia or even an Oceanic superstate, all of this being a fiction created by the IngSoc party in order to keep the citizens of Airstrip One loyal and afraid. It's not unlike the kind of state-sponsored lies that come out of North Korea today.

In many ways, Winston Smith is something of an unreliable narrator.

Wait, how did it "crash every 10 turns"? Are you talking about a crash to the desktop?

Yes, screen going black, Microsoft error reporting window spawning, Civilization closing etc. Of course, not exactly every 10 turns, but quite often. Also, I have not encountered this problem with basic BtS or some other MODs - at least not with this frequency of crashes, for example MergedMod or FfH uses to crash sometimes, but only once or twice per whole game, so there is probably something in Fictionalization, that makes these crashes to come so often.

Okay, I think it's a problem with the python callbacks. Some of the python code I've added to the game (mainly from tsentom's wonders) appears to be crashing because I forgot to adapt the callbacks for the new code.

I've been playing both the version I've uploaded and the one I've been working on since then (which has an edited PythonCallbackDefines) and it's working fine so far. The next update should run smoother.

I'd add another leader (Atlas) for Atlantis. According to Plato, he was the first king of Atlantis and son of Poseidon and Cleito. He was not the same person as titan Atlas, who carries the sky in Greek myths.

Basics are described on Wikipedia under Atlantis (here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis)).

Nice! I'd been looking for a classical leader for Atlantis.

How about for a possible ending to the game instead of building a space ship you build Buck Roger's Ranger 3 deep space probe. You could switch up the techs and items needed to build his ship. LOL perhaps you could get a special bonus if you actually launch it in 1987. Just an idea. I haven't played it yet but I think this mod is a great idea.

I had been considering something like that, but I was thinking of using the Phoenix (the first warp-capable ship in the Star Trek canon), or maybe even The Time Machine.

Buck Rogers isn't a bad idea though. :)

Idea for wonder (because of atlantis present in the game); The Walls and Moats of Poseidon's city (yes I know, bad name) - that's those three concentric circles around the city of Atlantis.

Bonus: maybe a huge (+100% or maybe even more) defense in the city, and canal that connects the city, if it's not coastal, with closest sea tile (and enables construction of ships) + extra ship XP bonus (+5) in your empire.

Yes, I know it'd need coding.

That's a pretty neat idea! I don't have the programming skills to pull it off though.

Try asking tsentom1, he might be able to do it. It could be released as The Panama Canal or something.

Incans could be present in the game with Manco Capac, first Sapa Inca said to be son of the sun god Inti as a leader.

Leader Rascar Capac might fit in too, he is the mummy from Tintin: The Seven Crystal Balls.

Nice ideas, Orange! I'd wondered how I could fit the Inca into the game.

I'm still bouncing ideas around. Guys, tell me what you think:

- adding Utopia (from Sir Thomas More's work of the same name) as a new civilization, along with reintroducing the Inca.
- converting most of Firaxis' wonders into fictional counterparts. I've already changing Scotland Yard to the Diogenes Club from the Sherlock Holmes stories and The Sistine Chapel into Venusberg from the Tannhauser legend. So far I've thought of Coal City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Indies) for Ironworks and The Ministry of Love (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Love) for Mt. Rushmore. Can't think of anything else just yet.
- new heroes based on Great People. I'd need to get a respawning function for them first (so once they're used they can reappear in the owning civ's capital, but only a limited number of times). James Bond could be programmed this way as a respawning Great Spy, and Sindbad a Great Merchant. I could add Anansi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anansi) as an Artist Hero and Ayesha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_(novel)) as a Prophet Hero. Can't think of appropriate scientist, engineer, or general heroes, though.

Thoughts?

I can't say how glad I am that you know all this obscure mythology. This is great! Thanks Methyl! A divinely created warrior like this would be great for a respawning General.

I've been thinking...

In a future version I may decide to import the .dll from Fall From Heaven. Doing that could really simplify several of the features that I'm trying to implement in the mod. And maybe it could allow me to expand into new areas, like FfH-style items (the Holy Grail or the Maltese Falcon?) and unique features (like Pride Rock or Scylla and Charybdis) made for this mod.

But I haven't made up my mind yet. What do you think?

Oh the Golden Fleece definitely, but maybe the Philosopher's stone might be a better wonder than an item, or at least something that can be built by the player rather than being discovered. And asgard is a mythical realm, not an artifact, so I can't use that.

thomas.berubeg

I say yes, use FFH code.

regarding the philosopher's stone, you could have it be a wonder (like in FFH) that can be picked up as equpiment and moved around and used.

This is freaking awesome:goodjob:. If you don't mind I can give some suggestions. :)Godzilla as a hero for Japan would be awesome, and so would Dethklok for Celtia or as some sort of wonder or corporation, since their the seventh largest economy in the world. Zombies in general would be awesome replacements for barbarians, and Sacred Heart Hospital(Scrubs) would be an awesome wonder, as well as Dr. Manhattan, The Devil's Contract at The Crossroads (from the myth about Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil), The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Hannah Montana as a Great Merchant, and Saddam Hussein (from South Park) in as the leader of some country.

I must say, I commend your work and idea.

I've been considering a similar idea as, originally a thought to the next civ, now a sort of foundation for a mod, where mythology, magic and technology are all interwoven into the game. Most for my ideas are essentially from Age of Wonders and mythologies of the different nations, as well as setting up sacrifice, mana and spell research systems and create new techs and update the old ones to fit the mod. I plan to download the mod so as to get some more ideas.
Firstly, perhaps a better name for the Atlantis wonder may be "the Posidean Citadel", or something to that nature.

Also, I noticed you added Atrus, from Myst I presume, as an Artist, would you consider going as far as to add Yeesha as a Great Prophet? During the Uru games, I don't know where, Yeesha sets off to the Cleft and finds Calam, who after Atrus helps her further in the Art. She initially thought Calam was 'the Grower', one who would restore the D'ni, but Calam was murdered and in turn she destroyed him. After that point and learning more of the potential of the Art, she began to see herself as the Grower, thus becoming a prophet.

One final idea I have, originally designed by me, may be a bit too powerful, but I want to see some feedback all the same. My idea runs along the lines of; each mythology appear to have certain qualities that tend to define the path of nations and even give them additional character, so therefore I figure that perhaps adding special Belief modifiers can be added to each civ. Beliefs in this context are similar to Civics, they modify some civilization outputs, be it production, Culture, GP points, and their effects are throughout the nation. Beliefs also have one special wonder for each, be it the Statue of Zeus (Greek), the Pyramids (Egyptian), or the United Federation of Planets (Pop Culture, debating PC Wonder). I'm still working out a few of those. Anyway, have a read and tell me what you think. :) I need to post more anyway.

keltic07
Jun 20, 2009, 12:48 PM
Well maybe instead of each civ having a different belief, since the mod is more based in the world of fiction than in mythology per se, you could just have each civ have a special and powerful replacement for a civ. So Britain would have Big Brother is Watching instead of Totalitarianism, which would give you no :mad:and a hundred percent off in military production. Or you could have The Round Table instead of feudalism which gives you a knight each turn and triggers the search for the Holy Grail quest.

Oh and instead of the The Contract at the Crossroads wonder, you could just have a random event where the devil asks you to sell his soul, and if you do you get loads of  but a great artist.

I have been playing this mod for a few days. It's a lot of fun. I do have some comments though.

Very early on, when I was still exploring, the Hydra (or Kraken?) was spawned in the Celtic lands. The next turn they were destroyed and there was a large red dragon that walked past ignoring me. I sent a warrior to see what happened and they were now a barbarian city with no defenders, so hey, easy nice second city for me. But I think I would have been annoyed if it had happened to me.

What is the purpose of the flying pyramids (I think they're from Zardoz)? They look cool, but they suck as troop transport. My troops get to their destinations faster when on my roads. Maybe they're meant to get people across enemy or unclaimed territory?

Sherlock Holmes looks cool, but he doesn't do anything.

The Cthulhu Cultists produce a magenta rectangle when they spread their religion. Maybe they're supposed to do it? Maybe I'm losing sanity?

Horatio Hornblower always has an English flag even when it's created by a different country. Since I'm playing Big Brother, it was a touch disconcerting.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying the game. I'm playing Big Brother at Warlord level, and have just defeated China (we were always at war with Eastasia) and plan to conquer Spain next (we are always at war with Eurasia).

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like it!

The red dragon model is just a placeholder for a Hydra at the moment. He's also currently being used for Godzilla. And I have yet to install the rest of the artwork for the mod's three new religions. When you see a magenta shape like that it just means that the game is missing a texture somewhere. You're not going insane.

Sherlock Holmes' is supposed to automatically create a special building called 2241B Baker St. whenever he enters a friendly city. Fu Manchu has a similar effect, but in the current edition the code isn't working for either one.

And the flying pyramids are Vimanas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vimana), and they come from Hindu mythology, and can only be built in a city with Hinduism. They're meant to be early troop transporters designed to move units across impassible terrain, such as mountains or across narrow bodies of water. Although you're right, they are a bit slow.

I'll address as many issues as I can in the next patch.
