View Full Version : Mod idea: The Americas

First of all, I have no Mod-ing experience. This is just an idea I've been throwing around in my head, and I was wondering if any of the more competent members of these forums (i.e. anyone but me) would like to try to tackle it. The focus of this scenario would be on the early Americas; you would chose from one of the many Native American tribes in North America and the various tribes in South America. I haven't thought too much about who should be included, but that's what these forums are for. Basically, what I'd like to see done is the following:

1. Have a more developed map of the Western Hemisphere; the New World in the standard earth map just isn't as well developed as the Eastern Hemisphere. The Incan starting area needs some major re-working, especially the southern part of their dusty poop-shoot of a coast. I don't know, it just seems like the Americas are too small and empty (if you ignore the trees, that is).

2. Civs would include representitives from the different US groupings (East coast, Great Plains, West coast, etc.). Which tribes to include and what their UUs should be needs to be fleshed out. As for South and Central America, you'd of course need the Incas, Mayans, and Aztec, but it would be nice to fill out SAs east coast with one or two more tribes; I still need to do my research on who to pick.

3. With the technologies, something along the lines of the tech-tree in The Ancient Mediterranean Mod (which is an awesome Mod, btw; good job guys) would be nice. You might even be able to use the same one, with TAM's developer's permission, of course. It just needs to do a good job of keeping the game focused on the early eras of history. The various buildings and units that were added for TAM would need some tweaking to have a more Western tribal feel.

4. Again, like TAM, it would be nice to have more types of resources. Of course, they'd have to be changed to be more West-centric, but that's another thing to discuss. Stuff like buffalo, turquoise, etc would be nice.

5. It would be nice to tweak the appearance of the various units, but it's not essential. You could probably just reuse the model for the Native American's Dog-Soldier.

I hope you guys like this idea, because I'd really like to see it implemented. Hell, I don't even really want credit for it, so go ahead and feel free to steal the idea.
And admins, if you fell so inclined, please stickey the bajeezus out of this. :p

This isn't currently compatible with BtS, but CIV Gold 4.0 will include all 10 of these civs (currently 3.0 has the Sioux, Iroquois and Upaajut - will be adding Anishnaabek, Tillikum, Piliwni, Ni-Mii-Pu, Aniyonega, Vo'estaneo'o and Dinnehih), and will include Aztec, Inca and Maya from Firaxis, of course, plus the Olmec, Tupi and Yanomami from Central/South America.

You can check the status of 4.0 here:

Nice. I'm actually corresponding with someone right now about this thing, so there might be a few of these kind of scenarios out eventually. At the very least, we're gonna get out a map specifically designed for it. (guess I should check if FP's of NA has a good map already)

Please include one tribe from Arizona/American Southwest.

The major prehistoric tribes were the Anasazi, Sinagua, Hohokam, and Mogollon.

Later, well-known tribes would be the Navajo, Apache, and Hopi.

The Dinnehih tribe represents the American southwest, specifically the Navajo, Apache and Hopi. Leaders are Geronimo and Cochise, and the UU is the Codetalker that replaces the Marine.

Thanks for the input. Crap-computers and long drives back to college are stalling my progress for the moment, but this thing will hopefully start to take a more definite shape in the next week or so. You guys keep thinking of things you'd like to see done, and I'll hopefully have a better outline out soon.

Although I'm able to get on the forums, I don't have access to a computer with civ 4 on it right now. If anyone is interested in taking over with making a map of the Americas for this mod, please either send me a message or post something here.

There are a few fairly important groups that I never seem to see represented.

At the top of my list would be the Haida. Very unique culture. Extremely wealthy and materially sophisticated in relation to other North American groups. Masters of maritime warfare. Very well-known for their unique art style (this is one of the groups, along with a few neighbours like the Tlingit, that made totem poles). Built huge, ornately carved longhouses and large, oceangoing, richly decorated dugouts.

Then there are the a few Eastern woodlands and coastal groups that often get overlooked. At the top of that list for me would be the Wabanaki Confederacy, which included the Mi'kmaq, Abenaki, Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and Maliseet, all very important in the first contact era of English and French settlement. The Wabanaki Confederacy controlled a huge tract of land at the time of contact, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

Finally the Wyandot or Huron, another big eastern woodlands confederacy.

Although I'm able to get on the forums, I don't have access to a computer with civ 4 on it right now. If anyone is interested in taking over with making a map of the Americas for this mod, please either send me a message or post something here.

I wouldn't mind to have a go at the Maritime provinces area. Nobody ever gets it right and it's really interesting geography.

that sounds great. get in touch with NikNaks93; he's working on making the actual civs and whatnot. I'll also tell him to look out for you. Still no idea on when I'll actually be able to help, but it'll hopefully be soon. If all else fails, I'll at least be talking with Naks about what kind of units and such each civ should have.
