View Full Version : Several Unit Previews
Kinboat Jun 25, 2002, 06:26 PM I have several half-to-mostly finished projects and thought I'd show some previews for them. The main reason behind this is that I'm going away for a week or two and won't be able to finish them up before I go. So it gives you all a few weeks to drool over the previews  I thought at first i could finish most of them before this break but I've run into an impass on a few of them...
Here's the Lancia IZM Italian Armored car from WWI... I have the model and default animation finished so far
Kinboat Jun 25, 2002, 06:28 PM The Kha-Go Japanese Tank from WWII... I have all but the death animation on this one.
Kinboat Jun 25, 2002, 06:30 PM The German PanzerMorser SturmTiger... again all but the death...
Kinboat Jun 25, 2002, 06:32 PM And last I have the Space fighter that I started way back when... this is the attack animation and I really only need the death on this one too...
Ed O'War Jun 25, 2002, 07:09 PM Wow, those all look great!
zulu9812 Jun 26, 2002, 06:06 AM Love the tanks, especially the Italian armoured car. But the fighter...mmm...looks a bit wierd
Lab Monkey Jun 26, 2002, 06:16 AM I like it!
Dark Sheer Jun 26, 2002, 07:44 AM Lovely! I must say these are something worth waiting for. ;)

CivGeneral Jun 26, 2002, 07:25 PM After Serching the net I have found information on the Lancia IZM Italian Armored car. I hope this information is useful for anyone making a pedia out of it.

Lancia Ansaldo IZM - Italy
Based on the Lancia IZ Truck, the IZ armored car was an advanced design for it's day. For firepower the vehicle was equipped with a turret mounted machine gun and a further small turret on top with another (later models)- giving this car considerable firepower. Steel rails were added over the top tor cutting wire. Little used in WW1 due to terrain on which the Italians fought, many were sent to North Africa for police work. Total production by 1918 was 120. After WW1 some were sent to Albania where they formed the sole armored force of the country for many years. Some were sent to Spain and used by the Italians during the Spanish Civil War. At this point they performed poorly due to being outmoted.
Specifications
Crew: 6
Weight: 8140 lbs
Length: 17' 8.66"
Width: 6'

Smoking mirror Jun 26, 2002, 07:35 PM Kinboat, if you are still experiencing trouble with smoke effects, I suggest the following solution, create a sphere and adjust the size so that its 100%x100%x50% and place it next to the end of the barrel of the gun with the shortest dimention orientated like a beer mat on a pintglass (where the beermat is the sphere and the glass ids the gun barrel).
In the first two or thre frames use a textue for the smoke sphere that is white/yellow with @30% transparency, for the rest of the animation just continue increasing the overall size of the smoke by @20% each frame and make the texture pale grey (with a bump of texture map for random detail, dont want it to look like a big grey blob :) ) with @30% transparency, losing about 20-30% each frame until the smoke becomes almost totaly transparent.
I don't know how it will look in Moray, but thats how I do it in corel. Iv'e been experimenting with ading shape to the small explosion such as a starburst inside the smoke and a arrow head smoke shape added to the end of the barrel.
I use a greyscale Bitmap to be the surface texture for my smoke.
Kinboat Jun 26, 2002, 09:53 PM I've been experimenting with a number of diffferent transparencies, shapes etc... I've also tried using 'Media' which is supposed to more acurrately simulate cloud/smoke effects in Moray... But for some reason I didn't think of changing the level of transparency over the frames... I've just been enlarging and shrinking the sphere shapes... I'm so glad other people like you are out there sharing ideas, I just seem to miss these things. Thanks I'll give it a try as soon as I can.
nonnob3 Jun 27, 2002, 09:26 AM Just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was looking for a special unit for Italy!!!! :)
Awsome work buddy!!!
W.i.n.t.e.r Jun 27, 2002, 02:18 PM I suddenly feel so small....
Pablostuka Jun 28, 2002, 12:38 PM Great, master!!!!!just GREAT!!!!!!:goodjob::goodjob:
zulu9812 Jun 28, 2002, 12:55 PM Kinboat - you're not allowed to go on holiday. Come back...
Kingpin Jul 02, 2002, 08:10 AM Um... how long did you say you were going to be gone?
Kinboat Jul 02, 2002, 08:36 AM I have access to a computer... (didn't think I would) But it's not mine and I don't have the stuff to work on these while I'm gone, which will be until this coming Sunday. I thought the project would take longer than a week but now that I'm working on it I should get it done by Saturday or Sunday... So if all goes well I should finish most of these units up sometime during the next week.
Dark Sheer Jul 02, 2002, 10:58 AM Relax, Kinboat. Just ignore these greedy people and take your time. ;)
Kingpin Jul 02, 2002, 01:38 PM Dark Sheer,
It's not that we're greedy, it's more like... well, uh, I like to look at it as, um, well... Well maybe we're a little greedy, but only a little. Not very much. Hardly at all... Okay we're greedy. Very greedy. We like the awesome units Kinboat produces and we're just plain anxious to get them before we start a new game.
But it's a good kind of greedy, I think.
zulu9812 Jul 02, 2002, 04:04 PM it's always nice to be appreciated ;)
Kinboat Jul 03, 2002, 08:49 AM And I'm not on vacation (unfortunately) I'm actually painting a giant wall hanging for my sister... As this is along the lines of my first choice for a profession it takes precedence over my other hobbies :) And I know just how greedy you all are :) I can't wait for Smoking Mirror's next units.
Kingpin Jul 04, 2002, 10:44 AM Hey Kinboat,
Take a look at the Sturm Tiger on this page. It shows a little movie clip of one firing.
http://www.737thtankbattalion.org/menden.htm
Level Jul 05, 2002, 10:26 AM I realy like the Space Fighter and the Strum Tiger.
Have you tried the Space Fighter in Civ yet and does the attack fit? I think there is a problem with Longrange attack animation.
Kinboat Jul 05, 2002, 12:36 PM No Actually I haven't tested it in game... I knew the rockets would probably move past and through most other units, but I'm not really sure what to do, this is actually my third try at an attack for it and it's the best I came up with... As for the Sturmtiger... Holy! I didn't give my unit nearly enough recoil or smoke effects... Man that's nasty, thanks Kingpin maybe I'll increase the attack animation length and enlarge the smoke effects, cool site.
Kingpin Jul 05, 2002, 12:57 PM The Sturm Tiger fires a rocket / mortar projectile weighing almost 750 pounds! It can only carry around 13 of these things inside, which it needs to load with a crane. Essentially built upon a Tiger Tank chassis, they were used for infantry support, being able to demolish buildings with a single shot. I intend to give this baby bombardment capabilities. Those of you who havent checked out the Menden site above, go there and view the movie clip.
Kinboat Jul 06, 2002, 10:02 PM Oh yeah I intended it to be a self propelled artillery unit... I wasn't aware of the massive attack this thing really had, thanks again Kingpin :)
Kinboat Jul 07, 2002, 04:59 PM Here's an update on the Sturmtiger attack animation. I decided to make it a little more complicated after seeing the movie Kingpin posted a link to. And I'm back and working on these... although it's a little hard getting back into the swing of things :)
Kingpin Jul 08, 2002, 07:32 AM Kinboat,
I'm just glad that I've finally made a useful contribution to the forum, rather than just being a consumer of the end products of someone else's labour. Unit creation is not compatible with my lack of artistic talent. But at least I can dig up some useful info now and again.:)
Kinboat Jul 09, 2002, 08:15 PM I've finished up the SturmTiger and will be posting it momentarily...
CivGeneral Jul 09, 2002, 08:39 PM I've finished up the SturmTiger and will be posting it momentarily... -Kinboat
Ohhh. I cant wait :D. Any news about the Lancia IZM Italian Armored car and Kha-Go Japanese tank :D. Now I cant decide to have the strum tiger as a Germany's UU or be advalible to all civs :crazyeye:, Even though historicaly the Strum Tiger belonged to the Germans. :)
Kinboat Jul 09, 2002, 09:26 PM Still working on all these units... Kha-Go will probably be next on my list...
