Hello all.

Game Info:
Civs: 31
Difficulty: Regent
Win Conditions: All
Barbarians: None
Map: Marla Singer 256x200 world map, edited

Edits:
1) I removed all goodie huts and barbarian camps, although I'm sure I missed one or two.
2) I placed all the starting locations and quite a few towns as well. I wanted the start locations to be fairly realistic, but this posed an issue for me: playing as Germany, I am in an area dense with start locations. I would be going to war quickly, and wiping out alot of civs fairly quickly. So...

The majority of civs start with 3 towns. Some have only one, Germany (me) has two, some have even more than 3. England, Portugal, and the Netherlands in particular have quite a few. I gave the 'exploring' nations like that 'colonies' in the new world, in Africa and India to represent the trading companies, and on and around Australia. I will post a screenie, yes my first ever screenie, of some of the start locations to give you an idea.

3) The marla version I have saved only has 3 incidents of Uranium. Not only would this be unfair, imo, but a little boring as well. So I redistributed the resources, and then added in a few manually, like putting more oil in Alaska, the Middle East, and NE Russia. Europe is so dense, I admite I cheated and put in quite a few more resources there. Still, Germany is fairly handicapped from only having two towns.

4) I dropped the corruption to 0. Otherwise, countries like England, who have starting towns on several continents, would be facing corruption issues from turn one.

I have started this 'scenario' twice already, on slightly different maps, and really enjoyed playing it. After reading some of the great stories, I thought hey, why not start a thread for this one.

This is my first story, as well as my first time posting screen shots, so I hope all goes well.

Okay, on with the game.

Here is Europe from the editor:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Start_Europe.JPG

I won't bother showing you India and the east coast of North Amercia, but I have the screenies saved.

I should also add that cities can be built on mountains, I've greatly reduced pollution, cattle can be found on flood plains, and deserts and tundra are more productive when worked.

Harbors, Offshore Platforms, and Commercial Docks all increase food/shields/trade by one.

I think that's it for edits.

The German Kingdom is founded!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Start_Startpoint.JPG

As you can see, I have both gems and dyes close by. Greece quickly builds a city near the dye a few turns from now, and it will be a culture race to see who gets it. The Romans will be after the gems.

My starting settler I rush towards the gems. I can't afford to lose them, and the tactical terrain of the mountains, to the Romans.

My hope is that the Romans and Germans become strong allies. I see alot of the roman style in a militant Germany, and thus, in terms of this saga, I would like the pair to grow strong together.

Its quickly become a tech race already. The Netherlands, Portugal, France, and Spain all have more cities than I do. I try to make a trade with the Romans, and they aren't going for it.

The friendly French, though, are kind enough to give me masonry, the alphabet, and ceremonial burial for warrior code and bronze working. Little do the French know I will be acting less kind towards them in the near future. I intend to go after the isolated cities first. That means the French and Dutch.

With luck, the Romans take the far western lands. I'd like to see a recreation of the Roman Empire sprout somewhat.

Here is the situation by 2510 bc:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_2510bc.JPG

I managed to beat the Romans to the gems. The Greeks are set up to get the dyes though. I'd like to build a temple in Leipzig, but I need spear and settlers first.

The Netherlands had some nice terrain, and were charitable enough to share some of it with me. :)

I need cities fast, so the early German Kingdom is going to be pretty dense. Hopefully Berlin can build the Pyramids. I'm not going to bother with temporary wonders, unless I build the Templars.

Notice the flood of settlers moving through my kingdom. Let them go. I'm going to be building invading forces more than settlers, so let them build the cities for me.

Interesting start. I'm particularly curious what'll happen with the English, Dutch, and Portuguese with multiple start points.

Looks good. I like the multiple start point idea. :)

agonistes
Jan 06, 2008, 09:56 PM
Regarding the multiple start points:

Nearly every civ has a multiple start. From what I've seen, the first town you lay down in the editor is the capital. The starting units begin on the start point. I'm not 100% on that though.

As you can see in the screenies, the Dutch only have one city in Europe. This is because their start was somewhere else, and they didn't have an immediate settler handy, unlike the other civs around me.

Right now, the Dutch, English, Portugese, Spainish, and French are spreading throughtout the new world, Africa, India, and Australia, as well as hampering my expansion.

Those civs also are leading the tech race. Of course.

I think only two civs, the Celts and Vikings, have no start town, just a start point. The Celts spread fast though, and their UU will be a pain soon enough.

On a side note, I put Sumeria in Africa, because of space issues.

Things are progressing rapidly.

After getting what I consider the must haves (bronze, burial, masonry) I shoot for iron working. I doubt I can build the Great Librar before anyone else. Egypt has already finished the Colossus.

And presto:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Iron.JPG

Drat and bother! I wasn't planning on another city between Germany and Rome, but that iron is in a tough spot. No way my culture will get me that iron quickly enough to start building swordsmen for my plans.

Jan 06, 2008, 10:06 PM
I build my first worker town: Work Kamf a1. You can also see England and the Celts have me pegged in to the North.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Boxed_Northwest.JPG

Not good. I was hoping for a couple more cities in that region. Now they won't be able to produce units as heavily as I would like.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Boxed_East.JPG

Here is the eastern portion of Germany. Again, I'm boxed in. Expansion by conquest will have to start shortly. I'm eyeing the French and Dutch.

agonistes
Jan 06, 2008, 10:15 PM
Excellent. I build my first naval base, encompassing the iron. You will notice that I am building a road to the dye first, leaving the iron for now. This is because I am certain a race is on for the pyramids, and Berlin is going to be having some happiness issues before the pyramids are done if I don't get some more luxuries.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Iron_Naval_Base.JPG

I'll get to the iron asap though.

By 1450bc, I've pretty much maxed out all the space around Berlin. Here is a zoom out of the kingdom:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Zoom.JPG

Ivory belonging to the Ottomans is in the far southeast. Moscow is in that corner too. Russia had three towns to start with, plus the start settler. And not much competition. Although not very advanced tech wise, I bet they become a powerhouse down the road.

Woot! Some good news. My efforts paid off nicely!

First:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Pyramids.JPG

Then:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Monarchy.JPG

Things are coming together nicely for the first segment. *rubs palms together*

Now to start building my army up. It will be mostly all swordsmen, with a few catapults. I'll run spearmen with them to fortify towns I take, and build temples on the second turn after my troops have broken the resistance. I'll also keep a settler or two with the invading force to eat up open space and keep valuable real estate.

You can see Konisberg is building the palace. Yea, right. This is my just-in-case for the Great Library. Doubtful I get it, but you never know.

Wonder wise, I really want Sun Tzu, Leonardo's, and Bach's.

End of Chapter I, and probably the last post tonight. Subbing tomorrow at a school, so I want to get to bed early.

I've played Marla's map hundreds of times, and when I use realistic starts I normally go for Paris first when I play Germany. Its the German thing to do!

But take a gander at this:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Attack_Who.JPG

Some interesting things in this screenie.

First, a french city. If I attack Paris, I'm fighting on two fronts. Right now, I don't have a single swordsmen built: only two extra spears and one catapult. Preparing for a two front war will slow me down, and I need a fast expansion - remember, everyone else is sending out alot of settlers, and most civs have a head start on towns.

Second, as I mentioned already, Amsterdam has no support. She's all alone. Easy pickings! As long as the dutch don't get someone to fight me.

Finally, I've circled two spots that look good for building cities. One gives me another naval base and keeps Cumae from getting that cattle, the other is a good launching point against Marseilles and closes the gap where the wheat is. It also will strengthen that border.

I've started to send my forces towards the dutch, and when I have six or seven swordsman there, and some roads built, will start the attack. :D

Very interesting start positions. The English and Spanish don't look quite so powerful in India/North America anymore given America and India, but it looks like the Europeans could compete in South America legitimately given all the trees by the Incan cities. France looks like the strongest European to me in North America, America still looks stronger, though. Zululand looks like it could become quite powerful even with the colonies. I really like the idea, though, it'll be interesting to fight enemies with bases across the world!

Some of those Indian cities (and Hastings) have starting positions worth going bananas over, too. Three Wheats, two Bananas, and a gold at Madras, not to mention some hills and several bonus grasslands...

Still thinking Australia might be a juggernaut with England there, any competitors in the Land Down Under?

You don't have a bad start yourself, either. I might leave the pink circled tiles empty for now so you'll still have some big cities in Europe later on - after all, all the tiles in the area are covered by the fat crosses of some existing city - but the key now is expansion. And it looks like you're in a pretty good position for that right now.

Chapter II: The First Expansion

Wow, alot going on already.

First, as planned, the Great German Army advanced upon the dutch swine in Amsterdam, and was victorious!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Attack_Amsterdam.JPG

The french were next. Rather than turn the army around and advance upon Paris, I gave orders to have them march further east. Another dutch city had been sited, but I chose to ignore it for now. Its position did, however, make me wonder about an attack on Rome.

I started building a second army, the German East Expeditionary Force, and staged it just east of Paris.

But before the invasion could begin, the Russians joined the dutch in an alliance against me. Knowing I could quickly become involved in a world war, I decided to get some assistance.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Rome_Declared.JPG

I don't need Rome to go on the offensive, I just want to reduce the chances that they attack my soft underbelly while my armies are out on my wings. Bringing them into an alliance puts off any decision about attacking them for now.

For zero cost, the Romans declared war on both the Russians and Dutch. Most excellent! German forces immediately advanced into French lands.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Attacks_Zoom.JPG

Two French cities added to the kingdom! The screenie also shows the second Dutch city, and the First German Army advancing towards Moscow.

Cumae lies between Germany and Middleburg. This is why I considered attacking Rome when I discovered the second Dutch city.

But there was bad news as well.

agonistes
Jan 07, 2008, 08:38 PM
First bad news, and very very bad indeed. The Zulu had built the Temple of Zeus a few turns ago. I was actually 5 turns from the Great Library when a short wonder cascade fired, and I missed it by 3 turns.

So with 3 turns left on the GL, I switched to the Hanging Gardens and finished it. And realized a big mistake I had made. Three turns later I discovered Feudalism. If I had delayed the Gardens, or sped up my research, I could have switched to Sun Tzu's. Now I have 33 turns to go to build a wonder much more desirable than the Hanging Gardens. That's not the really bad news though:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Templar.JPG

My forces are occupied, and a major power to the north has the Templars! Ye gods! I can't afford to have the First German Army retreat from Russia, or Russian forces will start massing. Thankfully most of my cities have built libraries now, and are finishing up marketplaces, so I can build some gallies and a third army, and invade England. But this was not on the plan.

Then the Hittites declare on the Romans. Then Carthage! The First Punic War has begun. And then...

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Greco_Roman.JPG

Wow. Rome is going to feeling the big hurt. I would love to scoop up some Greek cities, but Crusaders are very, very nasty, and London is going to be sprouting them out. I must have the Templars! England, Russia, Greece...

I tried getting Spain involved on the German side, but they wanted too much cash.

Hopefully I can take Moscow, and get the Russians to cash out of the game.

Quintillus
Jan 07, 2008, 09:35 PM
Eh, yeah, England's not going to be easy, and it'll only get tougher. With their overseas colonies they can afford to keep all those Crusaders, and pretty soon it'll be nigh impossible to invade Britain. I suppose this is as good a time to any to go for it.

Nice job going east and west at the same time. Looks like you're well on your way to becoming a major power.

The First German Army invades Russia. Here is the route of advance:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Attack_Russia.JPG

I went directly to that hill first. It offered a view point, and I didn't want the Russians to start a counter attack from that point. Once I held the hill, I turned Southeast, and took Moscow.

I've highlighted both the Russian border, and the ivory near the Ottomans.

Not long after, I get this:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Map_Russia_Peace_Offer.JPG

I was right. The Russians would try to cash out. But I still have several turns left with my Roman alliance against them. I don't want to anger the Romans despite them being at war with about 7 civs right now. I turn the Russkies down.

At this point I've been building up a 2nd German Army near the Greeks, to protect my iron in case they attack. The Expeditionary Army has been rebuilt to the North, and my small fleet of galleys is nearly ready.

With firm hearts, and Moscow defended, the First Army performs a classic pincher move on the Ottomans.

Here is a zoom out of the German Kingdom.

I've shown the routes of advance, color coordinating by time.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_Zoom.JPG

Currently I'm using catapults to harass English shipping lanes, and using some slaves to prevent landings on hills and mountains around Oxford. I'm not done with the English yet.

I'm not sure where to go next besides furthering my conquest of English lands. If the Celts build up an army of swordsmen, that could be a costly, and lengthy, campaign, so I should probably turn north. Middleburg, a dutch city, is up there too. But the Romans are in my way. If I turn north, I may have to go through the Portugese.

I'd like to take that Greek city in the sea, but have absolutely no southern navy yet. Constantinople is stragically placed, but if I have a northern campaign, I might have to use both armies up there.

My war advisers meet in secret council, somewhere near Berlin...

Very nice expansion - most of Europe by 210 BC! Has anyone else put up medieval troops (besides the English Crusaders) yet? It seems like you're just running through Europe.

From a purely military standpoint, ignoring diplomatic treaties, I'd go against Rome next since they've got cities all around your borders. Though I'd probably take Ireland first. Barring an attack on Rome, it does look like the Celts would make a good foe, especially given your apparently strong navy.

Very interesting that the Dutch get Sun Tzu's in Australia. They may or may not use it effectively, though.

The last messenger arrives in England. The queen is gracious:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_210bc_English_Treaty.JPG

Now the Germans are at war only with Greeks and Dutch.

The english cities are scattered. One is in a new world, far from Germany. Another is in a land called Australia. And the last is in the frozen north. Doubtful we can keep them all, if any, but worth the effort.

According to the ambassadors, Germany is entering a Dark Age. Other nations have discovered amazing technologies, like Education, the Printing Press, and even Chemistry! While Stratvug prepares his forces, we make efforts to gain some of these new technologies.

Among the other nations, there is great discord. Alliances are being formed and shattered everwhere.

Spain and Portugal go to war with England. Spain then declares on Portugal. Several other wars break out. Rome sides with Spain against the Queen. I'm concerned about my Roman friends more than ever now. Silvermane wants to invade Portugal from his position on the Russian border. But there are many skirmishes involving many nations around Moscow, and his force is needed there.

England, pressed by many powerful nations, makes a cheap trade:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_150bc_Printing_Press.JPG

Using this new found technology, Germany quickly makes contact with other nations, and then uses these new contacts to make even more trades:

Here is the map. Its Marla Singer's with some edits. I actually like an older version a bit better, because when I started this game, I was rushing, and didn't drop resources around cities that could have used them (mostly around the starting towns of civs with one start town). I also only gave China two towns, not three. Enjoy!

Side note: the civs with colonies are the strongest right now. Germany is about sixth or seventh on the scoreboard. I'll post another scoreboard towards the end of Chapter III.

Quint: Yes, lots of troops more advanced then my forces. Tons of longbowmen floating around, belonging to Egypt, Portugal, Netherlands... The English used longbows against me during my invasion there. The Dutch used knights to take my city in Australia before I had any knights.

I actually consider this a bonus though. I'd rather the other civs keep up with me in technologies so I'm not powering through backwater militaries with far superior forces. Having so many colonies is paying off in this regard. On the other hand, I was forced to make alot of trades for techs even though my own tech pace is fairly fast.

I seemed to have forgotten to take a screenie, but I traded printing press to two civs for gpt with Egypt and... Spain I think. I more than made back what I gave to France.

Chapter III: The Great Northern Campaign

General Strat has begun his invasion into the northern lands. Objective: pacify the region, unify the area, and build some shipyards.

Shortly into the campaign, most of his fleet of support ships is sunk by a lone Dutch galley:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_30ad_Celt_Sunk_Ship.JPG

Meanwhile, outside Moscow, Carthaginians are gathering... so far, they leave Germany when asked, but its only a matter of time...

General Morgan has taken his forces to sea, and conquers a Greek city:

His forces are nearly gone now, however, and it will be some time before the 2nd Army is battle ready.

In 90ad, the Byzantine scum join the Russians in an alliance to destroy the Germans!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_90ad_RusByz_v_Germ.JPG

Byzantine ships will continue to harass German troops for decades. There is just not enough of a German naval presence in the Med. Sea to counter attack, and the 2nd Army is too depleted to attack by land. For now, General Morgan and his troops dig in.

In 110, Germany makes peace with Greece, and gains two cities in the bargain. One is on an island along the southwest coast of Africa.

Germany then makes a ROP agreement with Rome. This should help the Romans with their many wars. More importantly, this sets the stage for a later military deployment.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_280ad_Brachus.JPG

Beginning with a twin assault on the Celts, the Eastern Expiditionary Force (EEF) advanced through the Celtic lands, clearing the Dutch from Europe as they went.

Brucha and his knight divisions ripped through the last Portugese city in Europe, and they assaulted the vikings. The German north was unified at last!

The unification also helped bring the formerly Greek city of Delphi closer to the German borders.

Several of the conquered cities recieved divisions of engineers. Their orders: convert to shipyards asap!!!

Thanks! I'm not getting much feedback, and I wonder if its enjoyable. Tonight I'm going to go back and shrink the large images in this post. When I started it, I didn't know how to shrink them.

I only named two generals after players so far: Quintillus and Brucha, because their stories inspired mine.

Brucha is the only knight right now. Morgan and Silvermane are Medieval Infantry. Quint, Stragus, and Aver are crusaders. I am fond of using crusaders as officers, and tend to keep them around a long time. Rommel will be a panzer I'm sure, though.

Btw, both Brucha and Quint died once already. If they die again, they will be replaced. They have been warned.

Just a quick run down before I head home from work:

Lord General Brucha commands the EEF (Eastern Expeditionary Force) with General Stratgus under him (although Stratgus was responsible for the Great Northern Campaign). They are charged with exploration of new lands, reacquisition of rightfully German territory, and pacification of barbaric tribes. High quality troops.

Lord General Quintillus commands the SEF. Charged with stabilizing border kingdoms and vassal states. Troops are slightly less quality.

General Morgan commands the 2nd German Army. The real grunts of the military, but very proud, these boys are tasked with defending and preserving the western and southern borders of the German Kingdom.

General Silvermane commands the 1st German Army. Germany's main defenders.

Lt. Commander Aver (my personal favorite) is responsible for the whole and complete defense of Great Britain, and such interests as that duty might entail.

Stratgus is hailed as the real genius, but Morgan has been quietly successful operating at times with a severely undermanned force.

As for Quint... never before has a German officer had to call for reinforcements. The Battle of York was an embarrassment to the kingdom.

Its rumored that Silvermane may be facing execution for drawing the Russians into a conflict after being ordered to only defend Moscow.

Aver's command in Britain has been impeccable.

I have no naval commanders as yet. Any ideas?

Offensive plans halt as the generals debate the next move.

Quintillus wants to sail from Lisbon into Carthage. England has taken two Carthaginian cities there, an indicator that the region is weak. However, Carthage has managed to get a short stack near Moscow. Not much of a threat, but invading Carthage would mean Silverman is stuck at Moscow.

Morgan suggests using Controlled Resource Assignment:
By invading Babylon, we could give two luxuries (ivory and dyes) to half the empire, along with iron and horses, and saltpeter. The other half would have ivory, dyes, and horses. This would allow our larger cities to produce horses every one or two turns. The horses would then sprint to the area connected to Saltpeter and upgrade to Cavalry, while keeping the tech rate lower to increase income (currently at 4 turns per tech and earning 150gpt). This would easily double or triple the growth of Germany's armed forces. The drawback is not having Leonardo's, which is in the new world.

Brucha and the EEF are still up north, while the region settles and roads are built.

The newly acquired cities designated as Shipyards are far from being ready to produce our first real navy.

Work Kamf a1 has recieved orders to build workers and settlers only. Work Kamf b1 has been built, and Work Kamf b2 is in the works.

I've been noticing a lot more lonbowman and medieval infantry. While Greece and the Byzantines are all but finished, and Spain has but one city left in Europe that I am aware of, the other civs are growing stronger.

Babylon, which is Germany's major obstacle in acquiring saltpeter, is stronger than it first appeared.

The longer we wait, the more difficult it will be to acquire the precious resource.

Aside from Carthage and Babylon, two other potential targets are Egypt and India, both superpowers. Dare Germany try her strength against such mighty civs? Which general will be entrusted with the task?

Find out in Chapter IV!

Chapter IV: A NEW AGE

290ad:

Having discovered Military Tradition, Germany has a new concern: gunpowder! What was previously considered a novelty has become a precious strategic resource!

Long has Germany considered an attack on both Rome and Spain, the last two civs to have cities in Europe. Destroying them both would complete Germany's dominace over the region. Alas, the Kingdom has alliances with both.

Then some interesting news:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_280_Rome_v_Spain.JPG

At this point it does not change Germany's plans, but it will be interesting to see if Rome can take lonely Madrid, the Spainish capital.

Some other news of note is that England has taken two Carthaginian cities. I can't believe this was not noticed before. Luckily, Lord General Quintillus overheard some tavern maids speaking of it.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_290_English_Taken_Carth.JPG

The cities are a short hop from Lisbon where Quint is stationed with his SEF and three Caravels. He drags his troops from the pubs, where they have been celebrating the fall of Lisbon, and makes preparations. The build up of forces to take Madrid and attack Rome must be put off yet again.

Germany quickly tries to make peace with England in exchange for Gloucester, located just north of Oxford:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_290_Gloucester.JPG

England is not interested. Gloucester will remain in English hands for some time it seems.

A Byzantine ship, one of those bombarding the Spainish coast, is seen off of Lisbon. Luckily, German ships were anchored close by:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_290_Byzantine_Ship.JPG

The Byzantines sink one Caravel, but their ship is destroyed. Soon they will have no ships left in the open seas.

Needing many more workers, a new Work Kamf, b1, is constructed. With minimal effort, it will be popping out workers quickly.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_290_work_camp_2.JPG

Plans for more Work Kamfs are being made.

General Silvermane and the 1st German Army continue to hold near Moscow:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_290_Hot_Spot.JPG

Carthaginian, Ottoman, and Egyptian forces are heavy along the border. Egyptian longbowmen come and go. Egyptian knights will soon make an appearance here.

General Stratgus gathers his troops, and stations north of Work Kamf b1, preparing to strike Cumae, a Roman city, should the time come. Lord General Brucha is guarding the eastern frontier for the time being, but will shortly head south with his knights.

The saltpeter seems so far away...

The Dutch request an audience. They request peace. They are even willing to give up a city or two. Alas, I have an alliance with Spain against them. Perhaps in the future...

Knowing there will be some heavy activity involving Germany south of Moscow, something must be done to reduce the number of wars that might break out. Egypt is the local superpower, but none of the generals are inclined to form an alliance with them ( ;) ). Instead, knowing that the Carthaginians have lost cities to the English, we entreat them instead:

Germany and Carthage sign an alliance to destroy England!

Then:

Both Babylon and the Hittites are close to German borders, and have a decent military. The Hittites in particular are close to lightly defended German cities. Tough break Hannibal. We'd love to help, but... we have other plans.

Out of nowhere:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_300_English_Iroquois2.JPG

Near Moscow, another Egyptian army appears:

General Silvermane urges us to ambush the Egyptians before they can ambush us.

General Morgan arrives at Caesara. Another Egyptian knight is seen.

This will not benefit German troops should they invade Babylon after saltpeter. Expanding the border will not win us the iron back. To the west is a greek border. It belongs to the last Greek city, on a one hex island.

Adrianople, the last city in the region of the once mighty Byzantine Empire, lies ahead of Morgan's forces. It was built on a mountain! This could be a struggle, as the Byzantines have pikemen.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_300_Adrianople_Mountain.JPG

Egypt signs a military alliance with hated England against our new friends the Carthaginians. At least that ensures that Egyptian troops near Moscow will be preoccupied. Then Egypt signs an alliance with the Ottomans against Carthage. Little do the Ottomans know this has just sealed their fate...

On the way to Adrianople, Morgan's troops kill off a Byzantine infranty. Germany requests that Egyptian troops leave German lands, and the Egytian army near Moscow retreats... arriving at Caesara!! They are now behind our lines!!

Germany declares war on the Ottomans! General Silvermane attacks!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_320_Ottomans_war_archer.JPG

His first division of knights is sent packing by Ottoman archers. :(
More German troops move up, hindered by Roman legions who get in the way.

At Sagres, the English longbowmen kill another division of spear, leaving just one spear defending. Rather than rush the infantry, the spear is upgraded to a pikeman.

The Greek alliance pays off! Our new friends the Greeks destroy what is likely the last Byzantine ship in the sea.

German forces are ready for a dual attack on Istanbul and Adrianople.

With Egyptian troops behind our lines, Morgan is forced to placate the Egyptians:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_330_deal_Egypt.JPG

The war between England and Germany heats up again. The English cowards attempt a landing near Oxford. Thankfully Aver was prepared, and defeats the longbowmen with his knights.

Then at Sagres the lone longbow division attacks our one remaining defender. Will our only city in the new world remain in German hands?

Yes! The pike is redlined, but is victorious!

Far, far to the east, an English spear is taken out by a German longbowman. The settler he was guarding is enslaved, and our first two workers in the area begin cutting timber.

And Lord General Quint arrives in Africa, just escaping another Byzantine ship!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_330_yay_Quint.JPG

The dual attack...

Silvermane's army pounds Istanbul. The city quickly falls! But Morgan is not so fortunate. After losing three divisions to the city on the heights, he is forced to retreat to Caesara. With Egyptian forces just west of Caesara, he cannot afford to lose many troops.

340ad:

After the Hittites, our lone ally against Russia, make peace with the Russians, Germany does the same. Russia cedes us two cities!

Another Byzantine ship is sighted. This one is engaged by German caravels near Paris, and sunk.

With the arrival of Lord General Brucha and the EEF, German forces close on and conquer Iznik, northeast of Moscow. The Ottomans have only one city left in the region.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_340_Silvermane_Iznik.JPG

To the west, Lord General Quintillus takes an English city, our first on Africa!!

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_340_Quint.JPG

With the Byzantine ship staying anchored off of the coast of Spain, it looks like his fleet will be able to carry him to the next English city.

Steady enough growth, amazing how early it still is. I noticed both the Ottomans and Egyptians appear to have Knights roaming around. It's become a dangerous world. Is there any Saltpeter in Africa you could easily swipe? Progress in Asia Minor seems to be the slowest of anywhere right now thanks to that mountain.

Actually, if I attack Persia, I'm only one city from saltpeter. I've been considering it every turn.

Yes, lots of knights. Finally two real stacks too, one is Zulu and right next to my city, think it has 5 ancient cav and two knights. They are at war with Spain, hopefully that is what that is about.

The US has become the #2 world power (behind me). I will post a screenie of the top 10.

Yea, that mountain is killing me. I've moved up some trebuchets, and started a proper siege. I noticed Babylon has a city on a mountain too. Wonderful.

I just discovered for myself that Korea's UU has lethal land and sea bombardment (in another game I'm playing). Neat. I've been using them on Sid level games. If only I could score some saltpeter with them, too.

Any chance of an update soon? I know how busy it can be once the semester starts up, being a student myself, but I figured it couldn't hurt asking, at least showing interest. This quickly became one of my favorite reads on the forum.

Sorry Quint, HD crash. I'll try to get something up tomorrow. I have some screenies saved, I don't think I lost them.

I'm glad you are enjoying it.

I found this thread the other day and read it straight through; I must say I'm enjoying it immensely. :) I recently finished a game as Germany myself, also one one of Marla's maps -- the European one.

Despite no longer having coastal cities (that I am aware of), Byzantine ships continue to plague me. Decades earlier, the last Byzantine Dromon was believed to have been sunk. Alas, that is not the case.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_340_Byz_Ship_UL.JPG

This is one of several Dromons that German forces have encountered. It takes two Caravels to sink it.

Next to York, that is actually a Carthaginian Galley, not an English one. Carthage managed to build a couple of cities north and northeast of Ireland. They are frequenting the shipping lanes around England.

Notice some of the coastal batteries Aver has been placing.

Germany ends the very long Russian-German war, gaining Yakutsk from the negotiations. Silverman earns the nations first Iron Cross medal.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_340_Yakutsk.JPG

German lands on the eastern frontier are expanding due to cities gained from peace negotiations. This is most fortunate, because the land has so little infrastructure (no roads), and so many nationalities there, it would have a huge utility cost to invade. Not even Silverman desires to march much further east. Indeed, the eyes of all of Germany's military commanders, excluding Aver, look south.

By 350, our military excellence has brought Germany to the forefront of the global community:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_350_most_powerful.JPG

Perhaps offended by this, Greece, our naval allies against the Byzantines, joins in an alliance against us with the English. Just when we were quelling the Byzantine navy, now we have a Greek one to worry about. And the last Greek city in the Med. is on a one-tile island.

Wunderful!

Here is Sparta, last Greek stronghold on the Med:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_370_Sparta.JPG

Otto orders General Morgan to take it. Quint says: "Good luck with that."
:(

On the African coast, Lord General Quint is victorious again. Germany begins to develop a significant presence in Africa.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_370_Hadrumetum.JPG

However, as you can see in the screenie, Quint's forces are depleted. It is unlikely he will be able to advance any further for some time. He sends a request to Berlin for reinforcements. "Where the hell are all of our troops? No reinforcements for decades! Holding here."

Lord General Brucha and the EEF launch a lightning quick strike against Bursa. Without a doubt, the region from Bursa, past Adrianople, down to the Red Sea is some of the best real estate in the world to defend. It is an amazing natural boundry. Brucha's quick strike cements Germany's hold over the northern half of the natural border:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_370_Bursa.JPG

Brucha makes note of the power of such a lightning fast assault. "If only we could have our most heavily armored troops moving this fast!" he says.

Now if only Morgan can take Adrianople. However, the scene is not pretty. Egyptian forces are dense around Caesara. Babylonian troops skitter back and forth. Finally, Dutch forces show up, seemingly having come from across half the continent to attack Germany. Then Sumerians!!! Who is next, the Zulu???

Germany needs to quiet the borders. Our forces are scattered, Adrianople is stopping troop movement through the hills: Brucha's EEF cannot back up Morgan. Trebuchets, pike, and infantry are building up around Adrianople, but the few strikes Morgan launches are easily repelled. A full assault is out of the question, particularly with so many armies belonging to other nations marching about.

Germany makes peace with the shattered Ottoman nation, and the farflung Dutch. A German scout heads out to get a troop count on an Egyptain force in the area:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_390_egypt_stack.JPG

:( :( :(

And then...

The Zulu appear!!!
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_390_zulu_stack.JPG

This must be prime real estate!

Obviously Morgan's forces are at a global crossroads of sorts. How can he invade Babylon after saltpeter while maintaining military dominance of the region?

400 a.d., and the Zulu look serious:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_400_zulu_stacks.JPG

Thank god German scientists make a breakthrough. Germany may not have saltpeter, but:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/117008/Gambit_400_egypt_musket.JPG

We have riflemen!! Now to make some.

That first screenie, btw, shows a Swiss Merc. Division. Before making peace with the Dutch, Morgan's forces took one out. And lost about half of his army doing so. Future plan: leave those bad boys alone! Hence peace with the Dutch.

For now, focal points are Adrianople and saltpeter. Quint and Strat are trying to build their forces up. Brucha and Silverman are in holding patterns. Aver is fighting off English landing parties. Morgan... has alot on his plate.

Holy hell, good luck to your troops in Caesarea. How many troops are participating in the siege of Adrianople now?

Jan 25, 2008, 01:06 PM
Hmm...looking at the situation around Adrianople, it seems maybe you should just make peace with everyone around there now, and then move on to Babylon, if you still care about the saltpeter at all. If you can get a right of passage with the Byzantines you can still move troops from Russia south to Babylonian lands, and can deal with the Byzantines when you have Tanks or Artillery (with one city they probably won't get to riflemen).

Extremely fast tech pace. It's usually pretty quick on Emperor+, but 400 A.D. Industrial for Regent is insane.

Well, I'm chomping at the bit to play some more, but the HD crash and subsequent reboot removed Civ III from my computer. I can't find the CDs, and none of the local stores seem to have any copies. Last hope is Best Buy, I'll call them when they open.

I may have to just post the last save and somebody else can finish this. This could be the end of my civ career...

Sweet: Best Buy has one copy of Civ III "Complete". I'm hoping that means it has PtW. I have the C3C cd. So hopefully after work tonight I can install, load, and play some more turns.

Great, the game was still saved!

Played a bit. If you thought Caesara was surrounded, wait until you see the formations around Babylon. Still no saltpeter. I'll post when the troops need a rest.

Holy hell, good luck to your troops in Caesarea. How many troops are participating in the siege of Adrianople now?

Last look Silvermane is there with about 4 Pike divisions, 4 Trebuchets, 3-4 Infrantry, and columns of Brucha's knights (4 divisions) moving up through the hills from the desert towards the siege. But Chinese Riders are appearing near Moscow now. Egypt has Cavalry.
