View Full Version : Unit Request: Colonial Musketman
Kal-el Jun 26, 2002, 11:35 AM I know Animepornstar was working on a unit like this, but it has been a long time since his last update and I get the impression its not getting done. So, here I am requesting that somebody out there put this unit together. I am attahing a beautiful pic that shows EXACTLY what I am looking for, color scheme and everything. Personally I need this animation for my Double Your Pleasure Mod, but I am sure that a lot of other people would love to see this unit in action as well.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/colonial_musketman.jpg
As you can see the coat would be the civ color, the pants white, the tips of his boots that stick out can be black or brown, the hat should be black with a civ color trim. I sure hope somebody accepts the challenge.
CivGeneral Jun 26, 2002, 12:37 PM This unit would be great to use in between the musketmen and the riflemen. I hope some one sees this and create this unit.
sjeng Jun 27, 2002, 12:06 AM Damn, that would be a great unit; it has quite a historical significance. Great idea :goodjob:
Morbius Jun 27, 2002, 04:49 AM something inbetween musketman and rifleman is long overdue indeed.
great idea.
if an artist would create it, it would be a great thing, i think. :)
pesoloco Jun 27, 2002, 03:36 PM I like the idea.
When I finish the trucks, I can start it if you want.
I think I saw something like that on the civ site, but it never made it to the game.
pesoloco Jun 27, 2002, 04:30 PM kal-el posted these pictures on another thread:
(these are the pics I was talking about before)
pesoloco Jun 27, 2002, 04:31 PM here is another
Kal-el Jun 27, 2002, 04:33 PM I think the model at the top is cooler looking though.
Kryten Jun 27, 2002, 06:48 PM I don't know if this helps, but here is a quick ROUGH preview I knocked up in just over an hour after a late one at the pub ( ;) )
(As you know, I'm far, far, far too busy with the Macedonians to start any new projects at the moment! :crazyeye: )

that looks good. :goodjob:
If I do make this unit, I may just use that.

yeah , it is. I like your figurine thing. And the picture shows various angles too. that helps a lot.
Dark Sheer Jun 27, 2002, 10:05 PM Looks like Kryten has perfected the cut & paste thingy. ;)
nonnob3 Jun 28, 2002, 08:40 AM Looks interesting.
Kryten, the MASTER of cut & pasting :)

I agree! :goodjob:
Kryten Jun 28, 2002, 02:36 PM ....it's not cos I'm clever, it's cos I'm lazy! :p :D
nonnob3 Jun 28, 2002, 03:35 PM Kryten ,
always joking with an animation. Great sense of humor! ;)
Funny ...........hahaha
Dark Sheer Jun 29, 2002, 09:56 AM Thanks to the suggestion from Kryten I started to work on this request with everything else on hold until I finish this one. ;)
Here is what it looks like for default, fortify and run. :D
Kal-el Jun 29, 2002, 10:12 AM can you remove the gold epaulettes from his shoulders? Those are the mark of an officer not an infantryman.
Kryten Jun 29, 2002, 11:31 AM Marvellous animation Dark Sheer! :goodjob:
Mind you, I do agree with Kal-el; he would look better without the yellow epaulettes. Also, would it be possible to stick a bayonet on the end of the musket? :)
Other than that, this figure looks perfect for just about every european nation and their colonies in the 18th century, from the War of the Spanish Succession, though the Severn Years War, the American War of Independace, and right up to begining of the French Revolution!
(BTW, if anyone does wish to create an 18th century Grenadier, may I suggest using Dark Sheer's figure and giving him a brown 'conical' hat with a brass vertical front plate and the backpack of the Infantryman. This will make him look 'heavy', and fits the Grenadier's role of heavy infantry.)
Good job matey! :D
Kal-el Jun 29, 2002, 11:42 AM a few other requests:
1) can you give him the white gaiters (the cloth that covers his lower leg and boots) as in the picute above. Again boots were generally for officers and cavalry.
2) can you add on the backpack, canteen and cartridge box
3) and I second the bayonet
I know I am being picky here but I just thought I would put in the request.
Kal-el Jun 29, 2002, 11:45 AM here is another image that may be helpful
Kal-el Jun 29, 2002, 12:01 PM here are some more pictures
Kal-el Jun 29, 2002, 12:02 PM you'll notice that this guy's gaiters are black. I would prefer it if the new animation had white gaiters.
Dark Sheer Jun 29, 2002, 12:15 PM The gaiter's color can be easily fixed when everything is done. All I need to do is use Animation-replace color in Animation Shop for it. ;)
CivGeneral Jun 29, 2002, 02:42 PM When you are done with the Colonial Musketman Dark Sheer, Can you also make the Iron Frigate. Please :D ( I know that some one has created the ironram and there is already an Ironclad in CivIII.) The Information is in this forum Unit Request: Iron Frigate (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=352959#post352959)
Anyway Great job Dark Sheer :goodjob:.
Jon Shafer Jul 14, 2002, 05:49 PM Ahhhh, this will be of incredible use for me. I encourage everyone to make as many as they can! :D This will be very useful for my Napoleonic scenario. I plan on getting it in PtW, so anyone's graphics I use, I will be sure to give credit for. :)
zulu9812 Jul 15, 2002, 06:46 AM has any progress been on this unit, btw?
Jon Shafer Jul 15, 2002, 11:22 PM That's what I was wondering also. With the editor coming on Friday, time is wearing thin...
Iknowkungfu Jul 21, 2002, 10:51 PM Just thought I'd bring this up again... as this unit would be more than perfect for the later stages of my 1492 scenario. If someone could make ones just like those cut and paste pictures it would be fantastic. :goodjob:
Dark Sheer Jul 22, 2002, 01:00 AM I am working on it. Hope to finish before this weekend. ;)

Great!! Thanks, this will be excellent for my next scenario... ;)
CivGeneral Jul 22, 2002, 04:48 PM ...And use it as an intermediate unit between the Musketmen(Musketeer:French) to the Riflemen. :D.
BoneDoc Aug 01, 2002, 03:01 PM Darksheer, what ever happened to this one?
dannyevilcat Aug 02, 2002, 01:14 PM This unit has to get made! Firaxis should never have axed it from the game. DS, I hope you haven't abandoned it, or put it on the backburner!
CivGeneral Aug 04, 2002, 02:25 PM IS who ever making the Colonial Musketman just teasing us or is it totaly abbandoned? :(
one_man_assault Aug 05, 2002, 01:00 AM :mad:IM MAKING A REVOLUTIONARY WAR SCENARIO SHEER I KINDA NEED IT....chop chop on it:goodjob: nice job on it so far doh ;)
hzm Aug 06, 2002, 06:58 PM I'm pretty sure he said he was going to china and coming back on the ninth.
dannyevilcat Aug 06, 2002, 07:10 PM I think it's amusing that it's always Kal-el's requests that take DS so long to make. Remember the Hummvee, anyone? ;)
Dark Sheer Aug 07, 2002, 02:18 AM Yeah Yeah! :p Thousand appologies for not manage to finish the animation before I left for China. By the way, you guys do know that I am in China since 27/7 right? ;)
As usual, just before the travelling all of a sudden tons of things pop up. I will complete this one when I am back. Its getting to be alot of work for this unit. At first I though I can just replace the black shoes using replace color....then I realise black is used in lots of other part of the body as well! :o So I end up changing the color bit by bit. :p Therefore this one will take longer than usual. :D
Civanator Aug 07, 2002, 11:11 AM oh man. i was hoping for this unit. Anyway, you haven't made a unit in a while DS.
Civanator Aug 10, 2002, 09:04 AM hey can you finish the unit now? i heard you were back.
History Guy Aug 11, 2002, 10:56 AM Yes, I'd love to see this unit finished...it'd make my Zulu Armies more powerful than ever! :D
Dark Sheer Aug 11, 2002, 11:23 AM Yup, I am backed just this morning (Well, more like 2am in the morning ;) ). Give me a few days to catch up on my Succession Games and I will continue the work on this unit. :)
Jon Shafer Aug 11, 2002, 11:28 AM Thanks DS, it'll be great once (if ;)) you get it finished. :)
I'll probably work it into my mod (with a massive tech restructuring) once you get it done.
one_man_assault Aug 11, 2002, 11:30 AM whooo hooo [dance]
now I can have a colonial rifle man for my american revolution scenario
Civanator Aug 16, 2002, 07:40 AM DS??!!??!!?? are you working on the unit?????
Jon Shafer Aug 16, 2002, 11:56 AM Yeah! C'mon DS, this is the only unit I really care about getting. :(
hzm Aug 16, 2002, 09:24 PM Yeah come on! This is a very important unit that a lot of people want. I can only hope you haven't abandoned this unit in favor of another weird unit like that spider you made.
one_man_assault Aug 17, 2002, 01:40 AM please DS there is a major demand for this unit...dont let us down

Hey, dude, why are you freaking out? I also really want it, but DS is just a volunteer unit maker, taking his own time to make it.
ViceRoy Aug 17, 2002, 10:43 AM Give DS break he will get it ready when he has time.
I want to thank DarkSheer of making great units and especially about Bandit and Canoe units which serve well my mod that I'm currently making.
Thank you and looking forward to this unit as well.
Dark Sheer Aug 17, 2002, 11:53 AM Sorry for the delay, but I just manage to catch up on all my succession game (4!) after a week. :p
I will get to work on this unit. :)
one_man_assault Aug 17, 2002, 02:29 PM [dance]
:goodjob: cool
Civanator Aug 17, 2002, 02:32 PM yaay!!
Civanator Aug 17, 2002, 04:55 PM got musket sounds, they might help.
i recommend small_1 for the firing sound.
Kestrel18 Aug 19, 2002, 06:54 PM Here is a Civilopedia descriptoion for the Colonial Musketman, intermediate between Musketman and Rifleman, (which I have called the Infantryman) if anyone wants it.
#PRTO_Infantryman
^
^
^[Infantrymen] are powerful defenders.
#DESC_PRTO_Infantryman
^
^Military strategists, most notably Prince Maurice of Nassau, a great Dutch military teacher, developed drill - the preparation for war by prescribed movements and formations - to increase efficiency.
^
^The invention of the bayonet in 1670 gave infantries little reason to keep pikemen, and infantry units employed muskets and bayonet exclusively from then on. The Bayonet is recognized by many as being one of the decisive weapons of the 2nd millennium. In the 18th century when muskets were lighter and easier to load, bayonets were universally placed on the ends of the barrel and the importance of the pikemen diminished.
^
^Smaller tactical groups of infantrymen facilitated quicker rate of group fire with minimal mutual interference. Lines dropped from 8 to 10 in the 17th century to 2 to 3 at the end of the 18th century. With the advent of more modern infanry drills Infantry ceased to use a long line formation because it held the risk that enemy cavalry might attack the flanks or rear and "roll up the line". The hollow square was adopted because it could repulse a $LINK<cavalry=PRTO_Cavalry> attack from any direction. A formation of resolute advancing infantry, bayonets drawn, screaming their battle cries in the 18th century struck fear in the hearts of the enemy and often caused the opposing ranks to break and run.
^
^The use of the bayonet waned with the advent of more accurate $LINK<rifled arms=PRTO_Rifleman> in the mid 19th century, which were able to pick off advancing infantry from a distance. The bayonet charge was all but eliminated with the appearance of $LINK<Infantry=PRTO_Infantry> with automatic weapons in the 20th century, although they were still issued to troops and were still used in battle (c.f. the Japanese in WW2). Bayonets, albeit much reduced in size from earlier models, remain a part of the Infantry's weaponry up to the present day.
^
^The Infantryman unit is basically the Musketman equipped with Flintlock & Bayonet and drilled in Infantry procedures.
one_man_assault Aug 19, 2002, 08:08 PM nice insight Kestrel I hope DS will use it if he decides to finish the unit
Civanator Aug 19, 2002, 08:21 PM keyword: IF
Kal-el Aug 19, 2002, 08:24 PM whether DS decides to use that pedia entry or not is irrelevant. It is up to you as the end user or the modder to insert the pedia entry.
Civanator Aug 20, 2002, 07:53 AM i wish i could make units, cause i would have finished by now :(
shramj Aug 20, 2002, 10:05 AM nice job guys, looks like we can have a bunch of cool units with adding a little more detail to the existing units. That looks really nice! I will use that unit to replace the musketman for the US. Thanks, Joe
Senoj Aug 20, 2002, 01:44 PM Ah Civinator I see you used my musket sounds. How did you cut the sounds down?
Civanator Aug 20, 2002, 02:07 PM i didn't cut the sounds. Why do you ask?
Civanator Aug 20, 2002, 08:29 PM if i learn how to make a unit i will finish this ;)
Senoj Aug 21, 2002, 01:08 AM They seem a little shorter.
one_man_assault Aug 21, 2002, 07:22 PM It would take to long for me to learn and make a unit :( I dont think I have the endurance to last long nights animating and rendering models to look detailed....especially now since school started.
Dark Sheer Aug 22, 2002, 01:23 PM Sorry guys, I was called for some last minute training at my HQ for 3 days and just got back. :p
Will get to work on these ASAP!

I'll say I'm sorry when the unit is posted.
one_man_assault Aug 23, 2002, 04:08 PM HQ are u in the military of your country Dark Sheer?
Dark Sheer Aug 24, 2002, 07:42 AM Nope, corporate HQ I mean. :D
Anyway, here is a revised animation for Default since the last preview. Changes has been made to make longer musket, add a bayonet, change shoes to lighter color and of course added all those backpacks and water canteen as requested by Kal-El. ;)
kemal69 Aug 24, 2002, 09:22 AM Looking good Dark Sheer, definitely worth waiting for! :)
Jon Shafer Aug 24, 2002, 10:05 AM Definitely. :)
You might want to modify the hair though... I doubt most front-line colonial musketmen wore wigs into battle. ;)
Kal-el Aug 24, 2002, 11:06 AM looks good, DS. :goodjob: now don't go getting my hopes up. ;)
CivGeneral Aug 24, 2002, 11:30 AM Looks great DS.:goodjob:. Let me guess, the Colonial Musketman's jacket is civ colored ;).
Dark Sheer Aug 24, 2002, 12:41 PM Yup, the clothes and hat is Civ colored. I might need to change the shoes into white as the current grey does not match well with the shadows.
I make it grey as technically you can't get white as the pants is greyish even though its really white (light and shadow thingy). Looks like you can't have everything and the shoe will have to be white. :(
And of course the background of the preview is pinkish on purpose or else you won't be able to see the light color musket barrel. :D
Civanator Aug 24, 2002, 06:36 PM yaay. Yah good thing the whole coat and hat are civ colored.
one_man_assault Aug 24, 2002, 07:22 PM :goodjob: awsome job DS Im really looking forward to its completion
Civanator Aug 25, 2002, 01:07 PM DS almost done? I see you are here.
Dark Sheer Aug 25, 2002, 01:29 PM Almost done? Nah, I prefer to take it one step at a time. ;)
I am working on fortification which is not as simple as copy and paste from any current animation as I need to rotate a certain part of the hand and then tidy up the animation which is actually taking alot of time to get the animation to look good. :)
Civanator Aug 25, 2002, 01:37 PM oh. dang! ohwell hope you finish soon.
hzm Aug 25, 2002, 03:50 PM Originally posted by Dark Sheer

The hat? You mean its lining?
Dark Sheer Aug 26, 2002, 06:22 AM I have decided to change the fortify animation since the early preview and so here is the first direction which took me 2 hours! :p
Most likely I will try to do a few directions a day as I do not have 8 hours a day on animation. ;)
Colonel Kraken Aug 26, 2002, 08:16 AM Oh WOW. I simply cannot wait until this unit is finished. This one, above all others, is sorely needed in Civ3. Thanks for your committment and keep up all the good work. :goodjob:

Dark Sheer Aug 30, 2002, 07:06 AM The work is progressing nicely. I am now halfway through fortify. ;) Here is another preview of fortify in another direction. :D

Dark Sheer Sep 05, 2002, 05:47 AM As I was sick for a few days, this project moves a little slow for the moment. :(
However, I am now back on it and here is the first preview for Attack in SW direction. :)
one_man_assault Sep 05, 2002, 05:52 AM nice....Im betting that the green fuss comming out of the musket was a pitiful attempt of my moniter displaying your buitiful smoke rendering :)

Senoj Sep 07, 2002, 09:17 AM Patience is a virtue civanator. Wait. Rather have a top notch unit rather then a sloppy hurried unit!! Wouldn't you??? :crazyeye:
one_man_assault Sep 07, 2002, 12:04 PM hmmmmm Ive been waiting for this a while and it seems that its near finished so what can a week or two do?
Civanator Sep 07, 2002, 03:32 PM hmm... a week or two can...........
-Make me rip hair off my head (I'm only
-Go crazy and bash my head through a wall
-Throw the computer out the window
-Close my hand accidentally in the refridgerator
-Fall asleep in school thinking about how to use the unit
-Fall off my chair multiple times from being so anxious
-say etc., etc., etc., etc., alot in this post.
is that good enough for yah/ ;) :p
Dark Sheer Sep 08, 2002, 03:40 AM Alright, alright, here is another Preview. ;)
I have completed Default, Fortify, AttackA and now working halfway through Death. So here is a preview of Death. Notice that I have not recolor the hair and shoes yet. :)
Anyway, I hope to finish the Death sequence today then work on Run and wrap up the project by tomorrow. :D
