View Full Version : Let's just make a new Wiki.
Meserach Jan 17, 2008, 06:27 AM The old wiki is down and still hasn't come back up. Much of the information on it is now inaccurate anyway since Shadow has been released, and it's taking ages to get the thing back up.
Why don't we just start a new one? Surely someone can host it?
Taels Jan 17, 2008, 11:26 AM Does anyone have recent backups?
I do hope to provide wiki features in an online civilopedia (http://phrasr.com/ffh/pedia.php). My goal is to import XML files, edit online, and export files for use in the game.

That's a great website Taels.
Bringa Jan 20, 2008, 08:53 PM That would be a great approach, Taels. I THINK (not sure) xanaqui42 has a semi-recent backup of the ffh2 parts of the wiki. I could run it on my server no problem, I've set up plenty of wikis before (mediawikis too, so we wouldn't even have to change to a different wiki).
xilr Jan 20, 2008, 11:11 PM Well, this isnt exactly a backup.... but:
www.archive.org
Its a "internet" time-machine. Punch in the Civ4 FFH Wikipedia's URL and you'll find various "Backups" of it. Some of the things in the wiki are functional, some of the things are not.
Its not perfect. But if someone wanted to rebuild it, a lot of information is still there.
kcwong Jan 21, 2008, 03:59 AM Someone has already set it up in Wikia:
http://fallfromheaven.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
But it's very lacking in content. Maybe we can check the data from the old wiki, update them and import?
calmon Jan 21, 2008, 05:34 AM What happened to the old Wiki?
Eldric IV Jan 22, 2008, 01:03 AM The hosting server crashed or something like that and the last backup was pretty old.

What are we waiting for? Start hitting ctrl-c and ctrl-v! :D

Well, I was waiting for someone more familiar with the wiki software to directly import the data. And that we need to rewrite out-dated entries first? :)
jimi12 Jan 22, 2008, 04:03 PM i setup that wikia site but that is about as much as i know how to do. dont feel like you need permission to update.

Well, unless the data can be imported/exported without the wiki database actually working, I'm in favor of the manual method.
jan030 Jan 24, 2008, 02:56 AM Before everyone puts to much energy in this project take a look at this http://phrasr.com/ffh/pedia.php Perhaps helping with this one is more helpfull? I think two is a bit to much, there will probably be some contradictions....;-)

It's very cool, but it isn't editable like a wiki is (at least, that I can see). So contributions would have to be emailed in or whatever, and the whole thing would be much slower. Wiki is a far better format for collaboration.
Taels Jan 24, 2008, 09:27 AM I plan to make it editable, actually. In fact, I'd hoped to add some of the old wiki pages today.

I tried it and i cant say its slow. just like a normal webpage. Taels did a really good job there!!! But hey, wiki or otherwise, info is info and always good for playing tips :goodjob:
Just check eachother for contradiction. A schisma would be nonsens ofcourse.....
Meserach Jan 26, 2008, 07:02 PM I tried it and i cant say its slow.
Slow to create and edit an collaborate on, not slow to read.
If however, as above, it's made editable by the general public in a wiki-like fashion, then this is a good basis to work from.
xienwolf Jan 26, 2008, 07:42 PM Well, remember he is having it compile data straight from the XML, so it isn't quite as slow as it would be for a normal Joe like me to go piece-by-piece popping up information.
Not sure how the XML upload will interface with the Wiki atmosphere. Should be interesting. Maybe just have a wiki-commentary, and a static XML-based info screen?
Taels Jan 26, 2008, 08:45 PM I'd planned to transform the Civilopedia text (the stories, strategy, and text descriptions) into a wiki (and back into a Civilopedia), with a static display for the other fields (cost, strength, requirements, effects, etc).
xienwolf Jan 26, 2008, 11:02 PM That makes sense. Out of curiosity, will the export function be a link that packages up the current (as of when you click) information into an XML file, or will it be just a link to one that is periodically updated?
Sounded at first like it would be difficult to have the first option, but I think that it might be just the one file in the Text folder, so maybe not so very difficult after all.
Taels Jan 26, 2008, 11:26 PM Exactly right - I only plan to export CIV4GameText_FFH2.xml. At least in the first version...
And I'll probably generate a new XML file each time it's requested.
But I'll be busy at my day job for the next few weeks, so these features aren't likely to be ready until the end of Feb.

Yeah I thaught you meant that...after i posted.....
Mason11987 Jan 31, 2008, 01:34 PM So I made a topic regarding a general civ wiki. I plan to make it perfectly viable to have info on everything regarding Fall from Heaven (as well as any other mod) and vanilla/warlords/bts as well as modding documentation and tips as well.
I'm going to get it set up with the a current wiki that already exists. I was hoping the FFH people could help push the wiki by setting up info on FFH (one of my favorite mods):
Mason11987 Feb 01, 2008, 02:03 AM So here is the category specifically for FfH.
http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Fall_from_Heaven
I tried to create a simple categorization scheme that would work for this, but of course I could set up anything else you like. You can just post here about it, or on the talk page for the category:
http://civilization.wikia.com/index.php?title=Category_talk:Fall_from_Heaven&action=edit
or for the article itself:
http://civilization.wikia.com/index.php?title=Talk:Fall_from_Heaven&action=edit
