Are they from different sources such as local retailer and direct download? The patches apparently differ depending on the originals' sources.
BTS tries to patch your vanilla and maybe warlords too (it's been a while). Have you attempted the BTS install with vanilla and warlords fully patched?

no, both are store bought.

and i thought that gold came with all the patches.

i dunt know if it matters but, i can get online with warlords and vanilla without having to download anything which i think means that its fully patched, if not where can i get the patches?

I am having this same problem.

I am re-installing Civ IV onto a computer that used to run it.

I installed CIV 4 (original) to the F: drive. All is okay. I skipped installing Warlords as BTS is supposed to have all of the Warlords stuff in it (right?).

When I try to install BTS, I get the same patch failed to install as mentioned above.

I didn't install any other patches or changes. I assumed the BTS disk would have everything necessary to take a vanilla, unpatched CIV 4 up to BTS in one operation.

BtS tries to install the 1.74 patch onto Vanilla. The problem is that this seems to fail sometimes when Vanilla does not have the 1.61 patch installed beforehand...

Guys I had the same problem here's what you do go to my old thread for my real I have the link on there. It's something like issue with patch...but you need to go to the 2k website and download a patch from them first and then try to instal the game. there are other patches that you try and they will say things like "can not instal this version of patch" just keep going till you find the right one or find my old post :D

Heres all of the thigns they said to do

"Can you try installing Beyond the Sword while the system is booted into safe-mode with networking? This will rule out any program conflictions within the computer itself."

"Please could you go into Civ IV, and have a look in the options, There will be an "About this Build""

after i showed

"The game is fully patched. Please try uninstalling civiv and then installing them both straight after each other"

Gee, not like i hadnt tried that before

"
Can you try the following:

Msconfig.

- Click on the start menu
- Click on run
- Type in the following MSCONFIG
- Click on the startup tab
- Deselect all the tick boxes
- Click on apply and then close
- Restart your computer
- When your computer starts up again, please ignore any messages from msconfig (do not close these)
- Try installing the game"

why would manually installing work if the computer automatically installing it doesn't? I have this same problem.
