So it begins!

The year is 2160 BCE. A new timeline has been chosen for dating, as a new world has been created in the ashes of the old, to count down from where the old counted up, and then to begin again.

In 2012 CE, the civilized world was destroyed by its own creations: weapons so powerful as to wipe out all traces of modernity, whose designs fortunately have been forgotten now. For decades, Mankind held on by a thread underground as radiation kept its iron grip on the surface. Then, in 2120 the dying embers of the once great empires came together in a show of peace and transcendence, to renounce their previous bellicose ways and to push forward with a project to colonize a nearby planet, called Rhea, as life on Earth was no longer tenable.

In 2160 their ship reached this new world, only to crash on entry. A few survived the accident, but the knowledge passed down to them was lost. What little they remembered was stitched together and used in making a new start, effectively from the bronze age, full of hope for the future; this world was to be a testament to human ingenuity, perseverance, and the virtues of Man.

Unfortunately, as these new pioneers found out, among those things lost in the accident were that of universal understanding and peace.

After years of living in small niches in the Earth's crust, these settlers saw the first sunrise seen by any eyes in over a century. Along with it came what many men must have seen thousands of years before. Lush forests and jungles covered the landscape, and the vast expanses of mountain ranges, rivers, and oceans dominated their view.

But in those dim minutes before the sun rose again, they also saw what men had seen for all of time: a horizon full of fear and enemies. An uncertain future, and the drawing of lines. Here again were the old games, here again were the ancient struggles of empires. Here again was humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

That brief pause was but a fleeting glimpse of a world far away, no longer within reach. It would be thousands of years before their primitive structures would reach the heavens again. In the meantime, there was always that old game to be played, that Great Game.

Now down to business.

The British Empire has been founded... again. Long live the still living Queen (she just never quite gives up)!

Alongside it is the American Empire, the great Anglo-American alliance renewed. But there is another American faction somewhere out there, which clings strongly to New Deal values, may it spend itself out of existence! Perhaps one or the other should change their names so we don't get confused... ;)

We have heard that this faction is more "modern", preferring the friendship of the Chinese over those of the English. Truly, it is a case of the old school beliefs of racial kinship and fundamental liberty versus the new school beliefs of quasi-socialist state control and international economic integration.

We will fight to death for our freedom and historic loyalties. We think you traitors to your own people, who must be freed from their uncaring, outsourcing masters. But for now, we extend the blolive branch (the closest thing to an olive branch we could find here) of peace. There is much distance between us, and many foes therein, and little reason for direct conflict any time soon.

So, on the slightly more arid and hotter banks of the new Thames and the coast of what we like to call the New Atlantic, London was founded, to be a beacon unto this brave and dangerous world.

We have even already found friends in the small village of Blackpool, who have decided to join us, and have gifted us their great fortune of 57 gold pieces! You must all now truly tremble in fear of our growing might...

Well, we need to get Ulfang up and running first (he's having compatibility issues after patching BTS). We've been going a little slow these last couple turns, so I'd prefer it if Ulfang, when possible, would take over or your wife, whichever.

I'll sent the turn on for now then. I've been trying to find a way if fixing it without re-installing but the info from the forums I'm getting isn't great. I managed to find (with help) a thread or two and replaced the problem .dll with an older one but it didn't make a difference. Seems like I may not only have to re-install but have two versions of the game in order to pay both PBEM's which isn't really what I want.

Update: Sent my turn to Port. May have found a fix that doesn't involved duel installations. Will try it tonight.

It's now fixed and I've processed my turn. Not sure if Port has alos done one but am sending mine to DNK who can ignore it if he's already received one. I know how to fix it if there are future problems so there should be no more delays on my part.

Okay, so this is somewhat funny. I messed up my assets trying to fix Ulfang's assets by testing out new game files. So I need to repatch if not reinstall my game. I'll try to get things working quickly, but my internet connection is slowing to a halt right now.

We'll get the next turn finished within a week, I swear :)

I'm such a trouble maker :) Sorry about that. Be sure to delete the .dll before repatching. When I re-installed the patch initially I didn't thinking it would just overwrite the file but it didn't work until I deleted the .dll prior to patching. I have backups now in case it happens again :)

I was intending on writing up an end-of-week summary like the OP but, A. the summary would be "we've walked around a lot and our feet are tired", B. we haven't really played much in the last week, and C.... I don't know, I'll do one next week once we get a few more turns in and find something interesting.

You guys might want to write a few words on your experience. How is that fog busting going? Finding some nice spots, eh? Maybe an AI or two? Or do you prize your secrecy too much? We'll find you soon enough, be sure of that.:sniper: :run:

In other threads most people don't share too much until we've actually met. Along the lines, if we don't know iach other in the game, then we don't know each other in this thread.

I tend to follow that. Once I meet the US-China contingent, I'll show them my big stick. Oh wait, that was a different leader. Sorry.

Guys something wierd has happened!? I loaded my game as per usual and had no manual moves to make so it goes straight to press enter to edn turn, I do that and a box pops up asking for DNK's password!? It doesn't save my ended turn as ususal? Any ideas?

Wasn't sure how many use them on civfanatics as they can be handy for MP/PBEM games. I know a few Civ'ers that use it and they can be handy as you can send people messages when they are playing a game and they don't have to minimize the game. Anyhow it doesn't matter was just pointing it out in case anyone did use the programs. :)

Is there any way we could pick the pace up a bit? We're regularly spending 3 days or so per turn right now. I'd like to get it down to 1.5 days/turn, if not less (I've been averaging probably .75 days/turn in another game). I keep forgetting all my strategies!

I mean, it's taking us 3 days or so in the early, early game. What do we all have 2-3 cities and a few odd units to deal with (I hope)? What happens when we're in the industrial age with dozens of units and cities and complex strategies and diplomatic situations to consider each turn?

Yes agreed. I do sometimes take a day or two to process the turns but I think in some cases it's because this game is quite slow paced with receiving turns and when you don't get one for a day or two you tend to respond in kind :) I'll process mine faster as of now. I received the latest turn yesterday. Processing now.

Yea i gave up on that ages ago. I'm in one other PBEM whic is pretty slow but it does have 18 players ;) And also in a Pitboss game where there's a big issue with people making double moves at the moment and the forums are full of people flaming each other. The game keeps going up and down while they revert to previous turns etc.

The true meaning of the holiday is a solemn affair as we remember the people who died for our country. To preserve our freedom, regardless of the perceived or real threat.

I'd like to take this moment to remember the men, women, children and even non-military citizens that has fought for their and other's freedom across the globe.

Personally both my grandfathers fought in WWII, landing on Omaha Beach. My father as in the US army throughout the Veitnam war. Luckily for me, never deployed there.

And a thank you to the servicemen and women across the globe to uphold the freedoms we have through their sacrifices.

I remember. Thank you.

I tend to play late at night for the mos part and manage to fity 4-5 hrs a night in although I don't need much sleep lol. I tend to sleep for just 4-5 hrs.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun. Lots of shooing, burning stuff, four-wheeling, etc. BTW, it's the wilds of Colorado. We were actually out in divide.

I have the latest turn but not sure when i can process it. Sometime tonight I hope. I was rushed to hospital this morning with terrible stomach pains and am on painkillers at the moment (food poisoning I think?) but haven't access the computer all day (am on the laptop at the moment which doesn't have Civ on it). I'll process it as soon as I can.

Nothing to do with the M$ windows update was it?? ;) I couldn't get access with my firewall on and took me a while to work out that it was because of the latest patch which didn't work well with Zonealarm. Typical that. should have been my first thought .... "No internet access?? Microsoft must have released a new patch!" :lol:

I will probably be out of town starting around the 24th, and probably won't be back until somewhere around the 7th. I will have very limited internet access during that time, if I end up going.

Nope. Did the same as you dropped the security setting down. I spent 5 hrs doing a virus scan before i worked it out. I realised it was the firewall that was causing problems but couldn't find what it was. After i'd done the scan i did what i should have done straight away. Did a search in a browser for zone alarm connection problems and found a few threads all saying that the latest update had caused problems with the free version of Zone alarm and the only solution was to either uninstall the windows patch or drop the security settings down. I have auto updates on so can't even remember what patch it was lol.
