View Full Version : I can't install Civ4 Gold Edition
Chriskopaka Jan 21, 2008, 12:03 PM Hi, I can't install the Civ4 Gold Edition and it is causing me quite a bit of frustration. So, here is the problem:
I follow the instrustions on how to install and everything runs smoothly until about half way through the installation with the third disc. It stops at the point with Leaderheads and Elizabeth (I can't remember the exact combination) and after stalling there for a minute or two I get this message:
Feature: Default Feature
Component: Civ4Component
File: E:\data 4.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
I don't believe this is a common problem, as I have looked through regular installation problems and haven't found anything to help me with this specifically. And I use Windows Vista, that might be important. Overall, my computer is new, powerful, and should be able to handle this game.
Any advice on how to proceed would be a tremendous help.
Light-Giver Jan 21, 2008, 06:44 PM some games need to be modified to work on vista like civ 3, but i didnt have that problume with civ 4, but then again i just have the basic edition and i never downloaded civ 3 onto a vista (but my friend who borrowed it from me has) i will ask him tomarrow how he did it, but right now its about 7:30 and its to late to pay him a visit.
I bet though a cyclic redundancy check means that the file is corrupt and it is reading the same line over and over,1 time i civ 3 stoped working for me, i took it out blown on it and wiped it off with a clean cotton and it was able to read again, try cleaning the disk or wipeing it off and try again it may help.
ori Jan 22, 2008, 10:20 AM Welcome to Civfanatics :band:
try copying the whole content of the dvd/cd(s) to your harddrive and run the install from there. The cyclic redundancy check means that either the disc or the drive don't work properly (at least not properly with vista - and I'd suspect the drive)...
Chriskopaka Jan 24, 2008, 04:49 PM Thanks, I will try all of your suggestions on Friday. From there I will give you an update.
addsfinestsg1 Oct 14, 2008, 09:56 AM i just bought a new laptop with vista and am having the same problem. did u ever get it working?
ori Oct 14, 2008, 10:09 AM welcome to cfc :band:
what is your exact problem?
addsfinestsg1 Oct 14, 2008, 03:17 PM well i start t instll it and about halfway through it it pops up with an error message the one the first guy up there posted and the only option is to click ok so i do that and it closes out of it all. ive been trying it for like 2 days with no luck
ori Oct 14, 2008, 03:23 PM that message points to one of two things:
1) your disc is either dirty or scratched - try cleaning it with a soft dry cloth
2) your cd/dvd drive does not work properly - are you sure all drivers/firmware are uptodate?
addsfinestsg1 Oct 14, 2008, 03:26 PM yea i cleaned the disc, an dits not scratched an dits brand new computer just got it a week ago
ori Oct 14, 2008, 03:32 PM brand new computer does not mean that the drivers and firmware are updated - you should check on the website of your computer manufacturer if there are any updates for your cd/dvd drive. Vista still has some drives that have no properly updated drivers - but sometimes those are just very new.
also try copying all contents of all discs to a folder on your computer and run the install from there...
