I got just plain ol' civ 4 and ive been playing small continents maps with ai and i have difficulty on default and I CANT WIN!? I have been playing a couple days strait and I just constantly get my noob ass pwnzered no matter what I do i make sure my citys are happy and healthy but stupid focking(from meet the fockers) russian paul or whatever the hell his name is keeps building near me forces me to give him things and then I give him everything he wants and he declares war with me I kick his ass using the last demo to use gold to buy a bunch of spear dudes an catapults but it seems like a neverending war fought him for 5 hours bak n forth bak n forth and all the other players got laser beems and nuclear rocket launchers the size of toothpiks and I just discovered sliced bread! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD why do you hate me!!!
even in the begining of the game civs are way ore advanced then me and I cant watch a replay to try to duplicate what there doing... Is there a video anywhere showing a whole game so I have something to base my strategy off of because ron pauls strategy and george w bushs strategy dont work....
Thank you fellow civ goers

At what level are you playing? At lower levels, if the AI beats you it probably means that you need to work on building your empire, independent of what the AI is doing.

It might help if you would post some screenshots, showing how you placed your cities and what you are building.

I'm surprised... personally I've found the George W Bush strategy to be very effective.

Edit: I haven't tried the Ron Paul strategy, though.

Okay. Try these steps:
1) Read the articles in the War Academy. Everyone pertaining to Vanilla Civ4 (i.e, w/o expansions).

2) Patch Civ4 to version 1.74 (Main Menu, Advanced, Check for Updates)

3) Post a Save game, and start a thread with screenshots. Use the "Prnt Screen" button on the keyboard, then enter My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Screenshots to access them. Upload the pictures onto Photobucket or a similar website, then use the [IMG] tags (under the thumbnails) to have them on a post here.

4) Wait for comments. And speaking for myself and much of the community, try to make your posts as coherent as possible. No offense, but it doesn't help when we see something like the original post.:)

Also, to toggle a Golden Age: For the first Golden Age (GA), you need two different Great People. Similarly, for the second, you need 3, for the third you need 4, etc. Imhotep and Archimedes both are Great Engineers. The abilities of the the Great People are as follows:

All Great People can discover or contribute research to a tech (the lightbulb icon), or join a city as a "super specialist".
Great Engineers can "rush" any building a city is producing to within one turn of completion. This is usually used for Wonders, since those have extra benefits and require more time to complete.
Great Artists can create "Great Works" which add a certain amount of culture to a city depending on Game Speed. Stockpiling these is usually a good way to go about a Cultural Victory.
Great Scientists can build an Academy in a city, which increases the city's research output by 50%.
Great Merchants can go on "Trade Missions" to foreign cities (you need an Open Borders Agreement first), and get some gold. The amount of gold received increases based on the city's distance from your capital and its commerce.
Great Prophets can build the "Holy Shrine" of any religion in that holy city. It brings in +1 gold per turn (GPT) for each city with that religion present in it.
The Warlords Expansion Pack added the Great General. The Great General can build a Military Academy (after Military Tradition is discovered) in a city, increasing military production by 50%, join a city as a Great Military Instructor, giving all units out of the city an extra 2 XP, or join a stack of units as a Warlord tied to a unit in the stack, giving the Warlord unit new promotions and splitting 20 XP among all units in the stack.
The Beyond the Sword Expansion pack added the Great Spy. The Great Spy can infiltrate an enemy city, giving an espionage boost (a BTS only system, so you can ignore it) against that enemy Civ.

If you want help from the fine folk here at Civfanatics, it will help tremendously if you are polite, courteous, and patient. People aren't going to drop everything just to aid you the moment you need help, so throwing petulant tantrums is a poor method to solicit constructive feedback.

I'll check out your savegame if I have time.

Maybe a small tip, go to options and click "workers leave old improvements". I would strongly advise against ever automating workers, but if you would automate them .. they'll leave your stuff alone. ;)

As for demogames, I doubt anyone got an actual vid but there's plenty of informative threads around.

Is that the one where you completely mess up and are hated by all other civs? I tried it, but I couldn't quite pull it off. :mischief:

NEVER AUTOMATE WORKERS!*

*Unless late in the modern era where the game is basically over by then.

Also, just a word of advice: try making your explanations clear. I really have no idea what the problem is with your games because you just say "im dieing" and similar explanations. If you want to post a screenshot, just hit print screen + shift and you can name the screenshot so you can go in the civ folder and upload it on imageshack or whatever. :)

some basic stuff :
0) patch the game. everyone here is playing 1.74, so don't come with 1.0 ;).
1) cIV is a strategy game. Without strategy you won't win (not even at settler).
2) default difficulty? Don't know what that is. Play the tutorial instead. I know it's boring, but at least you'll understand a few basic things.
If you're not doing good in your current game, and if you're just beginning to understand the game, just drop the game and start another, one or 2 levels below (after the tutorial).
3) cIV is a complex game. If you're familiar with previous versions, it's doable to go ahead and play. If you're not, you really have things to learn before expecting to cruise through games.
Learning exercices :
- play the tutorial
- read the manual
- come here and read some beginner's guides (check the war academy for good articles. Of course none are as good as mine :p, but a few are pretty useful.)
- start a low level game. save. Give yourself a goal (let's say space victory). Try to see what you need to get there (there are articles here for almost everything, including space races). Play the first 100 turns, and see if you're making progress in the right direction. Recheck your goals.
If you're not satisfied, load the initial save, and play differently.
Rinse and repeat, until you are pleased.
Save.
Play the next 50/100 turns.
...
The reloading thing is not allowed in competive games of course, but it's pretty useful for learning.
It allows you to try out a few things you may have read here.

Don't listen to that don't automate crowd.
I made the leap to Monarch using automated workers. (but the advice to click "workers leave old improvements and workers don't chop" is sound).
Experiment and lose. Find your own way- more fun.

what you describe does not have anything to do with strategy!
It's just wood pushing (loose translation from a french chess term).

What victory do you pursue?
What did you do to get nearer to the goal, in terms of land, diplomacy and techs?

Yes my strategy is obviously not working as ive never won a game since i got civ. I turned time off so i can just play for a long time and put epic on I want to win my conquest culture or space watever the wind blows me but the wind keeps blowing me into peter the evil dictator. My strategy is obviously broken im doing something wrong

Okay since my problem seems to be so engrossed with my suckingness let me ask a couple simple questions until someone can figure out my problem
im in the year 1700 im about to get musket men researched in a couple research things left but its like impossible for me to do it with peter at war wth me what troops should i be building or mass prpoducing net time so im more prepared i have like a million catapults elefant men spearmen dyudes and nothing i cant stop him

I can't seriously believe that any improvement in your game is down to automating workers. Are you seriously suggesting that the AI manages workers better than you do?

Understanding what to put where, and when to put it is hugely advantageous to improving play. So I would strongly recommend that any new player leave worker automation well alone.

The reason Archimedes and Imhotep cannot start a golden age is that they are of the same type of greatperson (engineers)

If i was in that situation I would just start over and dont give everything techs, maps, gold, etc. to anyone that asks check everyones power before doing that because 99% of the time they are bluffing you to get ahead in techs ex:monty and mongols are the worst at this and never give japan anything he will never be happy. just look at the power and if your 1st in power noone will declare war on you all game, as long as your first. So think before you give out freebies. Peter is pretty much easy unless he has the cossacks . And to get the most power in the start of the game just build war elephants, macemen , and crossbowmen. Hope this helps later.....

I don't post much, but here's my two cents.

Slow down. Think about every turn. Don't just click the next turn button 5 times so the wonder in your capital will be finished. Every turn counts. You shouldn't be able to determine your end game scenario for a good many turns. You need to focus on what's happening right now. Don't let yourself get locked-in to a particular path to victory. That will ruin your game very quickly. You need to be able to adapt. You cannot go into a game with a specific game plan or with the preconception that you're going to dominate the game from day 1. It's okay if you're behind on score in 400 AD, as long as you have a plan that you've made where you take into consideration what you have to work with and what you're going to have to work against.

And don't automate workers for god's sake.

P.S.

I started playing on settler and I'm now on Emperor difficulty and I'm winning the majority of my games thanks to this board.
