My other muslim set was too obviously just late ottoman, and i would like this one to be more of a generic islamic one.

Not exactly, although it is one of the same design more or less :) I changed some parts of it so that they would show more in this small size (for example the dome of the rock has 7 windows for each wall, and this has only three).

I do not like the houses. Any idea about how i could liven them up a bit?
Finding pics of medieval middle-eastern houses is hard.

Aren't many of the houses that are currently being used today over there originally built hundreds or thousands of years ago? Couldn't you just design them as such then?
