View Full Version : Sword of Geddon's unit creation preview thread
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 06:54 AM Its been awile since I've made a unit, but with the arrival of Sandris the Awesome i've decided to get back into the game. Here's a preview of my first unit I want to update since I was not happy with the first version, my Mesoamerican "Cataphract". Which I hereby rename the Mesoamerican Heavy Horseman, intended as an upgrade from Shiro's great Mesoamerican Horseman unit:

Virote_Considon Jan 26, 2008, 07:05 AM Looking good!
I think the clothing you chose was definitely a good call!
Quinzy Jan 26, 2008, 09:37 AM Brilliant! Have him lean forward more, and holding on to imaginary reins with his free hand :D
And maype position the spear so he can attack overhand?
Partizanac Jan 26, 2008, 10:25 AM make his free hand hold the horse's hair :D
:goodjob:
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 01:40 PM How is this?

It looks nice, but I think it should be a little more.

Quinzy Jan 26, 2008, 02:09 PM As in, leaning in a little more, and gripping to the fur tightly :)
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 02:40 PM alright i got it. Animating default pose now...
Blue Monkey Jan 26, 2008, 02:57 PM Maybe the horse's barding could use a "jaguar" texture, such as one of the free ones available at Renderosity:
Very Simple Furs--The Yellows (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=48538)
Spotted fur (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=48153)
Seamless Fur Texture Tiles (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=40775)
Animal Print Textures (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=41818)
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 03:05 PM I was going to use Utah's horse headcover but I wasn't sure how to get it to work, so I skiped out on using it.
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 06:56 PM Just to let everyone know after this horseman I will be working on some units for the Native American mod...namely desert warriors.
Hey Blue do you have any opinions on what unit I should make first my comrade?
Blue Monkey Jan 26, 2008, 11:48 PM An Apache-style style rifleman could actually be used by the Pueblo, Hopi, & Navajo as well.
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 26, 2008, 11:55 PM Alright then I'll make that next...
Progress report: I've completed the default and fortify on this horseman, and I've completed the animation of the attack, only need to render it. After that I have the death to do.....
Quinzy Jan 27, 2008, 12:15 PM Make a preview of the attack so we can halp you make it perfect? :D
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 28, 2008, 03:27 PM I didn't like the way my horseman was turning out so I decided I'll save him for later once I get better with unit making..for now I'm going to work on a Zulu Musketman.
Quinzy Jan 28, 2008, 04:27 PM :D okay mate! Take your time :)
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 30, 2008, 03:36 PM Heres a spearman I'm working on:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/MesoamericanSpearmanPreview.jpg
Stormrage Jan 30, 2008, 03:47 PM An ineresting outfit! Dunno what the hell he is tho :)
Stormrage Jan 30, 2008, 03:47 PM nnnnooooo.. doublepost.
Blue Monkey Jan 30, 2008, 04:21 PM An ineresting outfit! Dunno what the hell he is tho :)Obviously the Aztec to English translation is "blue-wearing spear guy with that thingumabob on his head".:p
Quinzy Jan 30, 2008, 04:59 PM If you want any ideas on what units to make for mesoamerica, and what they should look like, I can supply you with some stuff :)
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 30, 2008, 06:19 PM I am leaning towards calling it a Coatyl Warrior, he'll probably be replacing the Pikeman in my Heart of Destiny mod. I'm going to make another, historical looking spearman as well. Quinzy do you still have those textures for the crown, cape and shield you used for the mayan warrior by any chance? If not I could use some help making some textures, I'd be most appreciative.
Quinzy Jan 31, 2008, 10:42 AM The crown just used standard blues :)

Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 31, 2008, 10:48 AM Thankyou Quinzy. I'll be sure to credit u when I get back to work on that horseman guy. I'm almost done with my spearman just the death and run to go btw.
Quinzy Jan 31, 2008, 10:52 AM Awesome! Any previews of the animations? :D
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 31, 2008, 10:58 AM I'm using Shiro's old animations he gave me. So check out one of his spearman, the animations are exactly the same...;)
Quinzy Jan 31, 2008, 11:02 AM :D Cool cool! I'll sure do that!
Make sure there's no skin poking through his clothes!
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 09, 2008, 07:25 PM I'm working on an Incan Horseman now. I will/am using animations supplied by Sandris with this horseman. So the animations are not my work but his.
Preview coming shortly, as I am in the middle of rendering the attack animation.(I've already rendered the default and fortify.)
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 09, 2008, 09:33 PM Heres a preview of the Incan Horseman.

ShiroKobbure Apr 09, 2008, 11:41 PM You have to fix the kilt, and make his skin much more brown. Maybe give him some armor. And something to stay on the horse.
But I will use this for the Inca once it is finished
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 12:06 AM Thankyou Shiro good advice. The skin is the easy part, as for the Kilt I don't think its ment for a riding prop, because it doesn't bend or twist to allow legs to go threw. So I'll have to start over, with another prop in that area that doesn't have the legs going threw it like that.
I did some practice renders with Sandris animations and they look good. It shouldn't be a problem to rerender with different skincolor and another prop.
ShiroKobbure Apr 10, 2008, 01:36 AM You have to bend it yourself, it should be bend front and out left and right. It will not move with the legs, even if it is conformed.
Gen. Rommel Apr 10, 2008, 05:41 AM You have to bend it yourself, it should be bend front and out left and right. It will not move with the legs, even if it is conformed.
Yeah, there are morphs that you have to play around with to get it right. Just go to the preferences of that figure and you should be able to find them.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 09:43 AM I'd also thought I'd show off where I got my new avatar from(I made it myself actually in poser) here
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/KeeperofTime.jpg
I call the piece Keeper of Time, I might make a leaderhead of of it, maybe change the hair, we will have to talk about this later in another thread but anyways, back to my unit discussion:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/IncanPreview.jpg
How is this?
I couldn't figure out how to morph the kilt btw. Does this work?
ShiroKobbure Apr 10, 2008, 10:16 AM He looks like a visual kei artist
The unit, looks too primitive.
What about giving him a cloth vest

Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 10:30 AM Hows this?:

Micaelus Apr 10, 2008, 10:35 AM I couldn't figure out how to morph the kilt btw.
The morphs are usually under the figure's Hip...But this is looking pretty nice.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 10:43 AM Thankyou Micaelus, I intend on spending alot of time on this guy, to get it right. I want a unit that people use here.
Mithadan Apr 10, 2008, 11:32 AM I like the unit concept. At present, I just randomly give the Incans, Mesoamericans and Brazillians Amazon units for counterfactual stuff like this (but that's a silly approach of mine that will be rectified with newer units like these).
Were Incans really that brown? (I really have no idea, but Shiro's concept art doesn't look very dark.) How about just a bit more "tanned"? ;)
ShiroKobbure Apr 10, 2008, 11:44 AM Should be more brown-red skin tone:

Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 02:31 PM Alright I'll lighten it abit and see what you guys think...I appreciate the imput.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 02:44 PM How about this: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/IncaPreview2.jpg
Quinzy Apr 10, 2008, 02:51 PM Perhaps a saddle-cloth too? :)
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 02:56 PM I can try to get Utah's saddle to work but last time I tried I didn't get very far, but here goes...
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 03:23 PM Heres the preview with the saddle:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/IncanSaddlePreview.jpg
BadKharma Apr 10, 2008, 03:38 PM The skin could still use some red tint to it. Not sure how I feel about the "undies" but at civ scale it may be allright.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 03:42 PM Skin tone is fairly close to this picture: http://www.imagesofanthropology.com/images/Closeup_Andean_flute_player_near_the_Inca_ruins_of _Pisac_Peru_copy.jpg
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 10, 2008, 03:53 PM Goodbye "Undies" lol: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b395/Sword_of_Geddon/IncanSaddlePreview-1.jpg
TopGun Apr 10, 2008, 10:19 PM Much better without them briefs!
Gen. Rommel Apr 11, 2008, 02:48 AM Skin tone is fairly close to this picture: http://www.imagesofanthropology.com/images/Closeup_Andean_flute_player_near_the_Inca_ruins_of _Pisac_Peru_copy.jpg
But its sometimes best to over-exaggerate a bit...which in this case might be better. The current skin tone is too similar to the horse's color, making them kind of converge into each other. I would also recommend a red tone (and don't be too sparse here, try and make a noticeable change to red visible).
And the change from undies to cloth looks CONSIDERABLY better hehe. :goodjob:
I would also recommend a drape for the horse with some vivid artistry. I figure, since the Incans as well as other Meso-Americans used such beautiful artisitic designs for everything else, they would most likely also have done it for their horses. I believe the unit would look very good then and also close to done.
Looking very good!

I will definitely do the last bit with the Incan Knight I want to make, but not for the Horseman. If you could help by finding me some peruvian/incan blanket patterns it would help me, but you don't have to yet.
Bjornlo Apr 11, 2008, 09:36 AM The horse color must be changed to a much darker shade or a much lighter shade. The rider and the horse will look like a weird two headed centaur at civ scale with the current coloration.
I would also suggest a hint more red in the dude.
I am not sure if the saddle adds or detracts. I suspect I would have the bridle and just a blanket if it were me, and delete the saddle.
As for the undies... well it looked ok to me. The skirt is ok too, but it would be better if you used a magnet or two on it to get it to look like it was conforming to the horse.
BadKharma Apr 11, 2008, 09:49 AM Hmmmm that is 3 people suggesting more red to the skin tone now. I think on the blanket with no saddle it would be more appropriate for the earlier horseman.
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/4013/civscaledne2.png
The legs blend perfectly with the color of the horse and as soon as his arms are moved down they will most likely disappear also.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 11, 2008, 10:48 AM Alright maybe change the color of the horse? I'll ask Sandris where he got that blanket prop too. Thanks for the input guys.
Quinzy Apr 11, 2008, 11:15 AM I think it's the saddle prop with the extra bits made invisible.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 11, 2008, 11:23 AM Alright I'll try that thanks Quinzy!
Mithadan Apr 11, 2008, 09:34 PM For what it's worth, I like the skin tone now.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 12, 2008, 07:04 AM Well I decided to keep the skin tone, but change the horse color, and Sandris was kind enough to send me his blanket prop via email. I'll have have a new preview up soon..
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 12, 2008, 03:58 PM Update! I've decided to do two more horsemen for the incans. This guy is going to be a unit that comes in between the horseman and the knight. An advanced horseman if you will. I will make a more primitive horseman afterwards, then a Knight eventually down the road.
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 15, 2008, 12:33 PM Another update....only the run animation remains to be done...
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 15, 2008, 03:12 PM And its posted!
