The Ar 196 was Germany's primary shipboard recon aircraft during WWII. Most large German surface vessels, like the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz and the Battlecruisers Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Admiral Hipper, Prinz Eugen and Lützow were equipped with a catapult-launcher for these seaplanes.

Maybe that's why this is one of my favorite seaplanes. I used to read Tintin comics well into my 20s - and I still have my complete collection (even though it's safely stashed somewhere in my basement).
Mithadan Jan 28, 2008, 04:50 PM Attaboy! I've got the complete collection now myself, but all in Dutch, cuz I bought 'em all in Belgium. Not quite the same as reading them in the original French, but it keeps the language skills from going completely to pot. Plus, they were an easy find, being ubiquitous in that country!
Mmmm...floatplanes, armoured cars, other weapon moments from Tintin. All good.

For the modern extension of the Asterix mod, I already made a fighter jet!
It's even flown by the Celtic Air Force "Asterix" squadron... ;)
