View Full Version : Cultural Border Fix?

I was wondering if anyone ever took a stab at making a fix for cultural borders for the latest version of BtS? Last time I checked no one had made one, and I couldn't find one in the mod components thread.

By "fix", what I mean is a way to take permanent control of the land you conquer (the cultural portion of it) by one means or another, whether it be by units having a new button that grants the user 100% cultural control of the square that was "conquered" or by some other method.

My reason is that it is ridiculously annoying to try to play Civ IV more as a "sim" than an arcade game. I like realism when it comes to war and conquest, what I don't like is taking over enemy cities and having their neighbors obtain more land than I do because of their culture penetrating into the land I just conquered. Not only that, the city will usually revolt in a short time anyway or starve to death, which isn't realistic.

This isn't just a player problem, AI have a hard time maintaining captured cities as well.

The only two fixes I can think of are either the one I mentioned before with the unit, or having a city maintain all of it's culture (maybe slash out 50 or so culture per population because of the conquest) when it is conquered. Otherwise I am uncertain as to how to go about fixing it. Any thoughts?

This is a design feature. Culture is already really weak, but one of the advantages is that you can use it control land, especially the land of cities you have lost. A weak insurance policy, if you will. If it bothers you, dump more of your economy into culture. Also, if I ever update Mylon Mega mod, culture bleeds across borders so you won't have such a hard time taking over new land.

Hmm, I don't really think dumping all of my points into culture will fix this problem. What I'm looking for is an actual change to the game so it's actually realistic.

I mean, you don't see Iran/Turkey/Syria/Saudi Arabia/Jordan/Kuwait gaining a bunch of territory now because Iraq is occupied by coalition forces =/

You don't really understand global politics very well do you? The borders may not have shifted but neighbouring countries have certainly gained alot more influence in the nearby regions than they did before the fall. Iran for example now has a strong influence on the Shiite dominated south. And Turkey probably would have gained influence in the North if it wasn't for their enemies the Kurds gaining control over that area.

Besides, Civ isn't meant to mirror reality, it's a game with different rules than real life. It's all about balance. It would be far too easy to walk away with a domination victory if you were allowed to keep all the culture of a captured city. The way it is now, you need to actually work at it.

That much becomes obvious when you use an artist to sieze control of enemy territory or solidify your borders by building libraries
