Not in any situation in which you'd be stopping to consider whether a spelling was ok. It's on the same level as 'c' '2' and 'gr8'.

I've been doing alot of pushups lately... I was told to concentrate on keeping good form with my body to get the ppush up right, well I'm getting alot of tension in my abdomen. In fact my stomach muscles are getting tired and giving in before my arm muscles go...

Is that bad? Am I doing them wrong?

Yes. You simply needn't strain your abs to maintain pushup posture.

I wouldn't say so, but I'm picky about the written word.

My question: Should fish and chips be made with only haddock or cod, or can any quality white fish suffice? I recently had a very good meal of fish and chips made from pollock, so it got me thinking.

I don't think so, keeping your body aligned will work your trunk muscles. it just means that your arms are much stronger than your abs. I could be wrong though, but if I am it means i do them just as wrong:lol:

Strictly speaking it should only be cod. While haddock has long been common in chippies, if you want to order it you ask for haddock and chips, not fish and chips. Now that we've eaten most of the cod in the sea a bit of pragmatism is doing away with all the strict speaking business though. Pollock is a common replacement for cod and if it isn't perfectly acceptable for fish and chips now it will be soon.

Is it true that you can't tell which direction bass frequencies are coming from? If so, how come? Is it due to the shape of your ears?

I must preface this by saying that I have absolutely no idea.

But, it occurs to me that when you hear bass, your whole body actually feels it, since it travels so well through walls and floors and bodies and the like. So you're hearing the waves vibrating through your body as much as you're hearing them through the air from the original source. You can't detect the source, because as far as your ears are concerned you are the source.

I studied physics but if for some reason the above speculation turns out to be right, the credit has to go to years going clubbing, not anything I picked up in a lecture.

Hmm, well, bass certainly seems to "fill" the room. But I'm not sure if the way we here it is due to that "fullness", or if the feeling of "fullness" is due to the way we hear it. I figured the wavelength of low frequencies is around 5-10m, as opposed to a 50cm-1m of so for middle frequencies, so it bends round the whole body rather than just the ear. Again, total speculation.

Hells yeah... It might be a bit unfair to talk about algebra, being as I use it regularly in my job. But chemistry was useful just to know things like why things rust, what I shouldn't eat when I just wake up, why it's a good idea to wear gloves when cleaning the oven, why I shouldn't leave my guitar by the radiator, why putting salt in the water and leaving the lid on makes water boil faster... etc.

Also, I use terms like "activation energy" (with accompanying graphs) to explain why subscription-based services should target hard-to-get customers.

When I was young (I'm 52) Brit, they'd offer me a choice of Cod or Plaice.
Now I am often offered Rock Salmon which isn't salmon at all, but the flesh
of the dogfish, wolffish or catfish. I've had halibut occasionally.

Yes, any quality white fish will suffice. But not oil rich fish.

To my mind freshness and the type and quality of the cooking oil are all far more important than the particular fish species.

I live in a fishing port in Cornwall which is also a major tourist town.
As you say, cod is always first choice in fish and chips, haddock is second.
Neither fish is common in these waters but pollack is plentiful. I have often
gone on fishing trips from our harbour and regularly caught pollack up to
10lbs. each. Pollack is better filletted and pan fried with butter and herbs.
My favourite fish done this way is mackerel, more flavour and full of very
healthy omega oils. The real delicacies caught around here are sea bass
or turbot which are the most expensive fish served in restaurants.:)

Interesting question.
Where are you from, and how have you heard about the chefs anyway?
Celebrity chefs set up restaurants in Cornwall to take advantage of very
fresh seafood and the thousands of tourists who come here. The best
example of this is Rick Stein who has gourmet restaurants in Padstow,
Newlyn and St. Ives. Some people describe Padstow as "Padstein" because
of all the property he owns there and the effect on local property prices.

Stein has given a boost to my town, Looe, which has the second biggest
fishing fleet in Cornwall. Because they are all only day trawlers, their catch
is often in the London restaurants and European markets the same or the
next day. Rick Stein recommends our fish as the freshest in the U.K..
You are right about the property prices though, but it's not the chefs
who have caused this.
It's the thousands of well-off English tourists who buy cottages as holiday homes
and then only use them for a few weeks of the year. Because of this, prices are
just as high as London, there are fewer homes coming on the market, and the locals
esp. young couples with lower wages have no chance to get on the property ladder.
It is probably the main reason why the English are resented by the Cornish.:)

Is it true that you can't tell which direction bass frequencies are coming from? If so, how come? Is it due to the shape of your ears?

Not true. You have different ways of judging where a sound is coming from. The level difference is the difference in volume between ears, and the time difference is obvious. The distortion caused by the pinna is a little addition to that.
One is more effective at high frequencies, one at low frequencies, but I forget which way round. Although human sound pinpointing isn't very accurate in the best of circumstances, I've never seen anything to suggest that our ability to identify the location of bass is worse.
If it's true it might be to do with vibration, resonance and properties of bass sound in our environment, rather than human biology.

Well the reason I say it is because when I was setting up my parents surround sound system, the instructions said that the sub could be put anywhere in the room (i.e. didn't have to be central) because we can't tell where bass is coming from.

My guess then is that bass reflects off the walls well, perhaps better than high frequencies, which are absorbed, and that the long wavelengths of bass sounds mean that the reflections can start to hit your ears before the wave has finished.
Reflections and interference would interfere with both time difference (reflections themselves) and level difference (interference). HF sound perhaps suffers more level difference normally (which is why deep sounds travel further), and is absorbed more by walls and other obstacles (as well as not refracting as much), meaning that interference through reflection is much less.

Well speed is the issue here. Reversing up a slope would not be an issue except that the rear 2/3 of the car ends up with 6 inch clearence either side, so fast is bad.

Unable to go anything like slow enough up such a large incline without stalling or at the very least bunny-hopping all over the shop. Some degree of clutch-dipping required.

What's the point of a microphone that you place on your head, yet it doesn't have headphones?

What you have there is a recipe for frequent clutch replacements. Find another place to park. Or drive in forward, then go out and put a cone in the road before you back out.

Another question from cappin Dyslexia -

"But" and the placement of commas. A pair of commas denoting a subordiant clause would normally be placed so that the sentence would read if the commaed clause was removed. This doesnt seem to hold with "but".

To quote myself from the Churchill/ Myth thread -

Gentlemen, it's not pretty, but it's a sight better than UKTV Gold. Ten year old re-runs of Eastenders and more Bergerac than you can shake a stick at...

That sentence would read without the commaed clause if the "but" was the other side of the comma, but that would clearly be wird.

Because the different colours (wavelengths) of sunlight are refracted at differing angles by the atmosphere.

The picture shows that during the day the more strongly refracted blue light is most prominent, though at sunset the sky takes on a more reddish hue.

And FWIW (for what it's worth) I think this is a very useful thread. A place to ask a quick question and get a quick answer without cluttering up the board. I've seen similar threads on other boards and they were good.

Lots of little breaks in between whatever it was I was supposed to be doing. Or while I'm relaxing in other ways. Rarely am I ever just browsing CFC, even if it is mostly alongside other things.

Not quite: ionic substances disrupt the crystalline lattice of ice, making it more fluid.
Another question from cappin Dyslexia -

"But" and the placement of commas. A pair of commas denoting a subordiant clause would normally be placed so that the sentence would read if the commaed clause was removed. This doesnt seem to hold with "but".

A subordinate clause separated by commas is just that, but if you want to link your sentences together with other words then you're no longer simply adding subordinate clauses in with commas but using a different structure.

I don't think grit melts the ice. (I'm perfectly fine with being wrong about that.) My understanding was always that sand and such simply helps maintain traction while the ice is still there. Salt raises the melting point, so it actually does melt the ice, but the sand is there to compensate for what the salt can't do.

It means that rather than checking off a candidate already printed on the ballot, you "write in" another one in the space provided.

I'm sure they tally the write-ins. I don't see how legally they couldn't. It's practically certain that they won't threaten the printed candidates, but a write-in is just as valid as a printed candidate.

Usually it's a protest, like when people write-in their cats. Not always, though, as you might support a fringe candidate who didn't make it onto the ballot.

If you're going to leave the ballot blank, why bother going? I think you're allowed to, though. I've left specific items blank, although not a whole ballot.

They do tally write-ins, the state probably includes the most popular write-ins on the tally of past votes somewhere. Massachusetts has their last election results online; apparently the two most popular write-ins on the 2004 Democratic Primary ballot were (if I remember correctly) Al Gore and George W. Bush.

As far as supporting fringe candidates, Alan Keyes was on the Republican ballot in Georgia but not in Massachusetts.

In 1824 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election%2C_1824), no one won a majority of the electoral college, which threw the election into the House of Representatives. No one won the popular vote, either. In the end, John Quincy Adams won and became president, despite the fact that he didn't win even a plurality of either the popular vote, or the electoral college. Andrew Jackson had the last laugh, though. ;)

There are plenty of other cases where a president won only a plurality, and not a majority of the popular vote, but won the election anyway. (Such as Bill Clinton) I'm not aware of any cases at all where one man won an outright majority but lost the election - even Al Gore in 2000 got only 48%.

In addition to that 1824 election, in 1876, 1888, and in 2000, the winner of the popular vote for the Presidency lost the Electoral College vote.

In 1800, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were tied with 73 electoral votes, since one elector cast two votes but could not differentiate who should be President and who should be Vice President. Why do bouncy balls always bounce forward on every second bounce?

If you throw it overhand (the last part of your hand that touches the ball is the top part), then the spin will be clockwise if viewed from the left, and the ball will go back towards the person, who is on the right if you're looking from the left, then, since the spin has been inversed on the first bounce, it will seemingly go forward since on the first bounce it was moving in the opposite than it would have been moving were it on the ground, so it falls pretty straight down, and then the spin is sufficient to propel it forward. This is probably pretty hard to understand, so just observe a ball with markings on it next time you throw it.

Unlikely. Those are the most common causes of recurring nose bleeds, but things such as heart problems, sniffing vile chemicals such as cocaine, acetone or meths, or even just excessive physical effort, can all cause nose bleeds.

So if you work in a paint factory, or you lift heavy weights, or you're overweight but haven't been diagnosed with hypertension, you could be getting nosebleeds because of it.

Something to do with the way the ball compresses I guess, and the grip the distorted rubber has on the ground.

Brighteye
Feb 08, 2008, 03:59 AM
That's because of its bounciness. Bouncy balls tend to grip the ground well and get a lot of traction for the spin, and they, by definition, don't lose much energy in the collision, so the spin isn't lost, but reversed.

Non-bouncy balls lose the spin you put on them much more easily.

Abaddon

An iron? Or are you talking about the creases? Pants are easy. You just place the iron on the pants and that's it. I don't bother. It's not as if anyone cares whether my underwear is ironed or not.

I've noticed a slightly higher than average number of oddities in the bodies of Indian people, such as extreme shortness and tiny physical frames. One unfortunate guy who sits nearby me has an extremely high unnatural sounding voice. According to a friend of the family that went there on business, ridiculously so. But, I have no idea where she went.

One unfortunate guy who sits nearby me has an extremely high unnatural sounding voice.

I seconded that... I have had several Indian guys in my classes whose voices are about an octave higher than my voice--or that of any of the friends--has ever been... Is there a reason for that?

Semi-literal, semi-metaphorical, but more literal. As a whole, NWA is not known for their metaphors in the sense Wu-Tang is, but rather, their "sense of the street."

Something to do with the way the ball compresses I guess, and the grip the distorted rubber has on the ground.

Bouncy ball's surface has a high friction and the ball keeps a lot of its kinetic energy (i.e. bounces well). Those are the key factors in the spin. My physics teacher explained that better to my class some time ago.

Is there anywhere (off the internet) where I could get a big box of bouncy balls? I don't want to feed quarters into machines.

In the discount store near my summer cottage they sold 'em in packages of 50 or so. That was in Finland, but try searching the toys in discount and department stores or just go to a regular toy store. I think they'll have at least packages of about 10 balls.

That could be just the general genetic make up of people in India. I heard somewhere that all the skeletons of peasants found in India are generally short but very sturdy. Or something like that. There is a good chance I'm talking out of my ass though.

Well, my dad told me this. When he worked in Iraq, one of his work mates caught a mouse on a home-made mouse trap(big bottle with cheese on the bottom placed on a table, the mouse runs to the cheese, the bottle falls, the string tied to the bottle prevents it from falling, instead it just hangs and the mouse is trapped), and shortly after that saw a scorpion. He took the scorpion, placed it with the mouse in the big bottle, and after couple of minutes of being scared they started to fight. IIRC the mouse bit the scorpions head several times and didn't care much of the scorpion's stings(it wasn't poisonous). In the end the mouse killed the scorpion.

I honestly didn't know that a mouse is so strong before my dad told me this(he's not lying).

Where may I go to collect information regarding the neighborhoods (or whatever random districts may be assigned) of the Twin Cities and the surrounding metro area? Demographic info, area-specific maps (very preferable), crime stats, things in the area, and pictures (a plus).

If it were New York City, it'd be mostly unnecessary since I have a feel for most areas in this wide city, but admittedly, some of these neighborhood names are foreign (to me) and I can't quite piece them together with the overall map of the metro area. Gotta learn somehow. Once I know the areas, I can easily combine that knowledge with things like the transit maps and major roads and so forth, but I gotta know what I'm looking at, first.

Multiple sites are fine if they can complement each other or overlap.

Why do some sports players (like in American Football) wear paint below their eyes? Is it a psychological thing (war paint) or does it really help with some supposed problem with reflected floodlight, cause that's what I've been hearing.

But chemistry was useful just to know things like why things rust, what I shouldn't eat when I just wake up, why it's a good idea to wear gloves when cleaning the oven, why I shouldn't leave my guitar by the radiator, why putting salt in the water and leaving the lid on makes water boil faster... etc.

Let's assume I didn't pay too much attention in chemistry class ... why shouldn't I eat when I just woke up?

why do i keep getting nosebleeds on a daily basis?

If it's not the high blood pressure thing, have you had a lot of exercise lately that you're not used to? I got the worst nose bleed of my life as a teenager after overexercising on a bike, I had made blood vessels in my nose burst. :crazyeye:

Can we celebrate an CFC impersonation contest here in off-topic? I think it would be fun see how people impersonates Emperor2, Rambuchan and etc. But I don't know if rules here allow us to do so.

We do that for April Fool's day.

With consent ofcourse.

Pakistan 'sparks YouTube outage'

Pakistan's attempts to block access to YouTube have been blamed for an almost global blackout of the video website for more than an hour on Sunday.
BBC News has learned that the outage was almost certainly connected to Pakistan Telecom and Asian internet service provider PCCW.

A leading net professional said the global outage was "probably a mistake".

Pakistan ordered internet service providers to block the site because of content deemed offensive to Islam.

The BBC News website's technology editor, Darren Waters, says that to block Pakistan's citizens from accessing YouTube it is believed Pakistan Telecom "hijacked" the web server address of the popular video site.

Those details were then passed on to the country's internet service providers so that anyone in Pakistan attempting to go to YouTube was instead re-directed to a different address.

But the details of the "hijack" were leaked out into the wider internet from PCCW and as a result YouTube was mistakenly blocked by internet service providers around the world.

The block on the servers was lifted once PCCW had been told of the issue by engineers at YouTube.

A leading net professional told BBC News: "This was probably a simple mistake by an engineer at Pakistan Telecom. There's nothing to suggest this was malicious."

IP hijacking involves taking over a web site's unique address by corrupting the internet's routing tables, which direct the flow of data around the world.

No-one at YouTube or PCCW was immediately available for comment.

Cause of ban

Reports said Pakistan made the move because YouTube content included Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that have outraged many.

But one report said a trailer for a forthcoming film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, which portrays Islam in a negative light, was behind the ban.

"They [Pakistan's telecommunications authority] asked us to ban it immediately... and the order says the ban will continue until further notice," said Wahaj-us-Siraj, convener of the Association of Pakistan Internet Service Providers.

The government decision has caused uproar in Pakistan, according to Wahaj-us-Siraj:

"Users are quite upset. They're screaming at ISPs which can't do anything.

"The government has valid reason for that, but they have to find a better way of doing it. If we continue blocking popular websites, people will stop using the internet."

Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand.
