View Full Version : Official Super Bowl Thread
Martacus Feb 03, 2008, 07:04 PM Well, for those who have any interest, Super Bowl 42 is on right now, at halftime. New England is up 7-3; obviously this has been a game of defense all the way so far. I figured I'd get a thread started during halftime if anyone is interested, so for those watching this annual American bacchanalia of violent sport (and possibly obscene advertisements), who are you cheering for (if anyone), and what's your take on things? Perhaps this thread belongs in the Sports Talk forum, but on the other hand, nobody's there and these games tend to have broader-than-usual appeal. I know I generally don't pay much if any attention to sports (especially US football), but I like to watch the big game anyways. So fire away!
Nylan Feb 03, 2008, 07:06 PM So much for a NE blowout in the first quarter. That's all I'm sayin'.
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 07:07 PM Go Terrorists Giants! (Hey, if one team is the Patriots, someone has to oppose them.)
That said, it's the halftime show and I generally tune out for that half hour or so.
Naval Power Feb 03, 2008, 07:09 PM This may sound obvious, but if the Giants don't score, they won't win. And I'm not talking field goals :|

Hey, John Madden's here! :p
I kiid, I kiid...
Slavic Sioux Feb 03, 2008, 07:12 PM I think this should go into the sports section instead of OT like it is now.
Nylan Feb 03, 2008, 07:17 PM I think it was put here because nobody is in the sports section, and he's looking for more of an OT perspective on things, since this game appeals to more than just those who post in the sports forum.
general_kill Feb 03, 2008, 07:29 PM Giants all the way. I'm from NY, its root for the home team by default.

Exactly, and I said as much.
So anyways, I do fully expect the patriots to win, but at least they're going to have to fight for it if the Giants can keep up the defense. I'm all for that. And of course, I feel somewhat obligated to cheer for a team when the QB is related to my "home" team's QB (Peyton Manning).
Also, I don't like cheaters, so I'm hoping the Patriots get schooled for it. They were caught stealing another team's play book before the season began, weren't they?

Something like that. But if this season taught us anything, it taught us that they play better by not cheating :mischief:
Berzerker Feb 03, 2008, 08:26 PM part of me wants NE to go undefeated, part of me wants the underdog
general_kill Feb 03, 2008, 08:28 PM I sense an overtime coming.
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 08:40 PM Damnation. New England touchdown.
Still an entertaining game, though.

The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 08:57 PM I don't believe in miracles but Giants better pull one off now!

Berzerker Feb 03, 2008, 09:03 PM wow, I'm surprised NY didn't have someone in deep center on that. Moss had em beat

Why is that ironic?
And this is pretty refreshing since the Giants have managed to blow it ever since I started watching football (which was after the Giants victory over the Bills).
And better yet, my unofficial mother-in-law was pulling hard for the Patriots! :yeah:

Incorrect. It has been done by at least two other teams.
The New England Patriots did it back in 2002, by defeating the STL Rams.
The Baltimore Ravens did it back in 2001, by defeating the NY Giants.

Not to mention that Eli leads his team on game winning drive late in the 4th after the Empire scored a TD.
David Tyree just cemented iconic status in Super Bowl history. What a catch.

Nylan Feb 03, 2008, 09:50 PM This was the greatest football game i've ever seen in my entire life.
Err...what?
Oh yeah that's right, you weren't absolutely thrilled at the last second "prayer" that won BYU an amazing victory not too long ago.
;)
It was indeed an epic game though, one of the very best. I don't think there's anything as picturesque as "the prayer", but this one comes pretty close.
I'd mock the patriots for falling so hard...but I'm a 49ers fan
dojoboy Feb 03, 2008, 09:52 PM David Tyree just cemented iconic status in Super Bowl history. What a catch.

I didnt actually see the game. Are we talking about how they beat UCLA on the blocked field goal? I mean, that was cool and all, but it was also a fairly inconsequential bowl game...the drama wasn't nearly the same. That wasn't even the best BYU game (how about when they scored 21 points in 4 min to beat SMU in the Holiday Bowl in the mid 1980s? Its the one impossible scenario in NCAA football for the ps2)
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 09:55 PM I actually thought Eli Manning was down until I saw him run past those handful of Patriots.
Man, whoda thunk it? Eli Manning? People were ready to throw him into the East River so many times.

No, we're talking about a certain BYU-Utah game won in the final seconds by a beautiful pass to a receiver on his knees appearing to be in prayer.
Then again, that's just the best game of my lifetime. BYU has certainly pulled some crazy stunts in the past, and they're always a treat to watch.
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 10:01 PM Didn't we get that in Green Bay?
I was on a plane back to JFK that night, unfortunately. :(
But I mean the Dallas-Green Bay NFL championship game 41 years ago.

I think i enjoyed this game a little more than the 2006 Rose Bowl, although that game also kicked butt. Thats my number 2, and Pats Rams would be number 4 (2002 Fiesta Bowl is my number 3)
I wasn't alive for the other super bowls you mentioned...but none of them involved an undefeated team losing...to ELI MANNING!!

Hmm. There have been crazy BYU games, since they've been running that goofy spread, and they don't play a lick of defense...but nobody outside the Mountain West Time Zone (who doesn't have a temple recommend) cares about BYU football. The game product is really exciting, but the drama and media hype doesn't compare
bigdog5994 Feb 03, 2008, 10:03 PM yes im so happy to see that bastard Tom Brady get his ass kicked this was by far the best game all season OMG im so excited

This much is true, nobody really cares. But just as I'll argue Alabama-Auburn is a bigger rivalry than OSU-Michigan, I'll say that game was more epic than it's given credit for.
Eran of Arcadia Feb 03, 2008, 10:10 PM Now, as a die hard Green Bay fan, when a team beats us I usually root against them, hard. And I tend to root hard against teams from NY as well. Still, I knew there was no way I could root against the Giants in this one. No way. And so, when Eli threw that TD with :35 left, and my vision went all blurry, and my arms went numb, and I started hyperventilating, I decided it wasn't a heart attack.
Seriously. Just about passed out.
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 10:12 PM I got serious love for the Packers, but I just hope that one day, we can all unite, as Americans, against the Patriots.
And I love the fact that Michael Irvin is pitching the QVC Super Bowl products tonight.
cubsfan6506 Feb 03, 2008, 10:14 PM Before today, I thought Eli had the mental constitution of Rex Grossman.
Rex and Eli are very much hte same. They're both young and inosistant quarterbacks who show signs of greatness. Rex just couldn't do it in the superbowl and Eli could.
Eran of Arcadia Feb 03, 2008, 10:14 PM At least this way we didn't die in vain. That is, in fact, what I told my father when I called him seconds after the game officially ended.
Irish Caesar Feb 03, 2008, 11:09 PM As disappointing as that was, I expected it.
Hell, I would have put money on the Giants after the Patriots scored in that fourth-quarter drive.
I'm not upset at the Giants for winning (despite hating New York), I'm upset at the Patriots for not bringing the game that they brought all season.
The Yankee Feb 03, 2008, 11:12 PM I do have to give credit to those New Englanders for putting up their part in a great game and for not packing it in the way other teams might have done, even in close games.

You must have watched a different game than I did, then.
The Patriots played ten minutes of football this evening.
Take nothing away from the Giants, of course, they were playing good ball... but Brady's line was a disgrace and he wasn't playing well most of the night, either.

jeps Feb 03, 2008, 11:27 PM That was a great game on SO many levels. Best superbowl since XXXIX, at least
Great game, great finish, close score, good to the end, GREAT pass-rush on both sides (and eli staying up and then throwing that pass... how the #()% did he not get sacked? i never had much respect for him till now. he was just another eric lindros in my eyes, but he just proved me wrong), and man, that game was intense.

Their offense completely went down the tubes, but some teams still would have packed it in after an awful first half like that.
Adamb0mb Feb 04, 2008, 12:19 AM Hell of a game.
While my 49ers may not be doing much this was certainly a great game to see. A neck and neck battle with the underdog pulling ahead in the final moments... great stuff.
Cheezy the Wiz Feb 04, 2008, 12:26 AM You must have watched a different game than I did, then.
The Patriots played ten minutes of football this evening.
It was more like "New York abandoned it's defensive strategy for ten minutes."
For some strange reason, they decided that it was suddenly a bad idea to blitz Tom Brady repeatedly. When he can actually think for a second, he can fire that arm cannon of his and hit a reciever with near-impunity. The only reason the Pats got to score that last TD was because the Giants decided to abandon the defensive strategy that had been successfully shutting down the league's premier offense for the first three and a half quarters of ballgame.
The Yankee Feb 04, 2008, 12:32 AM Hey, the Patriots offense was a huge letdown (for them), but it wasn't due to a lack of trying, at least.
They'll be at it again next year. I only hope they get knocked off again.

IglooDude Feb 04, 2008, 06:38 AM I'm a Dolphins fan living in Patriot country. To say that I'm a happy camper right now is a bit like calling the sun hot. :D
But damn that was a good game. I was really expecting the usual heroics from Brady & Co. to get a field goal in the last 35 seconds and then another in overtime.

Huge Dolphins fan here as well. When I was in 9th grade, my parents drove me 14+ hours in a Buick Vega to see Bob Griese, Tony Nathan, and the lot beat the Bills. I took immense pleasure in the Patriots' loss.

JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 09:03 AM Bah. The 07 Patriots went 18-0 and the 72 Dolphins went 17-0. The Patriots did this in the salary cap era, a dynamic dramatically different than 72, and their streak wasn't supposed to happen. The 72 Dolphins annoy me, quite frankly, because the Pat's accomplished alot more than they did. More preseason games, more regular season games, more playoff games. Put it in perspective. Dolphins fans, you need to stop hanging onto a season that was 35 years ago. It's kinda pathetic. Like Mercury Morris rapping.

Eran of Arcadia Feb 04, 2008, 09:05 AM I do think the '72 Dolphins clinging to their record is getting old. Every other major record I have seen broken, the old holder was there to congratulate them.
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 09:07 AM I would have picked Umenyiora, but the whole defense played well.

No. Justin Tuck led the G-Man Defense.
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 09:09 AM So, what went wrong?
Patriots punted on 4th and 2 from the Giants 40...All year long they went for it in this situation
Patriots went for it on 4th and 11 from the Giants 32...well within range of Gostowski. A field goal would've changed the dynamic.
Be perfectly clear: Despite these two mistakes, the Giants had to play perfect and get a miracle play to beat the Pats. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
This also wasn't the greatest super bowl ever. Pats/Panthers was amazing. A few Dallas games in the 90s, some 49ers games in the 80s, and SB3. And SB3

The Dolphins went 1-15 this year, and several people I consider friends gave me all sorts of crap for being their fan this year. If the Pats had won, you can be sure that I'd never hear the end of it. So you can forgive me (or not) for hanging on it myself.
The only thing that could have been better for this game and a cosmic sense of karma is if it'd been the Chicago Bears that won yesterday instead of the NY Giants (and for those of you not steeped in NFL history, the '85 Bears crushed the Patriots in that Super Bowl, having lost only one game all year - to the Dolphins).

And the Dolphins' undefeated season was supposed to happen? I think once you take an honest look at the rules of the game in 1972 and compare them to those today, you'll understand how the Patriots, and recent offenses, were able to accomplish what they did statistically. Granted, Brady is a great player. It takes a great quarterback for those types of stats.
And, they play fewer preseason games now than in '72 (6 preseason/14 regular season) then now (4 preseason/16 regular season). Also, the Dolphins had to win 2 playoff games as did the Patriots.
As for the salary cap, what football player was making money in '72? Joe Namath? No free agency in '72 = no need for a salary cap. Plus, one can argue that with free agency, it's easier to build a champion. How else do you explain the early success of Carolina & Jacksonville.
Put it in perspective. Dolphins fans, you need to stop hanging onto a season that was 35 years ago.
It's never brought up unless the record is challenged. No one talks about the single season HR record until it's challenged. The undefeated season is the pinnacle in the sports world. To refuse that is denial!
It's not pathetic. It's historical! :D

JollyRoger Feb 04, 2008, 09:54 AM Nice game last night. I assume that was the play-in game to determine who faces the Cowboys next week in the Super Bowl.
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 10:02 AM Dojoboy,
Free agency prevents great players from being locked up by a team that has alot of money. Granted in 72 football wasn't as much a cashcow, but it was coming into its own.
But this was 35 years ago. They won 17 straight. The Patriots won 18 straight. I don't see how anyone can with a straight face still stick out a neener-neener face...especially given how long ago it was.

Actually it dosent upset me at all. but I'm sick of threads which fall into any otf the other subforums categories being moved so why shouldnt this one be? Its a sports thread; have it in the sports forum. Its also a sport predominantly of interest to only one country, unlike say football.

I simply disagree that it's harder to go undefeated now versus in the '70s. Free-agency works both ways. It is harder for a team to keep a good player, but it's just as easy to acquire a good player. Adding Randy Moss was huge for the Patriots, and then throwing in a find like Welker is icing on the cake. Yes, Brady & the Patriots were good without them, but with them they were nearly unbeatable.
The Patriots, and others, have a great deal to point to; however, they didn't finish undefeated. Their 18 wins are impressive, but they weren't finished. Again, my point isn't to dismiss them. They are an amazing team.
What does "neener-neener" mean?
Why do people not make such arguments against records in other sports that were made so long ago? Surely a team record like the Dolphins holds more water than individual records.
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 11:06 AM My point is this: Before they lost, the Pats went 18-0, one better than the previous record. Yes, they did not win their final game, but they played 2 more regular season games.
Is it fair to compare an apple to an orange? Randy Moss broke the TD record set by Jerry Rice...cept that Jerry Rice set it in a strike shortened 12 game season. What about baseball where 61 home runs in 152 games was the record...and then the season became 161 games? There's my point.

Well, I agree comparing records is difficult. However, comparing apples to oranges is what makes the debate possible. If it was apples to apples, there'd be no debate.
Question: Do you believe the Patriots '07 season was better than the Dolphins '72 season?

And mine would be that 18 consecutive wins in a season is a record (AFAIK). 18 wins in a season is tied for the record with the '84 49ers and '85 Bears (again, AFAIK). 16 regular-season wins is also a record, I'd assume. You can (and are) arguing that those records are as good as or better than the Dolphin's 15 game regular season record and their 17 consecutive wins in a season record. But personally I see "a perfect season" as being shorthand not for numbers of wins, but for numbers of losses. Miami unquestionably has the record for the fewest number of losses in an NFL season - zero.
Eran of Arcadia Feb 04, 2008, 11:34 AM They are tied with a team from the 1930's I think - the Bears had like a 9-0-2 record or something.
But yeah, fewest losses plus ties, no question.
Nice game last night. I assume that was the play-in game to determine who faces the Cowboys next week in the Super Bowl.
Yes, except that instead of being held next week, it will be held retroactively, 3 weeks ago (since they can tell the future and knew who would win).
The Yankee Feb 04, 2008, 11:42 AM The two undefeated (and untied) Bears teams in the 1934 and 1942 lost their championship games.
Eran of Arcadia Feb 04, 2008, 11:46 AM Ah, shows what I know.
IglooDude Feb 04, 2008, 11:57 AM The '48 Cleveland Browns were the other (American, non-soccer) football team to have a perfect season (15-0-0), but they aren't generally counted because they were not in the NFL at the time.
And perhaps this thread is ready to get moved into the Sports sub-forum...
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 12:07 PM Nah, here's where its OT.
How many folks saw that Barack Obama got in a TV ad during the super bowl? We saw a 30 second clip during the game. Brilliant strategy I must say, getting ads with local affiliates and circumventing Fox's national ad ban.
RedRalphWiggum Feb 04, 2008, 12:09 PM for the record I was being smartarsed, I dont mind it being here, but please bear in mind when I asked for new avatar suggestions it got moved immediately, this got 5 pages... maybe dont be so hasty to move things in future, even if you, the mod, isnt personally interested in them ;-)
Eran of Arcadia Feb 04, 2008, 12:16 PM I, too, saw the Obama ad.
Masquerouge Feb 04, 2008, 12:23 PM I think that was easily one of the best superbowls I've watched. The underdog wins in a thrilling last-minute play...
That Hail Mary Manning did after getting out of three guys to avoid the sack, and the catch on the helmet... wow! Great moment :)

I'm calling it the "Imperfect Reception". :D
Tenochtitlan Feb 04, 2008, 12:29 PM You better BELIEVE it
augurey Feb 04, 2008, 01:06 PM Question: Do you believe the Patriots '07 season was better than the Dolphins '72 season?
Is this a serious question? The '72 Dolphins played one of the easiest schedules, ever. They were the underdog in the Superbowl.
Irish Caesar Feb 04, 2008, 01:47 PM No. Justin Tuck led the G-Man Defense.
Fair enough; anyone on the defense would have been a better choice than Manning, though.
Nah, here's where its OT.

We saw it here, too.
Excellent call to buy local ads rather than a national ad... although Sen. Obama shouldn't be in any danger of losing Atlanta.
Junzi Nicuzn Feb 04, 2008, 06:07 PM Yeah, but who got to play the 2007 Dolphins twice?
Who also had to play the Super Bowl XLII champs twice?

Answer the question.
Red Door Feb 04, 2008, 06:29 PM Nice game last night. I assume that was the play-in game to determine who faces the Cowboys next week in the Super Bowl.
No, you are mistaken, it's the play-in to play the 'Skins.
Eli Manning deserved that MVP last night, played a good game, two great throws, but I was darn close to voting for David Tyree for that catch. I still can't think of a good nickname for that play. ESPN seems settled on throwing "Phantom" in there, because of the play name. I don't like it.
The Yankee Feb 04, 2008, 06:34 PM A news tidbit said that this was the highest-rated Super Bowl.
jeps Feb 04, 2008, 07:56 PM 18-0 and MUCH overhype will do that to a game, yes.
and why would friends give you crap for being a dolphins fan in a 1-15 season? you have my COMPLETE respect for being their fan, especially when you live in a patriots area, so it would be easy and not technically bandwagon jumping to switch.
illram Feb 04, 2008, 08:07 PM Games like this teach me valuable lessons. 1) I will always gladly take a 10-6 season and a SB championship than chase perfection only to be shot down horribly in the end. 2) You take a crushing defeat, you get back on your feet, and you think about how you can come back and be better tomorrow.
But that feeling in the morning where you think, briefly, that it was all just a horrible dream, and then reality slowly creeps in? I don't like that feeling.
JollyRoger Feb 04, 2008, 09:01 PM Who also had to play the Super Bowl XLII champs twice?
I know a team that played them 3 times and went 2-1 against them.
Eran of Arcadia Feb 04, 2008, 09:14 PM Yeah, but apparently, for some reason the playoffs count a lot more.
(I mean, my team went 1-1 against them, and the loss ended up counting more, so it's not like I don't empathize, but . . .)
JerichoHill Feb 04, 2008, 09:22 PM Answer the question.
Why do you care about a season that happened 35 years ago so much?
JollyRoger Feb 04, 2008, 09:26 PM Why do you care about a season that happened 35 years ago so much?
I'm still bitter over 1920. The Decatur Staleys were robbed.
jeps Feb 04, 2008, 09:29 PM I'm bitter over the Florida Gators UNDEFEATED season in 1911 (1 tie i think). WE WERE SO CLOSE TO BEATING IT LAST YEAR, AND THEY STEAL IT FROM US!
The Yankee Feb 05, 2008, 12:31 AM I'm still bitter over 1920. The Decatur Staleys were robbed.
Damn Akron Pros. And Green Bay won ten games in 1932. Yet they gave it to Da Bears. Come on, when you have six tie games in a season of 14 games, you don't deserve to be the champions!
It's not fair!
jeps Feb 05, 2008, 12:40 AM also, even worse is that the UofT beat PARKDALE 26-6 for the grey cup in 1909. Parkdale was the WAY better team.

Didn't see any campaign ads and was wondering about the sudden disappearance of them. I did get to see a few commercials regarding indian gaming proposals though.

To be fair, my friends are sadists, so it isn't entirely unexpected.
As to why I'd care? I dunno, ask the Red Sox fans around here why they care about Red Sox history. Team legacy is important to fans, and when one is a fan of a team that is the only one to accomplish a pretty significant achievement, it is only natural to want them to remain alone in the record books for it - particularly in a year where the team is very nearly going into the record books for the exact opposite "achievement". The Dolphins were so bad and the Patriots so good this year, that I only wanted two of thirty-five games to go my way - and that's all I got, two of thirty-five. One Dolphins win, and one Patriots loss.
Junzi Nicuzn Feb 05, 2008, 10:00 AM I know a team that played them 3 times and went 2-1 against them.
Then obviously that team should be crowned the real champions. Or maybe a team's schedule should not be used as the only indicator of how good that team is or is not.

that's awesome
dojoboy Feb 05, 2008, 10:41 AM Why do you care about a season that happened 35 years ago so much?
Well, I'm not so much - just moving the discussion toward a conclusion. I actually posted that in response to augurey who appeared to think my question to you was somehow comical to even conceive. Yet, he hasn't replied. :hmm:

I'm proud of you man! :goodjob:
I ordered a new Dolphins hat yesterday. Can't wait!

You are a good man, welcome to the 'Phin Club :scan: .
Martacus Feb 05, 2008, 10:59 PM So anyways, I do fully expect the patriots to win, but at least they're going to have to fight for it if the Giants can keep up the defense.
Never got a chance to follow up during the game, but obviously I'm eating these words right about now.
And boy, do they taste good.
The Yankee Feb 07, 2008, 04:34 AM I know, I have to rub it in one last time before I finally let go of football season (no, the Pro Bowl doesn't count for me).
http://i31.tinypic.com/a1mz9c.gif
Can't wait for the next season!
rhawn Feb 07, 2008, 07:58 PM That's pretty brutal. Its rock salt ground into a gaping wound. I hope the G-Men have fun at Disney World.
jeps Feb 07, 2008, 08:34 PM who did say it this year? (disneyland/world)
and BTW, the play of the year was manning evading the sacks. or the elam scramble in week (2?). :p
rhawn Feb 07, 2008, 09:22 PM It was Eli.......... Eli.
Darkness Feb 08, 2008, 02:37 AM Eli of couse. Biggest play in the biggest game of the year...
jeps Feb 08, 2008, 06:48 AM I WAS being sarcastic about the scramble kick, but yeah, this was the PotY. and to Tyree, who had all of 4 regular season receptions...
CEO Daedalus Feb 09, 2008, 02:38 PM The Patriots screwed up big unfortunatly in the 4th quarter. They could've won.
But the Giants one, and Im so glad they did.
Because
Im from New York
Serutan Feb 11, 2008, 08:07 AM I'm glad the Giants won, but I may change my mind after the 10^20 th
Manning commercial...
The Yankee Feb 11, 2008, 11:38 AM I've only seen that commercial once...:dunno:
I must be watching the wrong channels.
CEO Daedalus Feb 11, 2008, 05:52 PM don't they have differnet commercial line ups in different states and sections due to different channels?
Use of the word different in one sentence: 3Beat that
jeps Feb 11, 2008, 06:33 PM different channels in different states (and provinces, and even cities) show different commercials at different times because of the different markets and target audiences.
there, I did, and I could have used two more but decided not to be redundant
