I was playing as Willem van Oranje on my first emperor game ever, and I was complaining about how besides the difficulty I got a pretty sorry starting position, in an archipielago map where starting position means even more than in any other maps.
I was still doing pretty damn well, then I got lazy with micro management and sent my caravels on automated explore and they missed a land mass reachable by galleys which was pretty big and nice overall.
I got even more pissed when one of my caravels was sunk by a barbarian galley, I was playing with locked assets and didnt check random seed on reload but I was considering reloading and sailing in a different direction but then I decided that with all that bad luck something good had to come around and that if I cheated I would mess it up.
I was winning the liberalism race and was planning on using it for astronomy, you know how important astronomy is in an archipielago map, lo and behold I found a goodie hut in 1000 AD in the middle of ice and tundra, Joao had settled two cities there already and I had just settled mine, I guess he was running hereditary rule and needed all the garrisons he could use and decided not to go for the hut.
I did and first I heard this sound effect for when you discover a new tech, tink! turururn and got all excited, then the renaissance screen came up and I figured it had to be astronomy, I was afraid of clicking in the OK button and find out it was some other tech, after a while I did and Astronomy did came up!

Man this has to be the luckiest thing to ever happen to me in Civ!

The one downside is that I dont know what to get from liberalism anymore.:p

I also got astronomy from a hut. I was playing the Portugese on a terra map and my troops exploring the new world popped it. It was the only time I've ever gotten a tech that late from a hut.

If I'm remembering correctly, Astronomy is the most advanced tech you can get from a hut.

Do you need any techs before popping Astronomy or is it completely random?

All the prereqs. Basically you need to be at the point where you can research it yourself. Some of our HOF players will locate a hut and position troops around it to protect it, than when they know the prereqs they'll pop the hut in the hopes of getting Astronomy.

Yeah I got that lucky in a game playing on a terra map. I sent a caravel with explorers to the empty continent and the first hut I entered gave me astronomy! Needless to say, I started building galleons and settlers!!

It happened to me yesterday, some time after I had been reading this thread ;)

Don't you have to be at war with pretty much everyone to protect a hut in this manner? Otherwise, troops could pass right through your forces, since they did away with zones of control and allowed two units (from diff. civs) to occupy the same space...

Or am I missing something, as usual? :)
