View Full Version : Religion Mod: Questions
IdiotsOpposite Feb 06, 2008, 05:41 PM I'm trying to construct a mod where religions have effects specific to one religion. Now, normally, I would do this on my own, but since I'm probably a complete idiot, I wanted to ask the people who might play this mod a few questions about some PRELIMINARY IDEAS for the religions.
Note: These are PRELIMINARY. Very much subject to change.
I thought that if you were Taoist as your state religion, you couldn't chop forests (you can still chop jungles), but you get +3 happiness in cities size 3 and above. For Hinduism, you would be required to run caste system, but if you weren't Hindu, you couldn't run caste system. Confucians can't chop forests, but have no civic upkeep. Buddhist civilizations would get a 10% chance, if a unit dies, of you getting a free unit, at half health, of the same type at your capital. Islamic temples would give +25% culture if the state religion was Islam. Judaic cultures would receive no health bonuses from non-kosher foods (Pigs, etc.) but get +2 experience points.
Which are good ideas, which are bad ones, and what do you think would be a good idea?
Also, on more of a technical thing, can you force a civilization to change a civic? If someone who is running Tribalism switches to Hinduism as their state religion, they can still be Tribalist, they just can't switch back to it if they switch out. Can you make it so that if you switch to Hinduism, you switch to Caste System?

I have no idea how you'd do this.
The Warlords Chinese Unification scenario gives Daoism +1 happiness from all forests, which is kind of similar and potentially easier (the scenario uses civics, not religions, to represent religion though).
For Hinduism, you would be required to run caste system, but if you weren't Hindu, you couldn't run caste system.
No, I think this is a bad idea. The whole point of having caste system as a civic is that it's not just the Hindu caste system. And besides, why effectively remove a civic entirely?
Confucians can't chop forests, but have no civic upkeep.
Again, fine, but hell to code.
Chinese unification gives Confucianism +2 health per city.
Buddhist civilizations would get a 10% chance, if a unit dies, of you getting a free unit, at half health, of the same type at your capital.
Sounds a bit too militaristic for Buddhism.
Islamic temples would give +25% culture if the state religion was Islam.
Fine, if a little generic.
Judaic cultures would receive no health bonuses from non-kosher foods (Pigs, etc.) but get +2 experience points.
Maybe incorporate something similar into Hinduism with cows.

I'm sure you can, the same way you can prevent chopping of forests. The question is how good are you at SDK modding.
krille Feb 06, 2008, 08:37 PM With Hinduism, cows should actually have an adverse effect on health! (And eat some food, ie no food bonus either.) That would be hillarious!
As for pigs, muslims shouldn't be able to consume them either.
IdiotsOpposite Feb 07, 2008, 05:39 PM Thanks for the feedback. Right now, I'm more worried about the ideas part than the technical part, as what's the point of making a mod that no one likes? However, cows/pigs/"bad food" wouldn't take away the food bonus, but it wouldn't add a health bonus.
So, Hinduism idea should be scrapped... but it was a good one too! What about this? Hindus must run caste system, but cows give -2 health? Add another food resource with the cows and it might be workable.
The Islamic thing is kind of basic, but I really couldn't think of anything for Islam or Christianity. Especially Christianity. Perhaps... Christians get 50 free mechanized infantry with 37 experience? :p Just kidding.
What can you really do with Buddhism, though? That was the only idea I came up with.
I like the Taoism idea that you showed better, so I'm going to do it. Also, I'm scrapping the forests part of the Confucianism idea, so could someone help me think of a negative effect?

It wasn't a good idea, caste system the civic is far broader than the Hindu caste system and by connecting them you're just encouraging the misconception that it's not.

Make more generic effects of a vaguely religious nature for Buddhism and Christianity. Who will know the difference?
