I have been playing around with espionage this game. I started off with my usual specialists strategy to get my research off to a quick start to keep a tech lead. I did great as I lowered the level from noble to warlord as I am still having difficulty with noble still.

Anyway, I started conquering cities and was being slowed down from the new cities being in riot mode. I found that a great artist's 4000 cultural bonus would end rioting, but you can only get a few in the game to use for that.

I thought I'd try out some espionage as I was way ahead of the AI's by at least 1 full era - lol. I noticed there was an influence culture or something similar and it said it would raise it by 5% if successful. I was using it to see if he would offer me the city from so much culture(he had given me one already and it was why I was trying espionage. I figured if I could get him to riot, then he'd give up the city without fighting for it!) Well, I seemed to have gotten him mad from trying all these espionage options on him and he declared war on me - hehe.

I then quickly gathered up a force and when I took out the city I was testing the culture on had only a couple of turns on rioting. So i thought cool, I can use that on other cities, except he was so weak and I so strong I ended up killing him before I could get my espionage points built back up.

A lot later in game, around 1900 I started to declare my last war on the last island to see if I could get a domination victory(I turned culture way down so I could continue). I set up espionage a little late and after getting a good foothold on the island I started making spies, plus I had a Great Spy. But again I was conquering too fast and decided to send the spies in 2 or 3 cities deep.

At this point I was doing ok, but I couldn't get the option to influence his culture? Before, I had to poison water and then support riots before the influence culture came up(This may have just been a coincident.)

Is there something I need to do to make it come back up again? Is it a defense he has (De Gualle)? Was it obsoleted by newer tech?

If anyone has any links on espionage and reducing riots, I'd be greatful.
