View Full Version : The Best Random Event You've gotten
Johnpecan Feb 11, 2008, 05:49 PM A little preface, I'm no expert Civ player but I'm enjoying it immensely and playing at the Monarch level. With my lack of experience, I'm sure there are some random events that I haven't received before.
But the other day, I was playing a continents game and leading a massive infantry/rifleman/cannon assault across my continent. I got a random event which was pretty amazing. I'm not at my home computer so I forget the exact text, but the bottom line was that ALL my gunpowder units received the MARCH promotion (can heal while moving). This was the nail in the coffin for the enemies on my continent (whom I had a tech lead on). I also noticed that newly created gunpowder units (other than mech infantry that start with it) were created with march too.
I was thinking wow, that was the best random event that has ever happened to me. The ability to march my infantry withouts stopping was a beautiful site. I know a they are all situational, but what are some of the best random events you've gotten?
lordqarlyn Feb 11, 2008, 06:03 PM I had that event before, though not as many riflemen as you had.
bioelectricclam Feb 11, 2008, 08:02 PM Most of the random events I've had so far have been harmful, ha ha (worst one being floods that destroyed a courthouse 3 turns after I whipped it). Probably the best I've seen was the one that gave my foodstores away in exchange for diplomancy boost.
Melon Head Feb 11, 2008, 08:11 PM That march one sounds excellent. There's also one giving all axes cover which is pretty amazing if you get it right before an axe rush. Also, if you're running free market there's a -25% inflation one which is pretty spectacular too.
Commodore Nate Feb 11, 2008, 11:22 PM I've seen that march one, but usually pick the happiness bonus instead.
I seem to always get it while transitioning into police state, and I've gotten it twice, so I can't complain :)
I know I had a better event in the past, but it escapes me at the moment. But if I didn't have that one event, this one would take the cake.
JustinianVII Feb 12, 2008, 12:13 AM Not exactly the best event, but I've noticed that a resourceless hill that discovers tin usually ends up discovering Gems, as well. A heavy production and commerce tile, something along the lines of 5 :hammers: and 7 :commerce: each time

Awesome!!! I have never had that happened to me! And yes there is no way to describe that other than  .
JBossch Feb 12, 2008, 12:16 AM I got the cover event which gave the promotion to all melee units. At the time, I had a stack of 14 jaguars 2 turns from invading Sury (immortal difficulty). Yeah, that helped a little.
IPEX-731BA5DD06 Feb 12, 2008, 12:31 AM My best random event was a 3 times random event hit on one tile, it got;
1) Tin-Plains hill
2)Gems-Plains hill by river
3)Truffles-Plains hill, by river that now feeds itself...
I've had the March random event once...very nice.....that one........and I actually got the 'man called Jeb' event too....Nice, uncovered ALL oil, and I wasn't even past Iron working by then...lol
Julian Delphiki Feb 12, 2008, 01:07 AM Cover I for archers just before doing an archer rush as Tokugawa. :pat:
druidravi Feb 12, 2008, 01:58 AM I didn't have copper in my empire and just did a peaceful rex with archers . Shaka was my neibhour he got cover / in 10 turns attacked me with impis/ axes .
I was going to attack Victoria with axes/swords a few cats . She gets free shock promotion to all her axes
AmazonQueen Feb 12, 2008, 02:37 AM I think the best I've had was free Flanking I promotion for all my mounted units with Justinian. Then I got the knights quest too.
Incan Emperor Feb 12, 2008, 04:02 AM I didn't have copper in my empire and just did a peaceful rex with archers . Shaka was my neibhour he got cover / in 10 turns attacked me with impis/ axes .

Damn if those where the best I cant fathom what the worst would be.

I had the 25% reduction on inflation.
That one is clearly awesome!
r_rolo1 Feb 12, 2008, 04:26 AM A small story:
I got the shock event in one game.
Next turn I got the cover one.....
Can you devise how it ended?
I was playing a OCC and I would only get metals ( iron ) in my cultural borders when the city would hit legendary.... :wallbash:

great cover+shock warriors
Sib Feb 12, 2008, 06:33 AM I seem to always get an 'improved coal' event which can either add a hefty 4:hammers: to coal plants, whic i rarely build, or 2:hammers: and a health to dry dock; which, whilst nice isn't that useful. The best one I've had was an extra 2 :espionage: per barracks when i was already running nationalism. That was handy.
I haven't had any missions for ages, and when i do get them I always seem to get 'greed', which tends to be hard and not worth the effort.
Honkoid Feb 12, 2008, 06:37 AM I got the "golden age of musketeers"-quest as Suleyman. That was very fortunate, since I already intended to take advantage of the Janissaries. To top that, the quest had a special reward for owning the Taj Mahal, which I was just building. Being curious, I delayed the last Janissaries one or two turns and when I finished the quest, now having the Taj Mahal, I could choose another golden age!
On top of it I had the Mausoleum of Maussollos. That made 24 turns of golden age in a row! The quest couldn't have come at a better time :D
oyzar Feb 12, 2008, 06:37 AM Getting the +2 health -2 pop +2 unhappy event within the first 15 turns of the game is so nuts. Suddenly you get an extra trait!

-2 pop!
are you sure this one isn't giving you a "game over"?
oyzar Feb 12, 2008, 06:42 AM I have tried it several times and 1-2 = 1
cabert Feb 12, 2008, 06:46 AM I have tried it several times and 1-2 = 1
I just love civ maths...
I was unsure because in one game of FfH I used a pile of vampires to bring down the size of a conquered city, which resulted in a -2 size city:eek: . The city never got to size 1 again
oyzar Feb 12, 2008, 06:51 AM Hmm. We are starting to wander far offtopic but in ffh if you have the extra events options selected(at least in some old patches), every civ would get that event without fail(the health one), and if you got it in the first x turns of the game you were uber lucky. Why would you want to eat down a city past size 1 though? That doesn't give xp. Funny that it gave negative size, though probably a bug that should be reported. About ffh events, the best one got to be the one that gives a unit the hero promotion(one free xp per turn). This can often happen to a scout and that can eventually be upgraded to a druid for quite a killer unit.
fugazi Feb 12, 2008, 06:57 AM I got the legendary swordsmen event yesterday. I could choose between giving all my Praetorians City Raider 1 or Drill 1 haha - CR2 Praets right out of the door in every city, where do I sign up for that?!
Johan^^ Feb 12, 2008, 07:38 AM hehe got the shock promotion in a game with gilgamesh... strength 6 axemen :D
Groogaroo Feb 12, 2008, 08:22 AM Whenever I get these promotion events I always find them useless becuase I rarely have the units, I even once recieved the axe/shock event before I had access to any copper or iron.
Guess I'm just unlucky :(

It does apply to untis you build post-event though...
madscientist Feb 12, 2008, 09:04 AM I gotta agree with Cabor, that -25% inflation late in the game is one of the best.
Best in a military setting was when I played as Gandhi and got the shield promotion which allowed me to do an early rush attack against Mansa Musa. I let Boudica and Ghengis fight amongst themselves until I had a superior army and slapped both arround into submission. Something about these Indian leaders that brings out the war-monger in me!!
Groogaroo Feb 12, 2008, 09:25 AM It does apply to untis you build post-event though...
Seriously! Opps, never noticed.
Thanks!
Spikey1201 Feb 12, 2008, 01:35 PM I got the -25% inflation one once which won me the game. I was in a tight late-game race for the spaceship with Hannibal. Our empires were both huge (we had conquered or vassalized many civs between us) and all that extra money per turn let me use US to buy my way to the moon.
Xurr Feb 12, 2008, 02:09 PM I got the legendary swordsmen event yesterday. I could choose between giving all my Praetorians City Raider 1 or Drill 1 haha - CR2 Praets right out of the door in every city, where do I sign up for that?!
actually that is give all your swords CR1 or give all Melee Drill 1. If you choose the drill 1 your future macemen, pikemen etc will get it too.
ABigCivFan Feb 12, 2008, 03:15 PM Best Rnd events: not just event results but also the timing
1. +2 :health: to all cities
2. "old fool teaching" - Pay to get a free Academy in Capital.
3. Free shock/cover to melee right before an Axe rush
4. 25% inflation reduction mid-late game.
Some times it is good to keep a small amt of cash at hand to pay for nice random events.
Worst randam events:
1. I had a commerce city where I cottaged heavily along a flood plain river by a peak. I was struggling to keep up with the techs with the AIs and the peak (volcano) erupted and wiped out my 4 grown villages/towns!! 'WHAT THE ____"
2. Free drill I (Master Bowman) to a protective civ (is that possible)
Civman123 Feb 12, 2008, 03:50 PM I've actually gotten free city raider 1 for all swordsmen. And guess what? I was playing ROME!
omglazers Feb 12, 2008, 10:17 PM I just had an event that for TEN gold
TEN GOLD
TEN GOLD
in the STONE AGE
Revealed ALL the oil in the world to me.
:O :O :O:O :O :O:O :O :O:O :O :O:O :O :O It helped my plots and I was able to factor in such a forward resource way in the stone ages
NintendoTogepi Feb 12, 2008, 11:22 PM I got the -25% inflation one once which won me the game. I was in a tight late-game race for the spaceship with Hannibal. How'd that work? You can't rush buy spaceship parts.
Incan Emperor Feb 12, 2008, 11:54 PM How'd that work? You can't rush buy spaceship parts.
But you can rush observatories and labs to boost your research in the last stretch, same as factories and coal plants to boost production.
Also that allows him to build units in cities that where not production heavy for the sakes of protection, while he used his production heavy cities for the spaceship parts.

Oh yeah, I usually play OCC so I didn't think about it that way :D
Tatran Feb 13, 2008, 09:32 AM I had the 25% reduction on inflation.
That one is clearly awesome!
I fully agree. Others depend on the situation.
The march event sounds interesting, but playing peacefully probably a waste.
Harbourboy Feb 13, 2008, 11:56 AM I keep getting the one where my company invents a game called "CiviliZation", which either makes everyone happy, or gives you lots of money.
OTAKUjbski Feb 13, 2008, 03:20 PM I got the "golden age of musketeers"-quest as Suleyman. That was very fortunate, since I already intended to take advantage of the Janissaries. To top that, the quest had a special reward for owning the Taj Mahal, which I was just building. Ditto.
I had already been planning a GA+Taj Mahal 36-turn long Golden Age to fund a war against the score leader and his two Vassals when I got that quest.
Needless to say, I was thoroughly thrilled when I learned my Golden Age was being turned into a 54-turn "Platinum Age".
Because of the boosted :gp: production during it, I also popped another GA and GS which were burned to increase my Golden Age to 72 turns!
A full 10% of that game was a solid Golden Age! :king:
dragomaster Feb 14, 2008, 06:29 AM I got the free pinch promotion on my oromo warriors. Drill 1, 2 and pinch: heavy unit indeed.
Gooblah Feb 14, 2008, 08:09 AM I got The Truffles event on my Financial Capital, which was on a Plains Hill. It gave me a guaranteed 3F2H3C tile with additional benefit, since I was playing on Marathon! Then, I got (later) the Free GP event, where I could choose between a settled Great Prophet, Great Scientist, or Great Merchant, in my capital! It totally rocked.
Aside from that, the Horse Whisperer Quest. Finished it for 7 HAs, which were converted into Keshiks since I was playing as Mongolia...BURN!!!
CivMcNut Feb 15, 2008, 09:53 AM I remember I had one about some kind of election being close and they gave me a couple of really nice options for my courthouses everywhere. Since a courthouse is in nearly every city, that was a good one to have. I forget what the bonus exactly was though, maybe somebody else that's had it will remember.
Game I just played I got that cover promotion on all melee right before I launched an all out assault on my first victim. It made it a breeze to take out archers, my swordsmen wound up getting CRIII promotions and being useful until Muskets came around.
Having March for your entire set of Gunpowder would definately be a game changer. I've had that inflation one too, that was nice.
I like that one where you can increase an airport's happiness, that's pretty useful in the late game.

Probably was this one:Event142
Too Close To Call
Prereq: Universal Suffrage civic AND NATIONALISM or PRINTING_PRESS or EDUCATION or GUNPOWDER or ASTRONOMY
Obsolete: None
Active/Weight: 60/100
Result:
1.gain +1 gold for all courthouses
2.gain +3 culture for all courthouses
As usual ,credits to ori....
jkp1187 Feb 15, 2008, 11:11 AM My favorite (at least, the most entertaining) one so far has been the harbormaster quest. I got that in one game where I was playing as Hannibal on a Big and Small map, where I started on a really small island (could only fit five cities on the starting land). I chose the free combat 1 for all warships. That came in REAL handy in the late game, when Shaka and Cathy teamed up to try a naval invasion......
TriPp Feb 15, 2008, 01:20 PM The first was pretty nice. A choice between a free Military Instructor, Great Merchant or a Great Preist.
The second was a pleasant surprise. 30 gold for 3 pop is reasonable i guess. :)
EdiT*Off topic but i thought it was wierd that in this game every civ is researching communism and such and yet none of them even have gunpowder.
AnyKeyz Feb 16, 2008, 03:29 PM The most entertaining event I received was to locate a secret sacred mountain. To locate it, I had to build 10 religious buildings and settle to the bottom of the mountain. I remembered the bonus to be real cheap, but I enjoyed completing this quest
I love the inflation event, as well as the one who provide you with 8 mounted archerys, that can easily be converted to knights.
