View Full Version : 2008 CFC Fantasy MLB Thread
cubsfan6506 Sep 19, 2008, 02:38 PM We've got all winter to figure out the rookie thing, but keeper always sound like fun to me. Wouldn't the rule be if you qualify for rookie of the year then they are a rookie? I'm hungover and trying to put myself together to go to work, but that seems simple enough. though I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.
In baseball rookies don't play that prominant of a role and you rarely no when they're comeing up.
El Justo Sep 20, 2008, 09:47 AM i guess i should rephrase the rookie thing. what i'd imagine would be some type of developmental aspect be it a taxi squad, a small minor league roster, or a group of players w/ little MLB experience. it'd add a wrinkle into the long term aspect of a keeper league.
one idea that is intriguing to me would be to have a supplemental type draft in connecdtion w/ the June MLB Amateur draft. we could each take 1 guy or something like that and keep, say, 3 of them for free once we'd get 3 years in...of course, this is just brainstorming. but i think that the aspect of a keeper league, especially for baseball, would be to have some type of farm system or a couple of players, cap free, that we could stash away, watch them grow, and hopefully be able to use within a few years.
cubsfan6506 Sep 20, 2008, 11:12 AM I would say until they turn 25 would be fair.
King of Town Sep 22, 2008, 03:48 AM Picking people from the draft would be tough, are we just talking the 1st round or the entire draft? Is ther a fantasy service that might offer that? I think it would be cool with a keeper league. Of course then I'd have to wake up even earlier to do research.
cubsfan6506 Sep 22, 2008, 04:40 PM I think its rather stupid the championship is 13 days.
Lambert Simnel Sep 23, 2008, 02:00 AM Actually, I would have liked both the semi-finals and the final to be two weeks. This would seem better aligned with the 7 game ALCS, NLCS and World Series. I mean, during the league stage I'm happy enough to lose the equivalent of a 3 game series by just having a bad week, but, when it comes to the sudden death stage, I want to get properly beaten (as I'm sure the Bombers would have done to me :)), rather than just get bounced because of a couple of bad days.
Lambert Simnel Sep 28, 2008, 09:58 PM Well, congrats to BL and his Bombers. The final was pretty even, but your pitching gave you the edge. Worthy winners, IMHO.
I think I've managed to hold off Cubbie for 3rd place, and if so, I'll happily settle for that.
A good season, guys - I enjoyed it. And thanks to El J for stepping up as commish.
Backwards Logic Sep 29, 2008, 06:34 AM Thanks Lambert - pitching definitely gave me the edge, having practically 4 aces in the staff (Haren, Halladay, Oswalt, and Lester) with quality contributions from the other guys as well. And congrats to El Justo as well, not only from his team seemingly coming back from the dead to finish second, but also running the league this year. I had a lot of fun this year, and hopefully I'll be back next year to defend my title!
El Justo Sep 29, 2008, 10:09 AM a hearty congrats Mr. Logic :) well done, bud. your starting staff is what carried you. nice work
it was a great year. i agree :D i'll start to look over some other options for us next year and once the off season hits, i'll post some of my ideas and try to get some feedback. lots of good ideas from you guys...
King of Town Sep 30, 2008, 04:25 AM The more important question is who won the consolation bracket:)
Lambert Simnel Sep 30, 2008, 11:12 AM What consolation bracket ?
dgfred Sep 30, 2008, 01:12 PM We named Berserker the winner so he wouldn't blow a gasket :D .
El Justo Sep 30, 2008, 01:13 PM
cubsfan6506 Sep 30, 2008, 06:38 PM This was a great year I do have some regrets though. I am mad that I dropped Dempster and Alexei Ramirez.
Berzerker Sep 30, 2008, 08:47 PM We named Berserker the winner so he wouldn't blow a gasket :D .
I did win
the consolation bracket ;)
Please take yer football frustrations out in the appropriate thread :D

I was very glad you dumped both of them;) Not that it got me anywhere hahaha
Great season, looking forward to next year!
Lambert Simnel Oct 01, 2008, 06:08 AM This was a great year I do have some regrets though. I am mad that I dropped Dempster and Alexei Ramirez.
I dropped Chad Billingsley and Ryan Ludwick (the latter being my 24th round pick!). Oops....
Backwards Logic Oct 01, 2008, 08:29 AM Yea, I made some great moves and some dumb moves as well.
Dumb Move: Drafting Jimmy Rollins 2nd overall
Smart Move: Drafting Carlos Quentin 24th,
Dumb Move: Dropping Carlos Quentin after he wasn't hitting the first week
Smart Move: Trading Mark Reynolds and Aaron Cook for Carlos Quentin and Zach Greinke
Dumb Move: Dropping Jorge Cantu based solely on the fact he was hurting me in fielding %
Really Great Move: Trading Rafael Betancourt (with his 7.37 ERA) for Nate McClouth (at the time 5th in the league in Home Runs, Runs, and RBI. This trade proposal by me only happened because I had had too much to drink and thought it would be a funny thing to offer up, since Betancourt had just lost his closers job. The only thing going for me in this trade was McClouth was on the bench for him (how?!?) and he had just lost one of his bullpen arms. I was utterly shocked to see this one go through)
Really, Really Dumb Move: Using #4 waiver pick on Clayton Kershaw, then swinging him for John Smoltz right before he went down with season ending surgury
Smart Move to make me feel better: Picking up Mike Aviles
I'm sure there's others in the there that I didn't mention, but mostly are line-up decisions (which we've all done at some point, good and bad). Probably my best move overall was simply the way I drafted - most of my late round picks produced for me.
Lambert Simnel Oct 01, 2008, 11:02 AM Despite my bonehead drops, I did make a coupla smart moves as well.
Matt Kemp was a good 11th round draft pick.
Cliff Lee and John Danks were rather good Free Agent pick-ups. (Heh. Cliff Lee a FA. Not in the top 384 picks. Doubt that will be the case next year...)
cubsfan6506 Oct 01, 2008, 03:15 PM My good moves were
Drafting Hamilton, Soto, and Aubrey huff, Carlos Marmol and Kerry wood. I also do recall someone makeing fun of me for drafting Webb in the first round.
Picking up Theriot, and Lohse.
I also traded cano and wakefield for kaz matsui and Lincecum.
dgfred Oct 02, 2008, 08:48 AM I did win
the consolation bracket ;)
Please take yer football frustrations out in the appropriate thread :D
Hey good for you  . A loser can become a 'sort of winner' after all,
or was that a whinner???
Berzerker Oct 02, 2008, 06:57 PM You've been telling me to drop this and you keep posting insults and lies? The stench of your hypocrisy would repel starving vultures. Since you haven't noticed, I left the thread more than 2 weeks ago when Justo agreed to let me drop 2 players for the championship round and I said then I wouldn't play next year. I haven't complained about not making the top bracket, my only gripes have been about the rule changes. Now if you want me to drop this, stop kissing Justo's rear end and shut up. Seriously, that will work.
King of Town Oct 02, 2008, 07:21 PM My love for you is like a bezerker....do you want to make %#^& bezerker! Drop it man, we were all in the same boat when we started, you've got no argument.
Berzerker Oct 02, 2008, 08:20 PM KoT
I dropped it Sept 12th and its now October, Fred refused to drop it so I'm back defending myself. Now why are you jumping into this (and on my back) if you want it dropped? Why dont you tell Fred to drop it? Is he yer buddy? I'd like to drop it but I'm not gonna stay quiet while some ass kisser lies about me.
And everyone was not in the same boat when we began, people draft differently and the rule change nearly halved our ability to compete for saves and holds. Even Fred (and Justo) admitted it was a screw up... I just said so at the time and asked him to correct it and he refused. I certainly dont attribute my finish to that, it was never about me. It was about the integrity of the draft, you just dont change scoring positions after people draft. Thats a no brainer...
King of Town Oct 02, 2008, 08:36 PM You're right it's over. peace.
