View Full Version : Silly things you do while playing Civ

BARBEERIAN

Kinda lame but I'll admit anytime I get backstabbed by a powerful civ (Monty sending stacks of Jags vs. Infantry doesn't count), after I repel their advance and wipe their civ of the face of the earth I play the 1812 Overture in the background as a glorious tribute to my people's heroics!

What are some really silly things you do ingame?

I don't do anything silly other than avoiding war for most of my game, then go crazy trying to kick the computer's butt before I win via Diplomacy or Culture.

um... 1 time on a custome senario, i got so fustrated at the romans i went on worldbuilder and made a panther tank take their capital :P
it was killed the next turn by a archer after a paraid of units attacking it, got more fustrated and left.

I usaly just piss all the computers off by founding my own religion and being the only person with that for the entire game. When the rest of the world is budist. I try to spread it sometimes and i can usaly get half the world to be christian or some other late religion at the end of the game.

How about this: Researched a tech for the sole reason of hearing Leonard Nimoy say "beep, beep, beep."

Well... I lose some brains cells every session... because Civ is like crack for me and I can't stop the game.

Usually just plot fiendishly about destroying some stupid AI civ or two... "Oh no you didn't just build my wonder!".

If some AI beats me to a wonder I really want, I get mad and start planning an invasion of said-civ.

I like to give names to various landmarks, and I was very excited when I saw that this will be a game feature in Revolutions.

I did once mark-down (with a sign) a very important battlefield once... the only time in the game where my capital was in-danger of being lost, my forces made a "last-ditch" stand in a forest outside my city and turned the war around. I commemerated the occasion by naming the forest a national park battlefield memorial.

I swear out the AI sometimes, usually while flattening it with standard warmongering. I didn't think AI's could be gay, but they get called much worse than that in fact.

I also like doing somewhat unorthodox things with civs...like trying to get ghandi to take over the world, or making hatty shun religion and murder people barbarously.

Once, I actually made up names for every plot space. I actually spent two days before I got to turn two. It sucked because I got beat two turns before I finished researching iron working. Aggressive AI was in the on position and, well, time makes fools of us all.

I captured a really uber enemy capital, with wonders and a shrine and all, then razed it to the ground just to show those evil Indians my glorious power!

In the same campaign, I opened my invasion of the Indian provinces of Australia with a false invasion to the south of my landing parties. It was called 'deception force', and consisted of four explorers. Most of them were killed off by primitive Indian weapons, but one survived. So I honoured him by retiring him to Antartica! We take care of our generals...

Another hobby is instead of naming armies and invasion forces after greek letters (like 'delta force', or 'gamma sqaud'), I name them with Arabic letters. This led to the creation of the mighty 'hamzah force', the pillagers.

I also sometimes name ships, and once I went around naming landmarks...

Go into the strategy layers and draw arrows showing my troop movements, and naming Operations like:

Operation OLDTOWN: Amphibious Assault on Boston
Operation Wild West: Assaulting the western edge of the American continent

I also go into naval stacks and name Carrier Groups, Transport Convoys, etc.

What are some really silly things you do ingame?

Couple of things. I usually play as Saladin, but I change the name of the civilization to Crayonvania. Tee hee hee. Also, my cities tend to be named after scientists. If I capture a city in war, I rename it, but if I take it by means of the culture choke, I leave its original name out of respect for the original owners.

The naming of cities after scientists led to a bit of muppetry in my most recent game, which I lost by about five turns. I had a permanent alliance with Egypt, while another existed between China and Inca, so there ended up being a bit of a cold war going on.

I should have won this game, I had the space elevator to give my spaceship building a nice advantage, but still they beat me.

What I should have done is built the Manhattan Project and gone to war with the heathen alliance, but I didn't, because there was only one city that could have built the thing fast enough. And I just couldn't bring myself to build the Manhattan Project (and subsequent nukes) in a city I'd named after Carl Sagan. Just didn't seem right...

I know someone who still plays when the game ends because she is in a war and thinks it is "rude" to stop playing in the middle of a war. As if the AI actually cares...

As for me, I am sure there is something, but can't think of it right now. I'll be watching myself to see if there is anything though, because I'm interested.

Well, speaking of capuriing cities, in my current Next War game. I named new cities "Cornville" next to corn and "Deer City" next to deer and that Island that is in the Atlantic towards Europe and Africa I named "The Atlantic".

i also tend to build anything that takes 22 turns until built. that being my favorite number. even if i don't need said thing. there are rare instances like nukes that i will never build.

I wouldn't build Nuclear Weapons because I am anti Nuke; then when I got to Immortal level I realized that they helped a LOT!

Speaking of language, I really like how all the civilizations use their actual language/accents. Pretty cool. :D

The silliest thing that I do is assume that whatever my fiance is saying to me is less important than the trade I'm negotiating with Elizabeth. This is often followed by a gentle reminder such as a loss of power to the unit.

well, I play go-fetch with my dog while playing, doesn't matter if it's a ball or not, just take something and throw it, he'll bring it back and set it down by my chair and whine until I pick it up and throw it again

Besides getting mad at the RNG for doing things like making me lose my CRIII Maceman when I had 97.5% odds, when I'm playing as the Spanish (which is almost all the time), I sometimes name my cities after their surroundings, but in Spanish. For instance, I once named a city Riocaballo because it was by horses and a river.

I'm playing on a Terra map and ironicly when I went to settle on the new world I found a nice penninsula with oil off the shore, that was a Tundra hill terrain with some plains and grassland tiles and hills also surrounding it. It was also my first settler on the new world. So I named the city "Plymoth Rock". Looks just the real thing.

If my initial warrior survives the fog-busting and escort duties, then it get moved to the capital to become my "personal guard" and is never upgraded.

1) Find a city location with lost of grassland trees.

2) Nature preserves

3) National park

4) Spies. Lots of spies.

5) Name the city "The Farm" or "Sparrow School" or "MI-6".

6) surprise your foes with sudden influx of late-game espionage. Sabotage the Manhattan project for bonus points.

When I loose an important battle... i kicked my dog... JUST KIDDING!!!
Really though, I'll go on a tirade and talk to my dog's like their my advisors.

I will name units from time to time, place important markers, etc.

wolfshanze-
That's awesome! I mark major battles too, except now it's just the open battlefield battles. If I raze a city I'll marker it, but not if I keep it.

TyranusBonehead-
My standard poodle does the same thing to me. If you have a larger dog, they make footballs (american) out of tennis ball material. You can teach them to catch it like a pass and then yell "TOUCHDOWN!" HAHAHA

totally off topic........but surely the best line from that movie is when they are listening to the sermon on the mount and the guy mis hears "blessed are the peace makers" for "blessed are the cheese makers"

when he questions whats so special about the cheese makers some prophet looking guy replies "well obviously its not meant to be taken literally...it refers to manufacturers of ANY dairy product"
