try using nukes on them and see what happens.
in my experience, as soon as the UN is made no nukes is the usually first thing that is voted upon (if i havnt made it) and everyone votes yes, except maybe me and thats not enough to stop it
it was many civ's ago since i last used a nuke and after using it everyone hated me so if its still the same in this civ then the severe drop in friendship ratings with other civs would be a major put off

So far I have never seen AI using a nuke. I did it once and then regretted.
Global warming, have you heard about it?

Besides - it has really bad impact on your international relations. But the question is still open, if AI is ready to use nukes in some conditions?

Opposite to CIV 2 when the SDI Defense was the proper protection for
nukes landing on your best cities, in CIV 4 it is only 75% working. It
should make the leaders to think twice before pulling the trigger (or
better to say: push the button :))

Be glad that they're no nukes. Once begun, global warming begins, and there is no mechanism to slow or alter or stop GW. Your entire world will turn to desert fairly rapidly.

Never seen the AI use nukes in CIV4. Ever.

In my opinion, once they have access to nukes, they WILL use it (Prince and higher, same experience). ONE nuke wont be sufficient either, i've witnessed Civ's draining their entire nuclear arsenal on the same turn (20+ tactical and several ICBM's).

They dont hesitate, and they dont even care about the consequences. I've tried for my last two games to remove all access to Uranium for the AI, except for maybe a frozen island covered by ice and no other resources. That way, i can somewhat control that warfare is being done properly.

I've recently made the step up to playing on Immortal (Epic speed) and have turned off the diplo victory. The AI has used nukes in every game (except my current one and that's only cuz no one has built Manhattan yet-most of the other civs are just getting that tech). They do use them against me and others-esp when someone is closing in on one of the victory conditions. Not only does that hurt you if you don't have SDI, but then the global warming kills several good tiles of your main production cities...so its a two pronged attack against you-made even worse if you nuke back.

Hannibal seems to love nukes in any of the games I play. Thats if he can build them before they get outlawed. I just play on noble. He nukes the snot out of everyone.

Hell I am pretty sure I have even seen the AI crack the Earths core in the next war mod. Come to think of it... it was even hannibal. lol

I started a game in Modern era with the Next War mod in place. I sicced Tokugawa on Hammurabi, and he fired off a couple ICBMs at Darius, Hammurabi's colony-vassal. Of course peace broke out a few turns later, but I got what I wanted -- Toku voided his 5 defensive pacts by declaring war, leaving Napoleon (founder of Sid's Sushi, which was spread to all my cities) all alone.

In a recent OCC game Mansa nuked Shaka after I bribed Mansa to attack him. It made my grassland horses into desert. =(

But yeah, in my experience it's been pretty rare. I don't think i've ever been nuked, even when i win most of my games by domination.

has anyone used nukes on barbarians? and does it make you lose diplomacy points with AI?

After my last experience I promised to myself not to use nukes anymore. But I still find it necessary to have a nice stack of ICMBs and tactical waiting just in case. I hope that will restrain AI to use them against me.

However in Poland we say: "Hope is the Mother of Stupid" ;)

The worst thing happens is GW. It just kills your cities.

I was playing a game with a mate of mine where we had about 6 AI civs. I was well ahead with a huge modern army & was just trying to get the biggest most powerful civ ever in the history of the world. My mate was in a long, bloody & desperate battle against the AI to get the Oil from their continent. To spice the war up, I would occasionally gift him or the AI some new dangerous knowledge or army - of course, my friend only knew about the stuff he was getting & didn't realise I was being a 2 faced b@stard. It was great. Then I stuck a some tactical nukes on to a couple of subs. I gave one to my friend, & one to the AI. The computer actually made the first strike!

AI will vote against Nukes ban if they are in or planning to go to war ( especially if they are aiming a dom/Conquest victory )... and I assure you that they use nukes ( my SS wins normally have a nice fireworks, courtesy of a AI ( normally Zara ) that was planning to win by Dom and sees me making 5/6 SS parts out of the blue ( I normally time the SS buildup for that ,to give less time for the AI to plan and execute a raiding party to my capitol.... ) and launching a SS under his nose.... )

I've used nukes on large barb cities. The other civs seem quite happy to have them turned into a glass waste land (I just had to tryout the guided missle crusier after all). No 'hit' on the diplo points!
