View Full Version : Poll: what other kinds of game do you play?

I think this idea is so obvious somebody had to have it posted before but I could not find it. I was just wondering: are there non-gamers who play just Civ or everybody here play other kinds of game as well? Are all Civ players adept, as me, of serious, adult, artsy games or do they have nothing against no-brainers guilty pleasures?

Well, let me state my apologies to the English Grammar for the "WHAT", not "WHICH" other kinds of games. By the way, my option is "anything adult". I don't want to reprise my early gaming experience playing camembertish Double Dragon clones. So I play whatever makes a little sense to me, at least aesthetically. My recent favorites, besides Civ: Bioshock, Stalker, Assassin's Creed, Silent Hill (this not a "recent" fav) and Civ's main rival.

Right now I play a lot of Team Fortress 2 and Point of Existence 2 (a mod for Battlefield 2).

I love multiplayer games, first person shooters, and strategy games. I used to play a lot of adventure games but don't play nearly as many anymore.

Mostly RPGs - single player and sometimes a MMO when it's first released (or with a new expansion). I would play MMOs more often, if they didn't suck your life away.

I don't see a related option, so I didn't vote.

Sorry, I missed that possibility. I have thought the options based on their relationship on why would you play Civ. I play Strat-o-Matic Baseball, the Hoyle card games (when I only have a few minutes), and chess (ICC). I guess that would basically make me a non-gamer as the other games don't necessarily need a computer to play them. Though, playing an entire season of Strat without the help of the computer is very tedious. I know, I tried when I was younger and it was still just a dice and card game.

I play a bit of FPS, RPG, other types of strategy, action, adventure, simulation, board games, card games... Anything that's good, basically - though, I'm more and more turning into a crotchity old gamer these days and just playing my primary genres. Civ is my most played game of the past two years, by a long shot.

Oh, also, I from time to time dabble in early-release MMORPGs... Before they get quantified and strategy-guided to death, and there is still a bit of a sense of wonder and exploration, they're fun. After that? One job is enough, thanks.

Gamer in the broadest sense: card games, board games, strategy games, shoot-em-ups, sports games...pretty much everything excluding fantasy-type role-playing games.

As pathetic as it sounds, I'm probably happiest when playing games...a nice interlude to the mindless tedium and hopeless desperation of reality :D .

As for RPGs, I've played and liked Fable for it's humorous, adult content. But all of that anachronism breaks the game atmosphere a little bit.

<deleted> I play hao, call of duty 4, fifa, ncaa and madden football. I also played assassins creed and stuff.

This is the only game I play on the PC now that my CS cd is gone. That was the best online game ever.

I play CIV. Sometimes I play Sid's Pirates! when I need a change.

I've bought other computer strategy games, but never got too invested and don't play them any more.

I still like board games, but haven't played any in years.

Zelda Twilight Princess is awesome too!!!

I love games in a broad spectrum. Strategy is my main addiction, going back and forth between Sid Meier titles and Paradox titles. At the moment it's BtS every spare second I can, but half a year ago it was mostly Europa Universalis III. Too bad time doesn't allow for much gaming these days when family takes the foremost position in life.

Other than strategy I quite enjoy "survival horror" games like Res Evil, Silent Hill etc. Just because it's something that my wife enjoys as well. She loves to watch and be scared and doesn't want to touch the controller so I can play and still spend time with my wife ;)

I had a period of serious CS addiction a long time ago and still finds it funny from time to time and some other (now ancient) MORPGs (remember Diablo II anyone?) but serious online gaming is a thing of the past for me, time just doesn't allow it. So, no WoW and the likes for me...

When I'm not civving it I'm playing Counter-Strike Source; Football Manager 2008; Pro Evolution Soccer '08 or Call of Duty 4, last two for the PS3.

Also have a soft spot Final Fantasy games even though I've not completed one since FF VIII.

Oblivion and Civ are my console and PC time-shredders.
Once in a great while, I'll dabble in other console games, but those games account for less than 5% of my gaming time.

In the past I've played FPS's like Doom, Doom2, Quake and Quake2, I then went to roleplaying with the Diablo franchise, then into Starcraft, Warcraft III, Age of Empires, Civ III, then Civ4. However, now I prefer almost exclusively strategy games. I'll play RTS, but I'm hooked on Civ.

I've played cardgames like Magic, Star Wars and (gasp) some Pokemon. Played quite a bit of chess, and am going to start on a tabletop role playing game soon, called Legend of the 5 Rings.

In the future, I'm planning on playing CivRev, and Spore.

I'm really varied.

A mere look at my favorite games shows a large mixture of different genres. CIV isn't even my favorite game, or in my top 10

I'm a big fan of simulation games, like Black & White, SimCity, The Sims...I also really like Mario games, and The Legend of Zelda games. (particularly Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, both are in my top 3 favorite games!)

Sometimes I enjoy FPSs, like Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2 or BioShock...

Really, my tastes are quite varied.

Strategy, mostly. Sometimes a FPS of some sort, or atleast something bloody. But it's gotta be Strategy's my poison, as a general rule of thumb.

I have to say I'm with the varied interests category as well.. Here's a short list of games I've been playing at one point or another:

Arcade: Tekken, Soul Calibur, any variation of Marvel/Capcom/SNK, DDR, Guitar/Percussion Freak

Board Games: Chess, Scrabble, Monopoly! :crazyeye:

Card Games: Poker, Magic: The Gathering, Legend of the Five Rings, heck even Pokemon and Yugi-Oh!

First Person Shooters: Doom and Half-Life titles

Role Playing Games: Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, Ragnarok (flunked a semester playing this MMORPG so I forbade myself from ever playing one again) :(

Strategy Games: Civ is the only turn-based game I play as I grew up on RTS games from both Command & Conquer and Warcraft titles.

Looking at the poll options, apparantly board games don't count, so I guess I have to say I'm not into games anymore.

If me and my computer are both available at the same time, I'll play Civ. I wouldn't mind playing other video games, but if I were playing something else, that would mean I would be missing an opportunity to play Civ, and that would be silly. If I have a chance to play on my computer, why *wouldn't* I play Civ?

On computer besides Civ its RPG (Oblivion, Morrowind, NWN1&2), strategy (the Europa Universalis series, Crusader Kings, SMAC, Colonisation, Chariots of War), King of Dragon Pass (which is strategy with RP elements), city builder games, Pirates, Railroad Tycoon (anything Sid has had a hand in has been quality in my experience, I even enjoyed his golf game although I hate golf)

Off computer its RPGs, strategy games (particularly ancient, medeval and Napoleonic) and board games in general (Die Macher and Puerto Rico are current favourites)

Civ IV-BTS is my mainstay. I also play Gal Civ 2 when I'm in a sci-fi mood. I've been at itsyourturn since '99, where I play simpler games like battleship, pente, backgammon, etc. My wife was severely addicted to WoW. I've taken over her account and checked out the game. I've found it enjoyable, but not as addictive to me as it was to her. Got to be turn-based for me.

In this order:

JRPGs
Civ
Online FPSes
Other 4x games

I need to specify JRPGs and Online FPSs because if I just say RPGs and FPSs, that would be interpreted to include WRPGs and single player FPSs, both worthless genres (though there used to be good WRPGs)

Until ten years ago I played a lot of boardgames (Favourites: World in Flames, Advanced Third Reich, Europa Series, Advanced Squad Leader, Marshall's Napoleonic, Republic of Rome, 1830, Diplomacy, Terrible Swift Sword, Wooden ships & iron men, SPQR, Guns of August, War & Peace...),
I played competitive Chess in tournament.
Now I'm married with two children and I must play only with PC, I prefer the computer versions of old boardgames, CIV series, GalCiv II, Paradox Games (HOI II Doomsday, EU III, Victoria), Rome Total war, Caesar III and obviously I'm patiently waiting for the PC version of World in Flames...

A friend and I are always making stupid Neverwinter Nights modules for each other to play, and I have to go back for the occasional Football Manager fix (if only to remind myself of how horribly addicted I was in the past).

I also play Worms Armageddon on the PS2 with my friends when we're suitably refreshed (that is, when we've been drinking), Scrabble (the board game) with the wife (she usually kicks my arse), and I recently spent two weeks becoming an expert at Mario Kart on the N64 whilst stuck in a recording studio with nothing else to do.

Mostly civ, though. ;)

I'll play pretty much any genre. That doesn't mean I'm not picky, though I do prefer games with a lot of randomness, and hence replayability. I tend to feel cheated with games that are only fun for a single playthrough (with exceptions, of course.)

At the moment I'm alternating between BtS and Hellgate: London. There's nothing like slaughtering a couple hundred demons to blow of that steam from having the AI you've been warring with for centuries suddenly vassalize to your best friend and trading partner

Lately I've been having an itch to play some Frontier: First Encounters as well (as I do every couple of years). Other recurring addictions include Diablo II and Worms Armageddon.

Does any of you know an online game which is similar to sports simulator (i.e. one serious event a week, so it does not force you to login more than once, but when you are logged on you can think of your strategy, tactics, etc for hours), but instead of sports there are really battles and you kind of rule your nation or castle?
If you know, please tell me, I would love to play such.

My only real option was selecting option 2. (Although this conclusion of why I play civ is far off base. As this is an aspect of Civ 4 I dispise.) I play Strategy, Racing, FPSs, Simulations, RPGs, Action/Adventure, and puzzles too - although, not as often as the others. I don't get excited about every game on the market though, as usually each class has its bests as well as titles that are a downright shame. I must say though that strategy and simulation are my favorite out of all of these. But it seems like such small corner of the video game market that you almost have to venture out and enjoy the other aspects of gaming or suffer through some pretty lame attempts at these two just for another game to play.

Magic the Gathering Online and Icewind Dale II are the only others I play. I bought Lemmings and Railroad Tycoon 3 a while ago but neither kept me going. RRT was too ...boring and Lemmings annoyed me when I got stuck and couldn't just skip levels by using a code - the Windows version "unlocks" levels as you progress so you can't cheat :(.

Basically I enjoy anything where there is a slower pace and more thinking than doing. IWDII is a favourite because I enjoyed the other Baldur's Gate series games and prefer not to deal with 3D (the only exception being Civ IV and even then the game is slightly rickety when there's a lot happening). Anything that has lasting value.

You might try out NeverWinter Nights Crowqueen if you havent already. It is 3D but it run along the same playstyle as the BG series. It just has a "Tomb Raider" view set by default, but you can zoom out and rotate the camera as if using the IWD setup. (I only played IWD1). But I liked the epic charactor classes that came in on NWN. Havent tried NWN2 yet. Civ 4 owns 1/4 of my crappy HD after all my mods are put on. So I have to be selective.

I'm very much into sports strategy simulations. Front Office Football 2007 (http://www.solecismic.com/fof/index.php) is my favorite one. I've run a fansite (http://fof.sportplanet.gamespy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=33) for that one for five years or so now, where FOF2K7 as well as other games in that genre are discussed. (There are a number of Civvers over there as well.)
