I'm looking to start a vanilla game of Civ 4 with 4-6 people. I leave all options open for discussion. If you would like to join, please sign up in this thread. If you have any strong opinions for the game (map size, sea level, starting age, etc.) please post those as well.

*****EDIT******

We have 6 players and time zones have been given

Players:
jbieksha: Qin or Toki (which do you want more)
me: random
SV110MMH: Ceasar
kneark: Mongols (Kublai)
Gilgamesh9999: Alexander
Ankka:random

Map Info
Size: Small
Type: Continents
all other map options random, all victory conditions

Hey, I'll jump on.

I live in California (for time-coordinating purposes) and do not really have many preferences for what type of game this becomes, other than that I would like to play as either the Koreans, or a Spiritual race.

Ankka

I'm in.

I suggest 4 humans on a tiny continents map, starting age ancient or classical.

That makes it a little crowded, but makes the game shorter and more happens more quickly, which makes the game more enjoyable, since pbem's are rather slow.

I don't have any specific request for my civilization, make it random. ;)

Oh, and my timezone is GMT +0430, I think. email ankka603 att gmail dott com

Gilgamesh9999

I'd like to join. Timezone is GMT+1, civilization I'd like to play is Greeks, if that's not possible, then English.

kneark
Feb 29, 2008, 11:20 PM
I like the idea of having a map that is a little crowded, and if we are planning on following that plan and if there are no objections to any of the requests that have been made and the people who have joined then we should have the four people necessary right here, right?

Let's make the map small instead of tiny. Hopefully we will get a 6th player before I set up the game.

Let's discuss other options:
Sea Level:
Victory Conditions
Speed
Starting Era

If there are any other options you feel strongly about, let me know.

Gilgamesh9999
Mar 01, 2008, 08:50 AM
How about: Ancient, normal speed, low sea level, any victory type possible

I'd suggest all default, but I'll accept anything.

Do make sure that the player order and timezones match sanely when making the game, please.

What map script are you going to use? Continents or pangaea? Pangaea would propably be the most interesting, as everyone should be able to fight everyone.

Oh, BTW, do you guys play the GOTM? Because it affects a DLL file, and everyone should have the same one.

Got your private message. I'm involved in a smalled pbem already but would love to get involved in a bigger one. I would pick random or perhaps Saladin as my leader. Sign me up it's not to late! My time zone is GMT -6 (Minnesota - CST).

P.S. I would choose all defaults, ffa - no teams to start with! AI? I might add one or two hard AI so that us humans may have a common enemy if it works out that way. Map type? Make that random as well.

jbieksha

If still holding for a 6th, I am game.

I am GMT +5 (New Jersey) I'd like to play Qin or Toku.

6 is quite many.. we propably won't get to 1 turn/day with so many players, and the game will last ages. Although it isn't my decision, this is my opinion.

And New Jersey is GMT -5, isn't it?

P.S. I would choose all defaults, ffa - no teams to start with! AI? I might add one or two hard AI so that us humans may have a common enemy if it works out that way. Map type? Make that random as well.

Yeah, no teams.. I wouldn't put an AI in as it might mess up the gameplay... human vs human only is nicer.

I like the idea of random map everything, it makes the game a little harder at the start. :)

No GOTM-ing here.

As for the starting era and other options, I have no preferences that would make me want to quit or anything so whatever you guys want is fine.

Time Zone order:

jbieksha: -5 GMT
bamf226, DocHammoc : -6 GMT
kneark: -8 GMT
gilgamesh9999: +1GMT
Ankka: +430 GMT

Does it make sense to start with Ankka or jbieksha? Ankka originally suggested continents, so that's where we start. I have no problem randomizing the map and using defaults for everything else.

As for leaders here is what we have:
jbieksha: Qin or Toki (which do you want more)
me: random
DocHammoc: random
kneark: Wang Kon
Gilgamesh9999: Alexander
Ankka:random

send me a PM with your e-mail addresses so I can distribute

kneark
Mar 01, 2008, 11:11 PM
Ooooh, that is unfortunate...

I'll take the Mongols with Kublai Khan in that case, even though I said I would go with a Spiritual leader otherwise =).

Anyway, sent bamf226 a PM with my e-mail.

jbieksha: -5 GMT
bamf226, DocHammoc : -6 GMT
kneark: -8 GMT
gilgamesh9999: +1GMT
Ankka: +430 GMT

Does it make sense to start with Ankka or jbieksha?

The starting player shouldn't matter, but the timezone-based playing order should be

Ankka
gilgamesh
jbieksha
bamf/DocHammoc (order doesn't really matter)

And I hope everyone realises this game won't end in a week or two, this'll take at least three months with 6 players.

Sorry, I had a spot for you, but I got info from jbieksa first.

No worries. Was bad of me to think I could join anyway, I am going away on short holiday (no email for 4 days) end of next week, which would have certainly peed the lot of you off.

And I hope everyone realises this game won't end in a week or two, this'll take at least three months with 6 players.

Yeah, not to mention the possibility of having someone suddenly decide to not care about the game or just leave because they're losing. Then again, it's not like it's a huge commitment to play just a single turn of Civ4 a day for a game you don't care about anymore...but yea, I'll shut up now. :crazyeye:

Ankka
Mar 02, 2008, 08:24 AM
kneark: I was just warning people since many seem to think multiplayer is as fast as single player, and PBEM is really it's own story in slowness, I wouldn't like to start playing with 6 people of whom suddenly 2 or 3 decide they don't want to play.

bamf226
Mar 02, 2008, 03:38 PM
Is there anyone not planning to take their turn during the evening hours of their time zone? I plan to take mine during the afternoons, so I'm going to put myself ahead of jbieksha. If anyone else in the states is planning on playing in the afternoon or morning, please let me know so I can reorganize the play list.

email address sent, and time of day I normally play.

Seeing nobody picked China, I'll take Qin.

+5, -5, depends what TV science show you are watching. I mean National Geographic and PBS NOVA should know which way the earth rotates right?

I just finished a game: 5 players 13 months. Also had 2 die due to lack of interest even before any wars got started.

Mar 03, 2008, 04:28 AM
good luck to all of you!
I think 6 players is to much and will take to much time to finish. So that's why i didn't sign in. Maybe i'll start a smaller game with only 3 or 4.

but now and then, i'll check out how thinks are going with you and lurk on this thread.

civ on!

I will either post here, or respond to the email letting you know I have it (or played and sent). You you don't see anything in 48 hours, please resend the file.

Sorry for the confusion. I didn't realize until after I had sent out the file that what I thought was turn order was instead team affiliation. No one is on a team, but since I started the game, I was forced to take the first move. SV is correct. I move to the top. Ankka should get the file around 7:00 PM local time or perhaps even earlier in the afternoon if I receive the file soon enough after SV.

It will probably help if everyone changes their name in game to their forum name so that the Save file will say who to send it to.

You guys have undertaken a very ambitious pbem. 6 players is quite a lot of links in the chain, and links get broken pretty easily.

I suggest that you all abide by a rule that you post in this thread once you have emailed the save to the next player. Without that, it can literally take days to figure out who has which save.

Also, if anyone password protects their civ (everyone should, to prevent accidental espionage), the game admin should be told the password so the game doesn't die if that person goes absent without explanation.

[/ my two cents]

My reply on the 18th was a GPS. I should have been clear to tell you that would be my Acknowledgement I Got the file, Played my turn, and Sent the file.

I forget my communication rules evey so often.

Oh wow then in that case the last five or six posts were my fault. I did not realize what was meant by "GPS" and thought that jbiek was requesting that I sent the turn again. When I did, he thought that I had already played 3840 and had just sent 3880 twice in my own confusion. That in turn caused my last post and the whole thing. Sorry. In any case, I received, played, and sent out 3840 BC just now.

Yes.

:old: Patience.

..and communication ;)

If you know you're going to be unable to play the save for a couple of days, mention it in this thread, and then everyone will understand the delay and not get too hot under the collar about it. If you fail mention an impending delay, then everyone will be annoyed with you :crazyeye:

Again, this is just some friendly advice from someone who plays pbem almost exclusively :)

I am the one that slows down on the weekends. I am very quiet Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes I can seank a turn or two.

I do not remember any warnings from kneark other than he does have a life.

Keep in mind this is a big weekend for the Christian faith. That may play into it as well. (I do not know if kneark practices or not)

jbieksha
Mar 25, 2008, 08:14 AM
Ankaa - The no tech trading was an original option. None of us complained so he kept it that way.

Gilamesh - Need writing in Civ-4 before you can cross borders. Since we're humans, its up to us to by pass that rule or not. Depends how trusting your are having military passing by your undefended capital or not.

Speaking of which - I've found that people are quiet until they meet within the game. Then emails, posts and private messages can be ued for the 2 Civs to talk (by the way, did you get my messages?).

Gilgamesh9999

why on earth did you check "no technology trading" in the options?

In talking to other players, most people have it checked to promote competitive play. Trading techs practically forces everyone to trade in order to compete.

We are already seeing that some people are right on top of each other. If those neighbors were to start trading techs before the rest of us have even met another civ, that provides those two neighbors an enormous advantage.

Yup I did, nice bluff, had me seeing red for a while.

The people that spoke up wanted a small map. I actually upped the size a level since there were 6 people.

Ankka

I like the map.

I didn't know humans could trade techs before alpha, though, if it is so, I do support the no trading - rule.

I am concerned now that I haven't seen a turn all week. Can anyone shed some light on the delay?

Ankka
Apr 09, 2008, 09:59 AM
I don't know, but I have indeed noticed that the game is pretty dead.

I guess we have too many players, it increases the possibility of getting stalled.

bamf226
Apr 09, 2008, 11:41 AM

No reason to give up hope. I sent 3720 BC to SV on Sunday April 6th. I was out of commission the whole weekend. With this many players, I set my expectations at 2 turns per week. Give or take based on timings and habits.

Apr 14, 2008, 09:05 AM
I hope not, but once the save file leaves me I have no control. based on previous posts from everyone else, it seems like Gilgamesh is unable to play as frequently as the rest of us. Ankka, kneark, jbieksha, and SV all seem to post the movement of the file within 24 hours barring a computer problem.

Ankka
Apr 15, 2008, 01:09 PM
Yes it does seem like one person is making the game... stall.

If this game soon won't start rolling, I'll quit, I see no point in playing a game where the end is reachable in maybe 10 years.

bamf226
Apr 15, 2008, 01:16 PM
Kneark, have you seen the latest turn that was sent? Gilgamesh, did you get the file Ankka sent? Ankka, rather than seeing you quit, I'd rather find a suitable replacement for the person that is unable to play so that the game can move along. If you leave we have two spots to fill rather than one.

kneark
Apr 15, 2008, 06:04 PM
I have not seen a file since I sent mine out to jbieksha....

Ankka reported it being sent out so that says to me that either Gilgamesh has it and has not played or has for some reason been unable to send it to me.

jbieksha
Apr 15, 2008, 06:21 PM
I guess I should have taken him out when I had the chance. Oh Well.

TO make sure I am not the culprit. I sent the last turn 3860 to SV on April 9th.

Ankka
Apr 16, 2008, 09:59 AM

bamf226

SV110MHH

bamf226
Apr 17, 2008, 08:43 AM

If there is no pass, I'll take him out. I know where is captial is. I am not far away. We just agreed on some non vilence pacts for a while. He doesn't have any defense either.

If no objections we can go that route.

bamf226

taking him out without him at least trying to fight back would give you an unfair advantage, in my opinion.

2 things. He did have defence. BUT if the city is just razed, it would be no special advantage, now would it?

And if it would, we can just team up on him and take him out too. ;)

jbieksha

Korlinga, did you get 3280 BC? Is Ankka on vacation? I don't remember him saying he would be out of pocket

On more serious matters, I will be travelling approximately for one week, from the 14th of this month onward. I am not sure of my internet possibilities, if I get internet for just a couple of minutes I'll be able to play on my laptop, but I might not get the chance.

bamf... read my posts. ;)

I do not have a connection on which I can play, sorry.

I have not seen the file since Ankka restarted on Tuesday. jbieksha, did you receive the file from korlinga? If so, did you play send?

As a reminder I'm out of town beginning Saturday through the end of the month. I will not have access to play. If I get the file before bedtime tonight, I'll play and send it on.
