View Full Version : Installing a New Civilization?
Matthew5117 Mar 03, 2008, 04:38 PM What the steps to install a new civilization? I know I downloaded one, the Deluxe Canada Mod. Please forgive me as I don't know much computer words such as upzip (this is why I have to post my own thread).
Oh, I forgot, steps for the MAC.
Also, I can't do the shift trick as it does something else. Is there anyone that has any suggestions?
I would really appreciate if someone could help me or at least give me one suggestion because right now I am really confused as to what I do to install my downloaded civilization and that is making me a little frustrated if any of you care.
AlanH Mar 03, 2008, 05:21 PM Welcome to the forum. 15 minutes is nowhere near enough time for anyone here to respond! Most of us have real lives and families. I merged your four posts :)
Concerning your questions:
1. The Canada Mod de luxe edition comes as a compressed file, but it uses .7z format instead of the more usual .zip format, and Mac OS X cannot expand that format without some help. You will need to download an application called EZ 7z - use Google to find it. Double click that to install it on your Mac.
Then double click EZ 7z to run it, and drop the Canada Mod .7z file onto its window. A rather scary Terminal window will open showing the progress as the file is expanded. At the end of it you should have a folder in the same place as the original downloaded file.
You then need to put the Canada mod folder into your <user name>/Documents/Civilization IV/Mods/ folder and perform some surgery on it to fix a few problems that make it incompatible with the Mac version. You will find the changes, along with the modified files that you need, described in this thread. Come back if you need more help, but please be a little patient.
2. I don't know what the "shift trick" is  Please explain the question.
Matthew5117 Mar 03, 2008, 06:57 PM Oh I am sorry, I am new to this and I didn't how things worked around here. You are right, all of us have real lives and families, again, my apologies.
Thank you very much for the steps however, the shift trick I am talking about is when you open Civilization 4, you can hold on shift to clear your cache, I am not really sure what it means.
By the way, I didn't know you could merge all your posts, if I did, I would've done that.
Everything looks good however what change am I supposed to do with the file that I formated with the terminal program (I will try to be more patient this time)?
(How do you merge?)
AlanH Mar 04, 2008, 03:24 AM The cache is supposed to store an expanded copy of some files from your Civ4/Assets/ folder. I have never bothered with the Shift trick to empty the cache. Mods usually load "Uncached", so you woudl only ever need to empty the cache if you are making changes to the basic Civ4 assets, which should never happen unless you really know what you are doing.
You need to download the three files I provided in the other thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5673344#post5673344). They are here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=155736&d=1184343905). Expand the downloaded file by double clicking it. Put them in the FOLDER created by EZ 7z, in the locations I listed in the other thread. (I assume that's what you mean by "the file I formated with the terminal..."). The FOLDER created by EZ 7z should be moved to ~/Documents/Civilization IV/Mods/, where '~/' means the FOLDER with your user name and a little house icon - your Home Folder
Then launch Civ4, click Advanced in the main menu, click "Load a Mod" and select the Canada Mod. The game will relaunch to load the mod, and you should see it load up with no errors ... if you have done what I have said, and I have said what I mean :p
Merging posts is probably only available to moderators. Use edit post to add to your post rather than making a new one. But don't edit posts older than a few hours, as people might have read the first version and not come back to read it again.
Matthew5117 Mar 04, 2008, 08:17 PM ...Does this also work with War Lords as I now have it or do I have to download the War Lords version?
AlanH Mar 05, 2008, 03:35 AM No problem. I'm pleased that we sorted your problems out.
You need the Warlords version of the mod for Warlords, and you need the Warlords versions of the three changed files that I provided in a different post in the other thread.
The procedures are identical, except that you have to put the mod in ~/Documents/Civilization IV Warlords/Mods/.
Matthew5117 Mar 05, 2008, 07:16 AM Ok, thank you once again, but what is the other thread that has the different three files for Warlords because I have the expansion pack now?
And hopefully this will be the last question... the folder that EZ 7z created isn't a folder meaning that I can't put the other three files in the folder. So how do you make the Canada Mod (not the three files) a folder?
AlanH Mar 05, 2008, 12:29 PM There is only one other thread where I've posted information about the Canada Mod, as far as I know. It is 5673344, and I gave the link to it in post #4 above. There are separate posts in that thread where I linked the edited Warlords files and the edited files for the Vanilla/basic version of Civ4.
Your second question worries me. I understood from your previous post that you had got the Canada Mod working, but that clearly cannot be the case if you haven't even found the expanded Canada Mod folder yet! Let's try this again ...
When you double click EZ 7z you should get a small window with a document image on the left under which there is a caption saying, "Drag a file or folder here". On the right it should have a space for a file name, a drop down menu which should say 'Decompress', and a button saying 'GO!'.
Drag the downloaded .7z file onto the EZ 7z window. That should put its name into the file name space on the right. Then click 'GO!'. That should open a "Choose a Folder" window where you select where you want the Canada Mod Folder to be created. Choose a location that you can find later, such as your Desktop folder, or Documents, and click Choose. That should run the terminal window showing progress. When it is all finished the terminal window should say "Everything is Ok", and you should have a folder called Canada Mod in the place you chose. If you still can't see a Canada Mod folder then try using Spotlight to find it.
Matthew5117 Mar 05, 2008, 02:41 PM First, I found a fault so far, I compressed the file, rather than decompressed which it should have been.
I will try again.
I misunderstood what you meant about the other thread, I will look there again for the Warlords version.
Update: One step forward... now I got past that but now... (oh no not another problem) the xml problem thingy shows up... I am gonna look in the other thread to see if anyone mentioned the same problem that happened to me.
Update: Jackpot! I have exactly the same problem one guy mentioned about the info, then the units and finally the barbarians. Then you (AlanH) came along and talked about three files, the same three files I was supposed to put in the folder I created with EZ 7z (is that not correct?) but you said to replace these three files with the assets you mentioned in the civilization 4 warlords documents. Am I supposed to do that (hang on, I might as well try to fix my own problems for once, right?)? I will try to replace the files with the three you said to.
Update (once again): YES! It worked! I replaced the three files with the ones you created and it worked! Next time (let's hope there won't be), I will first learn a little about xml's and all that before I go around annoying people.
Update: What are you supposed to do for a pre-made map, Just the same thing, unzipping it and putting it in the Mods Folder in my documents containing the Civilization 4 Warlords or is there a different folder your supposed to use (the file I am using is http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=156907)?
