View Full Version : Indus River
Theodorick Mar 04, 2008, 11:42 AM Is there any reason why the Indus River mouth is all unsettleable marshland and jungle? That area is one of the original centers of civilization in the ancient world, and was important to history in the entire area. It's also one of the most heavily populated areas in the world today, as it was in ancient times, but you'd be lucky to find size 2 city there by the year 2000 in game, after some jungle has been cleared. In the real world that area isn't even all marshland and jungle, but mostly desert/plains, TEMPERATE forest, floodplain, and hills. Was this done for game balance, or just has never been brought up?
ADP101 Mar 04, 2008, 12:18 PM i actually have to agree Indus river was one of the most populated places in ancient indian history there shouldnt be marshes there
Śmarth Mar 04, 2008, 01:39 PM Yes I agree. Looking at it from a historical perspective I'd say there's even a case for India starting there, although that would have a large impact on the gameplay vis-a-vis Persia I expect.
kairob Mar 04, 2008, 02:03 PM I also agree the should be room for a populus city at its mouth.
(mostly so when I play as Arabia I have can use Pakistan is my Eastern Border. ;))

Actually the mouths of the indus are swampy, clay-filled and, infertile - Karachi is actually a little down the coast and supported by food imports from up-river. The upper Indus is very fertile, and the singh plains quite fertile, but the mouths are crap.
@Theodorick, the Indus mouths today are different from the coast line several thosuand years ago, being some 200 km further south. The indus civilisation was centred on the middle indus and Gujarat, having smaller presence on the indus mouths. Finally birth-place of civilisation does not equal fertility, just that its easier to start out there.
Personally I agree that there should be some wheat or something in Sindh, but major changes aren't justified.

Seconded. India could use just a slight boost there.

I said 'isn't even all marshland and jungle' There is some dense marshland there, especially around the mouth--as is with the nile, and most major rivers--but I don't think there's enough to justify making the majority of the river-mouth in game useless and unsettleable.
aryann Mar 05, 2008, 03:27 PM Flood plains get my vote.
