View Full Version : I hate the game auto placing specialists
bhavv Mar 06, 2008, 11:43 AM Im playing a really easy Warlord game for fun and am building all the wonders in my Cities. However I am building them based on what type of great person they spawn E.G my capital has Great Lighthouse, Temple of Artemis, Collosus, and I have replaced my Palace so I can add a Versailles to it. I set it to run two Merchant specialists from a market and that was it. Two great people pops in a row, and I got Great Engineers!
I thought WTF how can they have been created in a city with plenty of + Great Merchant points???
I open the city and the game has automatically placed an Engineer specialist. Even if I remove it, everytime the city grows it auto places anonther Engineer, hence my second Great Engineer.
I just deleted them, opened up WB and replaced them with Great Merchants. I have a single city surrounded with towns pretty much bringing in enough gold to keep my whole empire running without a single courthouse, and it keeps on popping Great Engineers instead of more Merchants T_T.
I hate the stupid game choosing to auto place specialists in my cities and ruining my GP farms :(
ParadigmShifter Mar 06, 2008, 11:45 AM Get Civ4lerts or the HOF mod (which includes this, you need to turn it on in the options), you get a message about cities about to grow then.
It annoys me as well. I tend to check all my cities every turn anyway (I play methodically and very slowly).
toug Mar 06, 2008, 11:47 AM I swear, BtS has something for great spys. Every city that I don't check on for a while inevitably has a great spy hired in it.

ParadigmShifter Mar 06, 2008, 11:52 AM Well most cities tend to build a courthouse straight after code of laws and not all have libraries. It does love those spies though. Makes a change from priests everywhere in vanilla and warlords ;)
bhavv Mar 06, 2008, 12:10 PM If possible could you give me a link to those mods please?
And does anyone know a way to modify the Temple of Artemis to give a free Merchant instead of a free Priest? I find it really silly that a :commerce: wonder gives a free priest.
ParadigmShifter Mar 06, 2008, 12:20 PM It is a temple though...

Civ4lerts: this is an old mod, the last version seems to be here http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2293
Bleys Mar 06, 2008, 12:33 PM Ever since I started trying the HoF and GOTMs, I find I simply cannot live without the HoF mod loaded. It offers SO much, especially since I am a fan of TONS of cities. Knowing which ones will pop borders, grow n pop, get unhealthy, get unhappy, etc, the turn before it happens is very helpful indeed. I used to waste a lot of turns "forgetting" to go hook up that 2nd ring resource, or adjust a specialist, or whip back down to happiness, etc etc. Seriously, I even take most RPC games I shadow or series games like the LHC and scenario them out JUST so I can run the HoF mod.

I'll second that! I was really lazy and never bothered to get the HoF mod until a few weeks ago. Now I can't live without it's alerts!
bestje Mar 06, 2008, 04:31 PM isn't there a function of the HOF mod that makes a city auto place another specialist of whatever you already have? specialist stacker i think its called, it'll help but when you hit the limit of how many of a type you can have you will still get spies
and why aren't spies the last to be hired? they are by far the most useless unless running EE
Refar Mar 06, 2008, 04:40 PM Spies have the highest output - a Scientis: 3:science:, Merchant 3:gold:, Spy 4:espionage:+1:science:.. I am aware that this is a dumb way to decide, but apparently it's how it works...
bhavv Mar 06, 2008, 05:15 PM The only ones that I'm really bothered in running are Scientists, Artists, and Merchants. I dont really have a need for the others, except for Engineers in a low :hammers: city.
But even if a city has no hills and just grassland, its better to just use a couple of workshops then an Engineer.
I'm learning how to create specialist cities in my warlord game and am abusing the WB for a laugh. Then I'll try a Noble game with no hacks and try and create this wonderful Merchant farm. I dont think I'll be able to get all three of the early :commerce: wonders in the same city, but Temple of Artemis, collosus, Versailles and Statue of Liberty is deffinately doable on Noble.
ironic_lettuce Mar 06, 2008, 05:29 PM HOFmod is incredible! I've just downloaded it for my new game and I am doing so much better than previous games, and all because I get the alerts! Why this wasn't a part of the game as standard I'll never know!!!!!!!
J4Ck Mar 06, 2008, 05:30 PM yeah this thing is annoying.. if u have courthouse spy is assigned, otherwise a priest. Automating citizens when the option is off! this thing should be fixed (but i doubt it)... i would rather like no specialist is automatically assigned when city pops. similar thing happens if the size goes down. computer decides what u really need  :(
ParadigmShifter Mar 06, 2008, 05:32 PM Check this thread for "computer knows best " strategy...

J4Ck Mar 06, 2008, 05:38 PM hahaha... i would give all of my conquered cities in my current game to vassals following computer suggestions
bhavv Mar 06, 2008, 08:51 PM After I got BTS I started playing the europe map and changed my start possition to the UK (I love that Island). I had no idea about overseas maintance and after I went conquering in france I got the message asking about vassaling my colony. I clicked ok, no Idea what it did, and all my cities on britain changed to a vassal and I was left with 5 in france.
I had a serious W.T.F did I just do moment XD
