View Full Version : New Players Start Here
DaveShack Mar 07, 2008, 11:41 AM Welcome to the immigration office! Anyone is welcome to lurk and even comment, but we ask that you become a citizen if you would like to vote. Above all, we're here to have fun, and we hope that you do too! :D
Becoming a citizen of the Democracy Game is easy! Make a post in the Citizen Registry (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=266332) thread with the requested information, and you're in. You may want to visit the Citizens (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=286) forum, review the Factions, and join one which is compatible with the role you want to play. If you don't find a Faction you like, you can always start one and try to get people to join you. This forum is the gathering place for politics, role playing, and all the fun things we can dream up. More on Factions can be found later in this thread.
The Gameplay (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=287) forum contains everything about the BTS game that provides the underlying foundation of the Demogame. Here you will find in-game information, discussions on how to play the game, and other "out of character" (OOC) information. While not required, it is preferred that all, or at least most, OOC should occur here.
The Polls (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=288) forum is the voting booth for everything in the Demogame. It should contain no separate discussion theads, only polls -- though polls may of course contain (often heated) discussion. Anyone may post a poll related to in-game or in-character questions, though it's a good idea to take a look at some previous polls and follow the polling conventions. And the Prime Faction's rules may place restrictions on who should do what.
The Laws, Rules & Regulations (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=289) forum is the central repository of all things legal in the Demogame. It contains the core rules, Prime Faction's rules, discussions about rules, disputes between players, and courts (optional depending on rules).
Read on for more information about what a Democracy Game is and how we're playing this one.

Edit: added more info on democracy games
A Democracy Game is a little bit like a Succession Game, but with considerably more structure. The DemoGame players act as citizens of a mock civilization which parallels the Civ4 game. As such, we can:
* Role play, making up stories, a government structure, an economy, and anything else we might come up with.
* Collectively decide how to play the Civ4 game, either by choosing players to lead and organize play (primarily early game) or by direct polling (later in the game)
* Anything else that we come up with.
Right now it is 4000BC and we have not decided on our leader or traits yet. Subgroups of citizens are organizing themselves into Factions, which define their platform in terms of which leader they want to play as, how they will organize their government, and how they want to play the Civ4 game. The people will choose one of the Factions to be the Prime Faction (by voting), and the game will start using that faction's platform and government rules.
oyzar Mar 11, 2008, 11:41 AM This doesn't actually explain what a democracy game is... How does it work? is it like sgotm? Or is it a mp game with teams? or a mix of the two?
AluminumKnight Mar 11, 2008, 11:46 AM Hmmm I think Dave meant to expand this further considering he put "Read on for more information." Dave?
EDIT: Wow, just realized that the announcement went up. I'll give a short explanation, though Dave or someone else could surely do a better job than me.
The Democracy game is a game of Civ run by a mock government, set up by us, the citizens. By joining as a citizen, you are joining the nation that we will play in an actual game of Civ4. Actually physically playing the game is up to who is running the government at the time (which faction is currently in power will determine this). Factions are required to give reports and screenshots as to the status of the game often, so you'll know what's going on. I think that's about the basics. If you're still confused, please post in this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=266004
DaveShack Mar 11, 2008, 05:53 PM Yes, the plan was to have more material here.
croxis Mar 11, 2008, 06:59 PM Looks good Dave
pi-r8 Mar 11, 2008, 08:58 PM I'm so confused... what is this, again?

It is that!
If that is clear, which it maynot.
Radunz Mar 12, 2008, 12:11 AM May i be a merchant that goes in many factions to buy and sell stuf, like one has ivory, i go there fill my oxcart with it, then travel using factions roads, then get to another where they have marble and sell all i have, to buy marble and hire some of the local city guard(like an warrior or archer) to scout me to one city with banana and goes like this?
yeah and i can set the trade routes, and do some random events

Radunz Mar 12, 2008, 12:43 AM so i can be a merchant or i must be an governament part?

Certainly, you can play any role you wish.
AluminumKnight Mar 12, 2008, 08:04 AM The important thing to remember is that we play only ONE nation, despite having multiple factions. Think of factions as kind of political parties.
NZL Mar 12, 2008, 08:50 AM That means: a lot of chit chat, and not much chop chop ^^
AluminumKnight Mar 12, 2008, 09:51 AM That means: a lot of chit chat, and not much chop chop ^^
We're not trying to fly through a game of CIV here... it's meant to be like that. Notice how this is only the 3rd demogame since CIV (not just BTS, or even Warlords) was released?
Joe Harker Mar 12, 2008, 09:56 AM 3rd Civ 4 one, there have been a lot more civ 3 based demogames (look in the achives forums)
Oni of Chaos Mar 12, 2008, 02:33 PM That means: a lot of chit chat, and not much chop chop ^^
Well it's the same game as we would play normally, but instead of one mind making decisions, there are lots :goodjob:
boldra Mar 12, 2008, 03:01 PM What world parameters are we starting with?
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 12, 2008, 03:15 PM With 10 turns per term or was that weekly? One term is two weeks right? I don't know about you, but I've had games where a set of ten turns turned out to be crucial to living or dieing, especially on Emperor or Monarch level, and especially if you're already at war, so technically, your faction's term could be extremely important or mundane, depending on what's going on at the time.
Joe Harker Mar 12, 2008, 03:32 PM One term is two weeks right?
In the last gamne it was a month
With 10 turns per term or was that weekly?
Weekly, usally.
Feyd Rautha Mar 12, 2008, 05:27 PM I would be interested in participating although I'm not particularly keen on actually running the game. I already have a faction idea. Do I post a new thread or put it here?
EDIT: wow... I'm dumb... You think I would be able to read the inital post heh... Long day.
Joe Harker Mar 12, 2008, 05:29 PM A new thread :)
ace94d Mar 12, 2008, 06:13 PM I'm going to assume we will need BtS to play this, then? Or not?
*Confused even after reading*
Shattered Mar 12, 2008, 06:17 PM Yes, this game will be played using Civ 4 BTS (patch 3.13)
ace94d Mar 12, 2008, 06:21 PM Gugh. Guess that means I won't be able to play.
Oh well.
Shattered Mar 12, 2008, 06:32 PM you can still play, you just wont be able to open the save. The great thing about this game is, you dont even need civ to join! The fun is all on this forum my friend. :)
IamJohn Mar 13, 2008, 03:12 PM The only person who really has to have BTS is the turn player, everyone else can do what they need to from that report.\
Edit: wow, 100th post? That took awhile... On other forums I've gone up quite a bit quicker...
Strider Mar 14, 2008, 11:11 AM Gugh. Guess that means I won't be able to play.
Oh well.
All you need to play is some basic knowledge of CIV BTS (all of which you can learn from the civfanatics website). Otherwise we supply screenshots and save reports for you to look at.
ChazFox Mar 15, 2008, 01:59 PM This sounds like an interesting idea, I may join up and see what's going on. Same goes for a Multi-team Demo Game.
Of course, I'm still a newbie, only just having completed the tutorial, but if there's anything further I need to know, I can always consult the civilopedia. ^^
martorrie Apr 29, 2008, 05:52 AM Now this is all really confuzzling...
I have enrolled in the citizen registry - what do I do next?
I see that the game has already started and the game forum is full of posts about the game. There is no clue to what one should do as a citizen...
Joe Harker Apr 29, 2008, 05:55 AM Get involed in discussion is the best way to into the demogame, also take part in some of the roleplay and possibly join a faction. (If you wants rules go to the laws and regulations forum and go the the thread called "Core Rules" :))
thecommonnate May 24, 2008, 01:56 PM This seems real fun and I would like to become a citizen but I don't know how to affiliate myself with a faction or what you use to chat around here (both are requirements).
Could I maybe get a list of recognized factions and a link to the kind of chat system you guys use?
Lord Civius May 24, 2008, 04:31 PM Welcome to the Dgame. Right now the Arkadian Populist Regime is in power. Most of the other factions have died off due to our Government Civic changing to Hereditary Rule. Here is a list of the active factions.
Arkadian Populist Regime (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=272558)- (Arkadian Dynasty)
APR Platform (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=274195)
Home City is Arkadia
Leader- King, kwarriorpoet
Protectors of the Faith (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=265268)
Home City is New Giruvegan
Leader- Head of Faith, Diamondeye
The Infinate Weapons Master Faction (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=269366)
Leader- Weaponsmaster, Vandal Warlord
Just make a post in one of the links to sign up.
As far as chat we use an irc (internet relay chat). I use mIRC it is free and user friendly. Someone else may have a better suggestion.
thecommonnate May 24, 2008, 08:10 PM Thanks, I created everything and I'm signing up now, but if anyone could tell me if theres a free irc that would be great, I would like to do this for free.
civplayah May 25, 2008, 08:20 AM I would like to point out that the Protecters of the Faith has a sort of coalition with the Arkadian Dynasty. Kwarriorpoet, the King, has promised Diamondeye, the Head of Faith, full control over religion.
Welcome to the DemoGame, by the way!
Lord Civius Sep 01, 2008, 05:28 PM I would point new players to this thread- Start Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=285940)
It is more up to date.
