View Full Version : Fairy Swordfish
The_Coyote Mar 10, 2008, 07:15 AM so my next model (number 10), was harder to made than i expected (respect to everybody who made biplanes) and the polycount is a little bit high, but i think itīs nice :)
Fairy Swordfish:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairey_Swordfish
the model has 1250 vertices and 1180 triangles, use 2*256 textures (1 x colour, 1 x gloss)
scale for picture was 0.55
again uses the avenger animation (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=190826, included)
added to db: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9152
Ciao
The_Coyote
Edit: added model without remote control (means: pilot added, picture below in the thread, vertices and triangles around 1300)
woodelf Mar 10, 2008, 07:19 AM I love biplanes and this is beautiful.
avain Mar 10, 2008, 07:20 AM Jolly good one!!!
GeneralMatt Mar 10, 2008, 09:12 AM Wonderful! Nice job! How about making the emblem on the wings a tad larger though?
What program are you using?
Xenomorph Mar 10, 2008, 11:33 AM Beautiful job, though it's missing the pilot.
JEELEN Mar 10, 2008, 12:15 PM Maybe he fell out doing a loop. I wouldn't call this "nice", I call it beautiful!:goodjob:
mamba Mar 10, 2008, 12:16 PM Unlike Snafu's units, this one is on remote control ;) Nice plane :)
snafusmith Mar 10, 2008, 01:23 PM Unlike Snafu's units, this one is on remote control
Don't quite know what that means? Either way, nice plane!
GeoModder Mar 10, 2008, 01:34 PM Don't quite know what that means? Either way, nice plane!
It means the Fairy Swordfish can only fly after discovery of Radio.
snafusmith Mar 10, 2008, 01:40 PM It means the Fairy Swordfish can only fly after discovery of Radio.
Awesome!
mamba Mar 10, 2008, 02:14 PM Don't quite know what that means? Either way, nice plane!
That was meant for Xeno, who noted that the plane has no pilot, your biplanes do ;)
esnaz Mar 10, 2008, 04:35 PM Great job, looks great!
Doomed_UK Mar 10, 2008, 04:55 PM I rarely comment even though I grab most units here for my personnal mod, but on this occasion I have to break my silence to say 'thank you' for such a excellent unit.
This unit is dear to me as it is so often overlooked by so many WWII games, and yet this plane served so well (I am biased as my father served on these planes for the majority of the war).
danrh Mar 10, 2008, 05:06 PM Wow! Thats really nice. Good work.
Dan
Xenomorph Mar 10, 2008, 05:53 PM In case anyone is interested, here's some teamcolors and buttons.
The_Coyote Mar 10, 2008, 05:57 PM he thanks for the replies, but
i see no problem, first public radio transmission was around 1920 (at least in germany), maiden flight Swordfish 1934. Enough time to develop a remote controll :p
i think there will be a pilot later (and perhaps a gunner, too), but when there is something where i think i have a problem to model than this looks like a human being. but no challange no gain.
@ GeneralMatt
i use Blender to model and unwrap, and than Gimp and Paint.net (last because i have a big problem with painting straight lines  [even not drunken]) for the skin (and NifSkope and NifViewer)
Xenomorph Mar 10, 2008, 05:59 PM You could always just use the pilot model that everyone else uses. I think it's from the Sopwith Camel model.
Ambreville Mar 10, 2008, 07:38 PM Awesome! Thanks!
I'm adding this one to my mod, if it's OK with you! :goodjob:

That is what I thought! I would suggest learning Gmax for the modeling, trust me, it is so much easier (I used to use Blender to model, I just use it for UVing now.)
One benefit of this is that Blender sometimes smooths thing weird, and they do not live up to their full potential. I have learned that through experience also. ;)
Ambreville Mar 10, 2008, 08:36 PM By the way -- Coyotte -- do you have a button for that swordfish?
The_Coyote Mar 10, 2008, 08:43 PM first post updated with piloted model
@ all
thanks for the replies :), and yes i like the model too
@ Xenomorph
to late, made my own "FULSP" (fat ugly looking selfmade pilot), perhaps i will use the other own for the next model where i need own.
@ Ambreville
itīs ok, glad you have use for her, as always please give me the credits
@ GeneralMatt
thanks a lot for the advice, i had Gmax, my first model i ever made was in Gmax (a P38 Tutorial). But i had to deinstall Gmax, because it doesnīt worked any longer (if it tries to init the 3D, it crashes, even after reinstall) :(. So i "must" use blender, but i learned it even a little bit better and like it now.
(and it was hard to come into Blender after learning the basics in Gmax)
oh, und noticed, bigger emblems on the wings
Xenomorph Mar 10, 2008, 08:47 PM By the way -- Coyotte -- do you have a button for that swordfish?
My teamcolour version has some buttons in it. Of course, the update means I have to go back to redo the teamcolours...
Ambreville Mar 10, 2008, 08:47 PM itīs ok, glad you have use for her, as always please give me the credits
You bet! First thing when I update my scenario! :D
Xenomorph Mar 10, 2008, 08:57 PM And here's the updated teamcolour version (with pilot).
The_Coyote Mar 10, 2008, 09:07 PM thanks alot again Xenomorph :goodjob:
and sorry for the douple work
Wolfshanze Mar 10, 2008, 09:21 PM I'm late to the party apparently, but I've been asking for this one almost as long as the Martin B-10 (still nowhere to be seen... alas, DK, where are you?).
Always loved the Fairey Swordfish... poked a hole in the Bismarck's achilles heel too. Horror to the Italian Fleet (see Taranto)... dangerous plane... and works just fine with Radio Control.

That is too bad, and really weird. Yes, Blender is a tad harder in th modeling of low polygonal stuff I find. But in everything else she is great. ;)
I love the bigger emblems, before they looked, well, small.
psob2 Mar 11, 2008, 02:15 PM thanks for another nice plane. looks very good ingame
mamba Mar 12, 2008, 02:03 PM first post updated with piloted model
Great, imo it is a lot better with pilots :)
