See http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=263043
I am trying to isolate what the issue is. Could someone with Gold 4.0 installed see if they can open the attached gamesave? If so, do you see the city status bar/units? If you're trying to figure it out, go to the KhoSan's turn (the leader with the ! in their name)--all I see are two hammers moving in the air, with no worker to hold them. Ghost workers!

Is it just the one worker? (Cos it sounds like a memory/graphics issue to me.)

No, its all cities, all units. Its not a hardware issue, since a reinstall solved it. I'm trying to figure out how to make the old game work again--if you could try to open the gamefile attached to the first post, that would be a big help. Anyone? Bueller?

The only solution I see:
Rename the CIV Gold folder to CIV Gold 4. Download CIV Gold 3.0 (http://www.atomicgamer.com/file.php?id=66074). Install and finish your game.

No, this game was started with Civ Gold 4--hence the Khoi San. But it sounds like what you're saying is that the behavior is consistent with the game not being able to locate the correct art files for certain civs; that is, somehow thinking it is using Gold 3, not Gold 4.

So this isn't the same issue you reported here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=6587170#post6587170). And this is specific to CIV Gold and not just BTS by Steam?
Forget what I said, I'm only trying to understand what this is about.

Ah, yes. No, two separate errors. Fun week at casa Mknn. In this one, the game loads fine, but the city progress bar and all unit graphics are missing. You can even play the game fine, in a blind and ghostly sort of way.
I posted the gamesave file above, hoping someone could open it and let me know if the issue is in the gamesave or specific to my install of Civ. There is also a link in the first post to my post in the tech support forum, which has a little more info, as well as a remedy (cache clearing) that worked when it happened again.
I still, however, cannot get the save file attached above to open: it either crashes, or opens without city and unit graphics.
