View Full Version : New 2.13 patch out for Warlords!
cathyy Mar 12, 2008, 10:53 PM Grab it now. 841 meg. I'm currently d/l if from the Aspyr site, with only 1 day, 14 hours, and 56 minutes remaining. If somebody could put it up on Pirate Bay I'd be thrilled!

Thunderfall Mar 12, 2008, 11:30 PM 841 MB...
Considering the 2.13 patch for the PC version is only 83 MB in size, Aspyr must have accidentally posted the whole Warlords disk for people to download. :crazyeye:
Gatekeeper Mar 12, 2008, 11:58 PM Yikes! 841 MB? That definitely sounds like an error on Aspyr's part. Until confirmed otherwise, I'll stay away from the patch.

cathyy Mar 13, 2008, 02:01 AM That is suspicious. If I ever get it all downloaded I'll report back. It may just be Safari reporting the size wrong. Somehow, I doubt it. Posting the entire disc instead of just the patch is so...Aspyresque.
Welnic Mar 13, 2008, 02:14 AM This is what it says at Aspyr's site. They seem to think that it is 840 MBs.
CIVILIZATION IV WARLORDS 2.13 PATCH RELEASED
AUSTIN, Texas (March 12, 2008) – Aspyr Media today released a free patch for
Sid Meier’s Civilization IV Warlords. This update (840 MB) is available as
a free download at
http://support.aspyr.com/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=175&id=545.
Civilization IV Warlords 2.13
This is an official update for Sid Meier’s Civilization IV Warlords. This
patch will update any current version of the game to v2.13. This patch is
intended to bring the Mac version up to date with the PC version of the game
offering a variety of fixes.
Earthling7 Mar 13, 2008, 05:28 AM Downloaded it on the Powerbook. I started the installer and the read me said it was a patch. I didn't go any further as Civ is installed on the iMac. The PB was too slow for Civ4. So, looks like a patch, a big one.

I've got to agree. Something either got bundled with it in the upload phase, or they've given us something sweet for us being relatively patient. How does it compare to the PC equivalent?
RangerJoe Mar 13, 2008, 08:49 AM I've downloaded and applied the patch. This patch also updates the vanilla Civilization IV application. One other interesting note is that prior to the patch I had an alternative main menu mp3. After the patch the music file was restored to it's original state. I'm guessing that this patch may 'refresh' some of the art and music assets as well as patching the application.

Hey, look out for that....cliff.
AlanH Mar 13, 2008, 10:05 AM Thread Stuck
Good news, I guess. I was beginning to think Aspyr had simply consigned all Civ4 development to the great bit bucket in the sky.
Downloaded, at a pathetic 70KBytes per second. After I check it out, I'll need to update the HoF Mod to run with it ready for the next WOTM.
[Edit] Grrr! I guess I'll have to maintain a copy of (vanilla 1.74 and warlords 2.08) PLUS create a fresh copy of (vanilla 1.74 and warlords 2.13), in order to maintain backwards support for the existing GOTM stuff! Good job I've got lots of disk space ...
Thain Esh Kelch Mar 13, 2008, 10:41 AM Any word on changes that are Mac-specific?
AlanH Mar 13, 2008, 11:00 AM It installed OK here, and it runs.
The entire updated Warlords folder is 600 MBytes, and I suspect it was replaced lock stock and barrel by the patch installer, as there's no other explanation for the huge download.
I'm further confused, as my Warlords application file's Get Info screen still says it's still version 2.08 build 25430, last modified in March '07, which is the same as the information on the old copy. In-game, the About this Build screen says it's version 213, and built in late February, so I guess the installation worked - it said it did! Anyone else seeing this?
There's nothing about Mac-specific changes in the read-me
dojoboy Mar 13, 2008, 03:56 PM Okay, I really just want to use this smilie.
What? the mac version of 2.13 has been released?!?!?!
:faint:
Moved from the Mods thread, which has already been criticised for having non-relevant posts in it!
iamliberal Mar 13, 2008, 08:12 PM MMM, a nice birthday present for me! I can't wait to get home and download the patch!... anyone have a link to the patch notes so I can remember what's in the patch?
enkiduMT Mar 14, 2008, 12:11 AM it is in the install screen - tons of stuff

Cable, DSL or dial-up? I had no problems with cable.

comcast (arg!) cable here

Cable. Finally got it d/l'ed tonight.
cathyy Mar 15, 2008, 12:35 PM It really did take me almost 2 days to download. I got disconnected a couple times. I have 2048/512....in country, and speeds that vary internationally, but are frequently slower than dialup. Maybe I'll seed the patch since I often get better upload than download speeds.
Macintosh Mar 15, 2008, 02:05 PM yeah!

I loaded from the Aspyr page in about 2 hours and 40 minutes without any issues.
I let my Mac do this job last night, and now I will check it out :)
Macintosh Mar 16, 2008, 11:43 AM At least PBEM does not work, I tried to open a Windows Warlords 213 save and my Mac Warlords 213 ended. First there was a error message that the save is a protected save to protect my mod directory (okay, there is no really a sense in this message, but it was like this) and after confirming with OK a next message told me that the loading of the save has failed, and the program quits.
iamliberal Mar 16, 2008, 11:57 AM I have cable, and it downloaded super fast but then "failed to mount." So I clicked download again and it downloaded relatively fast and succeeded...
Played my first civ game in several months, and boy is it fun!

That is not surprising if the game was being played in version 2.08. Several key Assets files have been changed as a result of the patch - hence the error message.
Multiplayer games, including PBEM, are typically played with Locked Modified Assets checked in the game setup. This causes the game software to do a CRC sum-check on all the Assets that can affect game-play, to ensure that the current player is using the exact same setup as the other players.
You will need to keep a copy of version 2.08 to use for those Locked Assets games that were started using it.

Well, the windows save is 213. It once had started as 208 but was upgraded to 213 some month ago. So, for all this months I was not able to join the democracy Game of the german civilization webring, and I waited for our version of the 213 patch.
Now it is there - and I still cannot join :(
AlanH Mar 16, 2008, 03:48 PM OK, I didn't realise you were *already* excluded from a 2.13 game when running 2.08.
If you are *still* excluded now that you are on 2.13, then it sounds as if Aspyr have screwed up, and the assets are not cross-platform compatible. I'll do a comparison, as I also have 2.13 for Windows here, and let you know what's different.
Macintosh Mar 16, 2008, 04:04 PM In our german forum there is the suggestion that there are two different version of the 213 patch, and they are not the same even they are both named 213.
The first version is the 213 patch which is build during the Beyond the Sword installation, and the other version of the 213 patch is the Warlord only patch (without BtS).
AlanH Mar 16, 2008, 04:39 PM That's correct, and it may well be the reason for your problem. If so it also suggests the solution ...
The Windows BtS installer replaced both the vanilla and Warlords CvGameCoreDLL.dll files in the two respective Assets directories. I think Firaxis' intention was to rationalise various different releases, including some online delivery versions, but they should also have released a patch to get *everyone* up to the new version.
We had a lot of hassle in the GOTM competitions during the BtS transition as a result. Eventually we got permission to distribute the DLL file versions that were installed by BtS so that everyone could be on the same set of asset files, whether they had installed BtS or not.
Your Mac installation includes the Windows copies of the CvGameCoreDLL.dll files. They are not actually used for anything EXCEPT when the software is running its Locked Assets check. It's highly likely that Aspyr have delivered the non-BtS versions of these files. If the other players in your PBEM game are using the post-PtS version of the DLLs then this could be what's causing your problem.
If so, the answer is to download the post-BtS files here (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/Civ4_BtS_DLLs.zip). The zip file expands to a folder structure containing the vanilla and Warlords DLL files. Copy your existing ones to a safe place in case you need to revert, then replace them with the downloaded ones. Let's see if that fixes your problem?
Macintosh Mar 17, 2008, 03:51 PM Let's see if that fixes your problem?
Sadly not.
First of all: I have found only one CvGameCoreDLL.dll.
I found it in the Civilization IV Assets folder, so I assume that it is the vanilla CvGameCoreDLL.dll. I renamed the existing one into CvGameCoreDLL_alt.dll and placed the new one I downloaded here into this folder.
I did not found another CvGameCoreDLL.dll file in the Warlords' assets folder, so I have no idea which CvGameCoreDLL.dll is to be replaced by the CvGameCoreDLL.dll I have downloaded.
Second: The type of the files are different: The old CvGameCoreDLL.dll is described as a executable UNIX file, the new one is just a document. See screenshots attached. Maybe the file type needs to be changed?!
AlanH Mar 17, 2008, 03:56 PM You are quite right. There's no DLL file in my /Applications/Civilization IV/Warlords/Assets/ folder either.
No screenshots, but forget what OS X pretends the file types are for unknown file extensions. It's just guessing, and whatever it chooses, it's irrelevant.
Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
Macintosh Mar 17, 2008, 04:00 PM No screenshots,
... I needed a second try ;)
AlanH Mar 17, 2008, 04:07 PM I'll make a guess:
The one with 'alt' in its name has the execute bit set in its access permissions. That makes it a UNIX executable as far as OS X is concerned. The other one doesn't, so it is a generic 'document'. It's still irrelevant :)
Macintosh Mar 17, 2008, 04:10 PM It's still irrelevant :)
So what can be done ?
AlanH Mar 17, 2008, 04:20 PM Send me a copy of the latest PBEM filethat doesn't open on your system, and I'll see if I can find a combination of Assets that it will play with. I have the Windows version of Warlords here, so I can check whether it works with that, then see what I have to do the make the Mac version look the same.
Of course, if there's another variable in the mix, such as a German version issue, or even a mod with German language content, then it may be a fool's errand.
Macintosh Mar 17, 2008, 04:37 PM You have mail .... :)
vyeh Mar 20, 2008, 05:10 PM A funny thing ...
I started downloading using SpeedDownload. After downloading 2/3, I got the message "Access Forbidden."
Tried starting again from MacGameFiles. Got the message "AccessDeniedAccess"
However, the Aspyr site worked.
A little investigation showed that the ORIGINAL URL of my download and for MacGameFiles was:
http://files.aspyr.com/support/Civ4_Warlords_2.13.dmg
The URL for ASPYR is:
http://files.aspyr.com/support/Civ4Warlords2.13.dmg
Note the two "_" in the first address and missing in the second.
Fortunately, I was able to edit the URL Speed Download was using so I didn't lose the 560 MB I had already downloaded!
Why would anyone at Aspyr.com edit the address????

It is quite strange, but meanwhile I had the chance to test other Windows Warlords 213 PBEM-Saves and found them well working, just this DG save won't work.
Zaimejs Mar 25, 2008, 04:51 PM I started playing with the patch... and I don't notice any big differences. Still really slow... almost impossible to play on my dual 2.0 gig G5. Crashed randomly several times... seemed more unstable than before.
Macintosh Mar 27, 2008, 04:23 AM ... seemed more unstable than before. My experience, too. Also G5 Dual 2,0 GHz.
oLO Mar 30, 2008, 01:01 PM the update is running well on both the 1.8 Mhz macbook(1gbram) and the new imac.
I also find the AI improvements very noticeable and enjoy the more swift unitmove experience.
I would have appreciated the Bts technology trade feature a lot tho!!!
And this must have been the best German translated update info I´ve ever had.
I wonder if spore will be out before bts for mac ;)
oLO(rd)
iamliberal Mar 30, 2008, 02:25 PM 2.13 is working well for the most part on my imac (2.33 core 2 duo, 2 GB ram). However, every couple of hours the game crashes to desktop, and I can't find any pattern. Also, three times, the game messed up my sound with a loud BANG, then no sound after that. The BANG scared the bajeezuz out of me at 1am!

Same here:
(1) runs fine and improvements appear to be improvements
(2) bizarre random crashes, from the menu screen to clicking on some random feature in-game
(3) twice the sound has disappeared after I left the game running then woke it up later to play.

German translated update info??
And I'm betting Spore will be out before BtS...running unplayably with Cider. But I'm just an optimist.
iamliberal Mar 31, 2008, 02:45 AM Sorry, what's Spore and Cider?
cathyy Mar 31, 2008, 03:04 AM Spore is an awesome new game from wil Wright. http://www.spore.com/
Cider is, when all the semantics are concluded, an emulator to let Intel Mac owners run Windows games. Early reports are that it sucks as mightily as you'd expect gaming to suck using an emulator. http://www.macworld.com/article/52176/2006/08/cider.html
It may be the demise of gaming on the Mac. It's certainly the demise of MY game playing as I won't buy a game that uses Cider.
Gatekeeper Mar 31, 2008, 03:18 AM Well, I finally got around to downloading the patch ... process went smoothly, finished in 10 to 15 minutes (cable modems rock at 2:30 in the morning). No issues installing the patch, either.
Now all I have to do is find the time to actually play a game of Civ!
Gatekeeper
cathyy Mar 31, 2008, 08:00 AM I've played a couple games since patching. It still crashes, but crashing doesn't seem to be either more or less common than before. I haven't had the graphics glitch where all the buildings turn very dark since patching, but that seemed to have a direct relationship to playing on larger worlds with lots of cities (so having more data for the poor game to keep track of) and I've been lying on small worlds.
AlanH Mar 31, 2008, 09:03 AM Have any of you sent crash reports to Aspyr?
oLO Mar 31, 2008, 09:16 AM German translated update info??
You wouldnt believe how messed up some translations are. Some companies only seem to use babelfish or something similar and it often ridicules the meaning big time. This one was flawless. :crazyeye:
Cheers oLO(rd)
AlanH Mar 31, 2008, 09:53 AM A German fan produced an alternative German translation because the Firaxis one was so bad. Firaxis have taken advantage of a lot of fan-created material in the recent releases, and I imagine that's one example.
oLO Mar 31, 2008, 06:14 PM one of the classic mal-translations ( in AMIGA KARATE) translated "joystick" literally, basically calling it a "pleasure rod", so whoever was responsible for the German version did really well, thx!

iamliberal Mar 31, 2008, 08:16 PM Were you referring to a Commodore Amiga? I loved my Amiga computer back when I was in high school! That's the computer I first played Civ1 on :)

Alan, I have not sent any crash reports to Aspyr - there aren't any generated. Or at least, I do not get any window prompting me that a report was generated, and do I want to Send it anywhere.
AlanH Mar 31, 2008, 10:30 PM There should be crash reports in the Console Logs. Look around in ~/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter/Civilization IV ...
frunobulax Apr 01, 2008, 04:38 PM Downloaded (in under 5 mins) and installed the Warlords 2.13 patch and it is running absolutely sweet as a nut on my iMac Intel Core 2, no complaints here, no crashes after 6 - 7 hours playing :)
bloodycelt Apr 02, 2008, 11:05 PM Cider isn't exactly an emulator... what Cider does is it allows windows code to run on a non windows environment. It's a set of shared libraries and development tools.
It's based off WINE (Which stands for WINE is not an emulator).
Performance problems are a slight factor, since direct 3d is supposed to be running off the video card itself and I'm not certain how Cider adapts this to OpenGL or if it in fact allows the Direct 3d code to go straight to the card, either way: Yes Cider most likely does impede performance, but about the same as most ports of mac games unless done properly (and rare is that).
oLO Apr 03, 2008, 08:41 AM Sounds like good news to me so far :)
Macintosh Apr 04, 2008, 05:35 AM Have any of you sent crash reports to Aspyr?Do you think it will help? Well, maybe.... next time I will do so. I have started a game yersterday and the first crash was while starting up

dojoboy Apr 06, 2008, 02:56 PM I've sent Aspyr about 3 crashlogs regarding random ctds, through their support site. I doubt seriously we'll see anything out of them for various stability issues among the machine types.
dojoboy Apr 07, 2008, 01:31 PM Here's what the good old Aspyr Support department sent me in response to my crash reports:
Thank you for your continued feedback on the Civ 4 Warlords patch. At this time
we have not received reports from other customers about Warlord 2.13 causing
crashes or other problems. While looking into your two most recent crashlogs I
have noticed a common factor. The crash thread in the log indicates a crash in
your Open GL/video card drivers and not the game itself. If Open GL or video
card drivers crash or malfunction any game will crash.
AlanH Apr 07, 2008, 01:56 PM ... so no one else has reported any crashes with Warlords 2.13?
Endure Apr 07, 2008, 03:18 PM I reported a couple crashes with the patch. It crashes randomly for me from time to time.
AlanH Apr 07, 2008, 03:58 PM Well, if the crashes *really* relate to the OGL or graphics divers, then Apple needs to know. However, I think Aspyr are a little cavalier in assuming that it's not their code that's provoking the crashes, wherever they occur.
... any game will crash
Do any other games crash?
iamliberal Apr 07, 2008, 04:02 PM I play a lot of World of Warcraft and it NEVER crashes. When playing Civ4 Warlords 2.13, it crashes every 3-5 hours. Next time it does, I'll find the log and send it.

Warlords is the only game I own atm that suffers random CTDs. Now, I do own other Aspyr ports that do not crash per my ailing memory. Granted, I play Warlords by far the most - along with EU3: Napoleon's Ambition via Virtual Programming.
AlanH Apr 07, 2008, 05:14 PM I rest my case :p
dojoboy Apr 07, 2008, 05:16 PM :p

However, I think Aspyr are a little cavalier in assuming that it's not their code that's provoking the crashes, wherever they occur.

I'm sure it is, but I'm getting the same crashes to the desktop as with earlier versions. Since they fixed HoMM V, this is the only game I have that's crashing (but not really very often).

Is there some other legal way to download it like via a torrent or an ftp site that would support starting a download from the point it left off?
Thank you.

dutchking Jul 06, 2008, 11:01 AM I've reinstalled Civ for Mac. :)
Windows wasn't working out for me ;), I'm downloading this patch at 779 kbs/second. I noticed when I installed the vanilla patch that the graphics on my macbook looked like they did on the iMac. Everything is shaded, I was very pleased to find.
Virtual Alex Aug 02, 2008, 02:13 PM I just used the "Check for updates" button inside the program and it told me there is a 213 patch and asked me if I wanted to get it.
I said yes, and it downloaded it, and said its installed but requires the game to restart. So I restarted the game, and checked the build and it was still 2.0.0. I checked for updates again and it told me there is a 213 update and asked me if I wanted to install it -.-. I am downloading it from the link provided now, and applying to from outside.
By the way, what does this patch do?

If you read the FAQ you will discover that the in-game update menu item takes you to the Windows update. That will do you no good whatsoever. You need to download the Aspyr patch, from MacGamesFIles, as linked in the sticky threads at the top of this forum list.
Virtual Alex Aug 02, 2008, 08:05 PM Yeah got it, and installed it. PLayed for about 5 min, seemed to work fine. I will be playing much more tonight.
lifecry Nov 13, 2008, 08:51 PM here goes a stupid question:
is there aright/wrong way to install the patch?
is just hucking it into the correct folder enough?
if so, which folder?
sorry if these admittedly goofy questions already have been ( and they almost certainly have ) answered elsewhere.:p
AlanH Nov 14, 2008, 04:28 AM 1. Don't try to update by clicking the in-game menu option - that downloads the Windows patch which is no use to you.
2. Download the one linkd in the start of this thread.
3. Run it by double clicking it. It's an installer.
MotezumaMan Aug 15, 2009, 10:51 PM Very nice.
And, welcome to CFC Ranger Joe! :)
Your first post, yet joined in 2002. ??? where is that
Chronoix Dec 21, 2009, 07:52 AM euhm, on spore cute & horror there are some patches ON THE DISK, is this the same for civil. IV (so the update is on the next expansion)?:coffee:
AlanH Dec 21, 2009, 10:51 AM Hi, welcome :wavey:
The next expansion is Beyond the Sword, which expands vanilla Civ4 and doesn't require Warlords. So it doesn't include an update to the original Warlords v2.08 expansion as far as I know.
I recommend that you check the version number the application file of each variant of the game. If it isn't the latest, just download and apply the latest patch. There are links here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=317041).
