View Full Version : Standard Timezone for game deadlines and communications
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 14, 2008, 06:07 AM GMT wins with 15 votes vs. EST with 7 votes.
There has been a debate, started as a result of the first election. This debate centers on a timeline for actually getting the elections rolling. Several of us here feel that it would be wise to standardize our timezone by a vote.
So, I'm posting a poll here, concerning choices among the time zones that appear on the surface to be the most prevalent. Please choose the best timezone for you.
Diamondeye Mar 14, 2008, 08:29 AM Please inform:
1) how long the poll will be running
2) will there be a runoff (preferred imo)?
3) What time will the discussion be (not timezone, but time for the chosen timezone)? 20.00?
4) If you haven't already, post in the poll index.

Date of closure is mentioned at top of poll.
A runoff will only occur if there are two or more really close options. At the moment, EST and GMT are the only options people have voted.
The discussion...if you're referring to the elections, that's all predicated on how quickly the platforms can be released.
I will post to the index.
dutchfire Mar 14, 2008, 10:20 AM There is absolutely no need for a standard timezone. All time periods should be defined in hours (for example a rule could say each poll must be open for at least 24 hours). Since we're only dealing with time differences, we don't have to use absolute times.
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 14, 2008, 10:23 AM As of this post, there are 5 for GMT, and 2 for EST.
DaveShack Mar 14, 2008, 11:33 AM Where did a suggestion of Pakistan time come from?
We have traditionally used UTC (aka GMT) for scheduled events, and posted common time zone conversions. Using a standard of UTC makes the math easy for everyone, because all anyone needs to know is local timezone plus or minus from UTC. Using something other than UTC also gets messed up with daylight savings time, because there are some locations which don't use DST and various locations go onto and off DST on different dates.
Durations have always been in hours or days since the event. Polls are always in days because that's what the forum uses.
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 14, 2008, 11:38 AM In order to cast an idea in cement, you must first destroy all other possabilities in the harshness of pure daylight. (The actual quote is very close to that...)
Radunz Mar 14, 2008, 01:17 PM GMT lots of international players
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 14, 2008, 01:29 PM So far...it's GMT in the lead with 7 votes, and coming up in second is EST with 3 votes...
Diamondeye Mar 14, 2008, 01:48 PM Okay, no more to add, my ote is cast for Greenwich Miridian Timezone (London)
Methos Mar 14, 2008, 07:00 PM GMT. It's easiest for international gameplay IMO.
ravensfire Mar 14, 2008, 10:17 PM RMT - duh! :crazyeye:
(inside joke - but who will remember it ...)

DaveShack Mar 14, 2008, 10:37 PM :wavey: I do, let's see how many more do.
Spam? who, me? :hide:
AljayBoy Mar 17, 2008, 05:00 AM Yeah GMT please :)
Provolution Mar 19, 2008, 11:36 AM GMT it is then, unless some powerful group suggests a run-off between GMT and WCT, given the latest trend in run-offs :)
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 19, 2008, 11:45 AM Do they have moon time yet? What would your watch read on the dark side of the moon?
Diamondeye Mar 19, 2008, 05:47 PM GMT it is then, unless some powerful group suggests a run-off between GMT and WCT, given the latest trend in run-offs :)
Now, don't be angry kiddo :cowboy:
That discussion has nothing to do in this thread. ;)

Well, it has, and it hasn't. As the prime inspiration of this infamous "run-off", you are part of that element legitimizing that sort of polling behavior, we are about to end that, possibly within the core rules. There will no more be any illegitimate run-offs like that, and no more requesting tailor-made polls as if you ordered some tune from a local radio station.
Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 20, 2008, 07:19 AM GMT it is, and so it shall be.

Careful, Diamondeye - you don't want to inspire the wrath of the Cabal!

Seidrik_The_Gray Mar 20, 2008, 08:40 AM Daryl, turns toward the excitement, with a hand the size of a small child resting on his belly, and a begging eye toward Seidrik, a low rumbling of stone sliding off a hill crashes into the heavy air, as Daryl tries to whisper his request, "Seidrik, I'm getting hungry, and those over there might be nice with some Rosemary and some of that salt that you showed me earlier. I know we said no villagers, but they upset my stomach..."
With a wide-open and placating gesture, Seidrik bows out of the conversation and turns toward Daryl, and steps onto the stool next to Daryl, who is sitting down by the door, and with a pat on his head, gently chides him. "Daryl, noooo, they aren't fighting, they're just doing what we humans love to do...it's just a discussion at this point, nothing to worry yourself over."
