Just wondering what is the advantage of a dual boot system, 1/2 Microsoft, 1/2 Linux?

for when you want/need both XP and a linux based operating system. If you don't want or need both then there isn't any reason.

Thats about the only answer you can get, unless of course what your really asking is why should I devote a portion of my hard drive for running a linux based operating system. In which case I would say security and customization. Then again the vast sea of options can be a curse for new users

If you wish to use Linux as your main everyday OS, and keep Windows for when you want to play games, then a dual boot is for you. If you wanna do that the other way around though, you've got head issues ;)

Wine can run most commercial software, and you can find free alternatives that will natively run. Although if its some big app like AutoCAD, for which I havent seen a Linux alternative, I guess you'd want to have Windows.

I used to dual boot. But then I had to move my computer away from the router so now I have to use wireless (and surprise, surprise netgear don't do Linux drivers for wireless adapters).

There is ndiswrapper for (most) wireless drivers, and flash plugin is working quite well, even in Konqueror (even though the plugin is for FF). It does have some problems on a x64 architecture, though.
