My first ever adventure game was Lure of the Temptress, for the Amiga500 :) Then i got Cruise for a Corpse, which i loved as well, and following that Simon the Sorcerer.
For the pc i enjoyed playing Beneath a steel sky, Broken sword 1 & 2 and Gabriel Knight.

And you?

I dont have 1 favorite - but there are several that are really awsome.

DeFoe series (5days a Stranger, 7days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, 6days a Sacrifice) - one of the best and most complex horror story i ever saw. (not the most original tho :D) They have ugly(by some people's standards) graphics but I THINK they are free for download. If not then ... umm ... nvm. :mischief:
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - probably the most awsome depressing horror story game ever
Monkey Island 1,2,3,4 - no comment
Sam&Max - Season1 is fun.
Sanitarium - a very insane/horror/disturbing game
Still Life - awsome noir detective story
The Longest Journey - beautyfull, just beautyfull.

I'm sure i forgot other great ones ...

Day of the Tentacle, of course.

The Longest Journey and its sequel. - Great story and setting, even better characters.
Grim Fandango - Amazing art style, writing and characters.
Sanitarium - Awesome settings and good puzzles
Sam and Max Season 1 - Great humor and main characters

Grim Fandango - Seriously, play it
Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis - Best 'classic' point 'n click adventure ever made! Plus it has 3 different paths to play!
King's Quest II Remake by AGD Interactive (http://www.agdinteractive.com/). Highest productionvalue ever seen in a free game!

And eagerly anticipating:
Indiana Jones & The Fountain of Youth (http://www.barnettcollege.com/index2.htm). Forever in production, but shows awesome potential. The demo is nice too...

Day of the Tentacle
Grim Fandango
Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Those three stick most, the latter one probably because I played it so recently, but it had me gripped throughout the entire time I played it.

I don't know, the only ones I played are rubbish, but every game I play is.

True adventure games have no poor graphics. They don't have graphics.

I can't pick one favorite, I will just say:
Any game by Steven Meretzky and Infocom!

I did also like Zak McKracken and Monkey Island 1 & 2. But nothing compares to Infocom games.

I played 5 days a stranger. It was rather nice :)
I can also find 7 days a sceptic, but not the other two. If they are freeware does anyone have links to them?

The official site (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm)

Things get more complicated after the first game.

Zelda and Pirates win hands-down. I'm looking forward to playing Okami and Sam & Max on my Wii soon, though.

Neither Zelda nor Pirates is an adventure...

What do you mean? This forum is about adventure games, and they're both adventures games? What do you call them?

Zelda has elements from several genres. If i had to pick one, i'd say it's a RPG. The only typical RPG element that's missing is an elaborate leveling system. It is too focused on combat to count as an adventure.
Pirates is a mix as well, but i can't think of (m)any adventure elements. The overall focus is not on the story, and there aren't any real puzzles. There are quite a lot of games like Pirates: Elizabeth II, Fugger, Port Royale, ..., so many it deserves its own genre.

Heh, that's why action-adventure has become a genre.

Real adventure games are rare these days, I can of perhaps Sam and Max and that's it. Oh, and Tim Schafer's stuff. Persoanlly, I see no problem with counting Zelda as an adventure, IMO not enough character development for an RPG, and the comabt is never too intensive. Action-adventure fits perfectely.

If we have to go more pure... Psychonauts was a fun game.

Zack & Wiki might be a good example of a modern adventure game.

Aye, forgot about that. I've heard good things about it to.

Come to think of it, I still haven't finished The Longest Journey 2... I stopped after I hit the second city, where I found myself disagreeing with Zöe's choice... "It's just your ex, Zöe! It's not worth it to take such big risks!"

Then I got sucked into FFH2 and a number of roguelikes (Dwarf Fortress, Incursion, GearHead)...

After finishing The Longest Journey I realized I hate the genre. The gameplay always consists of pixel hunting the entire screen and trying to use every single item on objects. Getting stuck usually means your cursor missed that tiny object a few screens ago

Favorite? Grim Fandango was funny and BaSS somewhat interesting

That's why I havn't gotten through Monkey Island yet. Point and click adventures are just not that great.

Both Grim Fandango and TLS provide a way to switch focus... in GF Manny's head will turn. In TLS2 you get a huge blue cursor. Which means you won't miss any usable objects if you use the button... zero pixel hunting in both.

Cursor highlighting still means you have to hover your cursor all over the screen. Grim Fandango is an exception since it's not a point-and-click adventure game

You haven't played TLJ2 then... it contains a bit of action elements, and you can use mouse *and* keyboard/joystick movement at the same time. But either alone would be sufficient to perform all the operations in the game.

It has a key for focus - press it, and a target cursor will highlight an usable object on the screen, and your character will turn to face it. If you are too far away, you can look at it, and if you're close, you may interact with it. Press the focus key again, and the cursor will go to the next object. As I already said: zero pixel hunting.

I had to restart The Longest Journey. I got to a point that I needed an item and I should've got at the beginning of the game, and I couldn't get back there.
