View Full Version : About to buy a new Mac
grc-civ Mar 17, 2008, 11:33 AM Looking at the current iMac 20" 2.4, the one with the Radeon 2600 Pro in it.
It'll have the stock 1GB of RAM, and perhaps either another 512MB that I have lying around or I'll get a 2GB SO-DIMM from Crucial.
I don't want to JUST play Civ IV on it, but it would be good to.
I currently have a Core Duo Mini with 2GB and it sucks on that - not the AI, but the video and a 2.0 iMac G5 and it's worse on there than the mini.
Frankly if the iMac 20" 2.4 isn't good enough, you'd need a Mac Pro to get better.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any views from people running Civ IV on that Mac.

Onagan Mar 17, 2008, 01:01 PM I've that iMac, and run Vista to play Beyond the Sword. I don't know about the Mac version of Warlords/Civilization IV.
But if you can, get 4GB of RAM

Right, so apart from running Windows (don't want to) and throwing away 1GB or RAM, any other suggestions?
Will Civ IV for Mac OS X run on that spec iMac with either 1.5 or 3GB of RAM?
AlanH Mar 17, 2008, 03:44 PM Hello, welcome :wavey:
I have no doubt that your proposed iMac's basic specs are fine. No problem with the CPU speed, and 3.5 GBytes is always better than 1.5, but i imagine either would be adequate.
However, I have no personal experience of any iMac, and it's possible that the graphics card will not support Civ4, given that every new graphics card from Apple seems to break Civ4 one way or another :p So you are right to try to get information from a real user of your iMac.
Having said that, none of the current models have graphics cards that were around when Aspyr released Civ4. I have personal experience of their stock response to any complaint from a user of a new Mac: "Sorry. Civ4 was not tested with the <XYZ Mac/GPU/ .... whatever>. Have a nice day." :(
grc-civ Mar 17, 2008, 04:06 PM Um, so most of the Macs around when it was released were inadequate and the newer faster ones are not supported. Well that's just dandy.
Original question still stands, I guess.
(Don't suppose it will run on this Asus eeePC that I'm posting this from either!!!)
AlanH Mar 17, 2008, 04:11 PM Don't shoot! I'm just the messenger :p
My Mac Pro was an early victim of Aspyr and Apple's seeming inability to get software and drivers and hardware to talk to each other.
[Edit] I s'pose you could try Civ4 for Windows in Cedega on your Eee. I'm quite sure that it would run reasonably OK in Parallels on your Mac.
nauticus Mar 18, 2008, 01:21 AM Hi,
I have the newest iMac 2.4 Ghz, 1 gig RAM, top video card and with the newest OS X Leopard update plus the new Warlords patch, Warlords plays like I always expected it should: just about normal.
I went from 1st gen iMac to this 2 months ago. Warlords was very very buggy on the old iMac, less so with the new. But, as I just said with all the latest software updates OS X and Warlords 2.13 it runs great.
good luck.

Sorry, just a little frustrated.

Thanks for that info, my credit card is twitching as I write this...
Welnic Mar 18, 2008, 03:30 AM Be sure to check out getting a refurb iMac, the link is toward the bottom of the main store page on the left side. For example, at the moment you can either save $250 on the 20" model you are talking about or pay the same price for a 24". I buy all of my macs for work and home as refurbs unless it is something I buy on the day they are announced, and they have all worked great.
I would either add another 1GB stick of memory, or 2 2GB sticks. This kind of memory works better if it is in matched pairs. The jump from 1GB to 2 is definitely worth doing. At least for playing Civ IV 2GBs is plenty.
enkiduMT Mar 18, 2008, 09:56 AM my base model Al iMac w 3GB runs CIV great
it has crashed a few times since the new update (never crashed before)
no graphics glitches other than occasional 'black ice/improvements' which goes away with a zoom out then back in
I am running 10.4.11
Aoxomoxoa Mar 19, 2008, 12:05 AM If you can afford it, the 24" is oh soooooo sweet. Flat damn gorgeous.
I got mine from the Apple Store refurb, put 4 gigs of ram in it. Warlords runs well, but lordy BTS is really making me think about boot camp on it.

Perhaps. Problem is, it wouldn't physically fit. My current iMac is a 17" 2.0G5 and the current 20" is the closest to that. If these things keep getting bigger, I'll need a larger house.
edvelvet Apr 03, 2008, 05:01 PM Just got Civ IV for Mac on 20" iMac 2.4GHz with 3GB RAM.
Plays nice straight out the box, looks great on highest settings... but I'm only up to 600AD. My one-year old son is fascinated by the little sheep and fish and the busy workers :)
(Can anyone recommend patches/mods, and any advice on how to (or how not to) stall them?

Hi Ed!
There are only a handful of mods that work on the mac. There is a stickied thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=177918) in this forum dedicated to info on mods that work with the mac version of the game.
Good to hear that your game works well so far. What size map are you playing? Many people experience problems on larger maps during the later years.
edvelvet Apr 03, 2008, 10:05 PM I'm on the map size below Normal. I can't play big long games as the rest of my life gets in the way :) When I get a long weekend I'll try something bigger.
Thanks for the link to the mod thread.
