I'll use them for Italy in my mod. :goodjob:

How should the ships be named?

I remember those land units. The Sea units are an excellent addition.

Fantastic Wyrmshadow, I love these units. I.ve been using the musketman in one of my mods for some time but now I just have to add these ships. the armored cruiser makes me think of the ship-sub from the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Great work.

Thanks

I was just looking at the spoiler for the armored cruiser more closely and noticed an interesting detail about the bow. Is this ship a catamaran design or is that just an illusion.

Wyrmshadow
Mar 21, 2008, 04:29 PM
No.. I made it a 3 pronged bow.

Does this mean that they also serve as a ram. That would be acurate for the tactical thinking of the day, even though the ram was much more dangerous to your own ships than the ships of your enemy.

Does this mean that they also serve as a ram. That would be acurate for the tactical thinking of the day, even though the ram was much more dangerous to your own ships than the ships of your enemy.

The late 19th century was a constant game of one-upmanship in terms of Armor and guns. For a long time armor could be built stronger than any navaly transportable gun could be made to breach it. So it was surmised as late as 1898 to go back to the ancient days of making ramming bows for the vessels. (Read H.G. Well's War of the Worlds.. HMS Thunderchild is described only as an Ironclad-ram.) Luckily guns eventually could be made to pierce that generation of heavy armor and so the idea of the ram died.

These ships are just ideas.. it's impossible to create a ramming attack AND a broadside attack for these ships in civ. But I kept the design because I like the look.

My curiosity was from a design standpoint only, was it intended to look like a ram visualy?

BTW, it's nice to see someone els reads H. G. Wells, and didn't the Thunderchild destroy a Martian craft before being destroyed itself. I haven' t read the book since the early 90s, I think I'll read it again soon.

Wow Wyrm, your timing is impeccable! I'm collecting just this sort of "hypothetical" units for the next version of INEMONH, and a few gaps missing have now been filled; especially that ironclad. :D

EDIT II: Never mind, I hadn't seen the thread about the Telefragged server crashing.

I see that someone has been distilling Awesome Sauce :D

I'll be using that monitor as the Ironclad Ram in the Final Fantasy mod.

EDIT: I don't know if this happened to anyone esle, but for some reason I keep getting some stupid error code every time I try to download either of the two units.

Edit II: Never Mind... I just saw the announcement about the file server crash :wallbash:

Hmm, I also first thought it to be a ramming device on the Armored Cruiser - love the detail in the imperial golden Romanesque decor

Very nice; I especially like the Armoured Cruiser, which is very atmospheric in a steampunk kind of way.

These ships are just ideas.. it's impossible to create a ramming attack AND a broadside attack for these ships in civ.

I'm sure you could make the different animations, it's just that they couldn't both be used by the same unit in the same game. The person adding the unit to the mod would just have to decide which animations to use.

these are incredible... i've been looking for someone to do this for a while now.

are you going to make WWII era units, like bombers or tanks?

LOL!

If you dig a little further back in the units forum you'll find Wyrmshadow's WW II units. He's done just about everything imaginable.

These are the coolest units I've seen in a long time! These would go perfect with steampunk scenarios/mods too!

Ugh! 3 humans in Bryce. You must have some special new tolerance for pain.

Very well done. I like the take on these units. They would fit well in to most SteamPunk style scenarios as well as alt-history ones.

this might be a little of topic but i'd like to ask what steampunk scenarios are. they've been talked about on this thread alot but i don't know what they are.

navis cataphracta (armored ship)

I just saw this thread, and as usual Wyrm, you have outdone yourself. :D you should see the Book I am writing now bud. ;)

@ Ares, I think a better term would be : Loricatus Batalaria. Since the literal translation is Armored Warship. :D

Since cataphractus, cataphracta, cataphractum ADJ armored; clad in mail. Would be better fitting with a land unit. Although technically it could be used, but as in all things Latin, the context of the sentence is what usually determines is used.

Also a technicality is that batalaria, batalariae has a definition of a kind of warship, but its usage is more general than something like Liburnia. So I am of the opinion that if Roma had survived that word may have come to represent the term warship. But as always, this is just my opinion.

I personally don't care what you call it, I never took Latin in school (blame my meddling parents that changed my schedule behind my back). I only call it what it IS.. you guys can call it Tin Tin's Magic Carpet Ride for all I care.

Don't expect any *new material anytime soon, I've stretched myself very thin on projects at the moment.

I'm glad you like it Ken.

Wyrm, I got a question for you, would you mind if I used your Naval Ensign as the one for my Space-Faring Roman short stories and books I am writing? I just love how it looks. :D
