Just use what ever basic graphics program is on board. AFAIK every OS has a basic program shipped.

I whip them up in Paint.net

If there's an icon I like and what a simplified B&W version of it I will typically just trace over it and use that to make a couple variations. I've also made a few "free hand" ones.

The avatar help thread (in computer talk) would be a good place to go for further image editting advice.

XP comes with paint. If it's not installed, you can put in the XP CD, choose Add Windows Components, and install it. If you don't have an XP CD, there's quite a few free image editors. I use GIMP, and while it's more bloated than Paint for basic tasks, it can do the basic stuff as well.

Here's my desktop. Got rid of icons several weeks ago and rather like it without icons. Found the wallpaper on a CFC thread. The location is Brazil.

And my only virtual machine has a pretty boring desktop. But it's got a sweet system clock.

I'm digging the minimalism. I always thought simple was better, but your right, it is slightly creepy...And your taskbar reminds me of how much I hate the default theme for XP.

Had to add in the "-32bit" onto the launch options since I am running on a 64bit Vista.

Thlayli showed us in the NES subforum the below cool picture; I decided to make it my wallpaper because of awesomeness.

Here is my new wallpaper. It was a blue lava lamp, but I had to change the hue to make it match the theme.

Lol, compared to the other desktop you posted, mine is cluttered, but my old desktop setup was ridiculously messy. So though my current one is still cluttered, its a huge improvement from what it was. Unfortunately I have no screenshots of the way it used to be.

I'm digging the minimalism. I always thought simple was better, but your right, it is slightly creepy...And your taskbar reminds me of how much I hate the default theme for XP.
If you're a WAR fan it's not quite as creepy. :D

I was actually trying to find a large enough image to fill the whole screen but then I found that when I centered it and used a matching white background color it looked much cooler.

Ive had the sam one for a while now, so its time for a change!

Isn't typing out "fir" or "firef" or whatnot slower than double clicking on the firefox icon? obv. if your aim is for a clean desktop then launchy is a godsend..

If you want to clean your desktop of icons, then you could just right click and decheck "Show Desktop Icons". I downloaded Launchy anyway for the hell of it :p

I downloaded launchy, and its awesome. I mostly have one program per letter, so it only requires f, enter for firefox, i, enter for itunes, etc. so you are right, launchy=much faster.

For the Non-Vista users. It's esentialy the "My Documents" of older Windows OSes (C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\My Documents). In Vista, the "My Documents" always plops your name on it. The reason why it's blured is that I don't wish to have my name revealed (Same reasons why I blur out my location in weather widgets, chat clients, and Steam).

I tried Launchy out. It's a good idea in principle, but my computer sucks too much to implement it. It's laggy. My quicklaunch bar is still faster.

But, I still recommend it to people who can handle it. It's really nifty.
