Personally I don't have problems with using the same names as in the old game. It will be quite hard to come up with new names anyway as we've used the names of most users already.

Just stick New on the start of some of the old names :D

And we have a few new players so, assuming they stick around, we have some more inspiration for names :)

Why don't we ask each citizen to suggest a namesake, like "Kevia" or "Beckaville" or "Funxusholm" or "Renheim" or "Civ1-addictphalia"........

A list could then be maintained from which the new cities would be named. Cities named be made to "fit" the general personality of the person, in some cases. E.g., mine would likely be one that has central trade potential (as a big trader myself). Good shield city fo a Commie/fundy player. A frontline city for a war-monger. You can't fit all this way, but it might be a factor in helping choose a name :).

The Capital should naturally relate to whatever out Empire's namesake turns out to be. The first cities should probably be after players that served in the first Demo game. Players that served honorably in the first who are not in the second should eventually have a city, too.

Players can "adopt" their namesake and keep a special eye on it by advising it's governor, if the need arises (esp. later in the gme when there are dozens of cities any "yours" might get "lost" in the shuffle)....

I'm just fine by leaving it up to whomever is President at the time. It should be one of the 'perks' of the office. Should the president wish for suggestions from a specific person, that's cool too. I know that in some cases, I asked a few people what they'd like - I think a thread started somewhere as well where people put the name they'd like to have their namesake city carry (as Starlifter suggests).

Nobody ever asked me about Kevholm on our old world. Never was too keen on that one, but it was a surprise to me which was pretty cool nonetheless.

Well it could be a nice idea to do a list like Starlifter said and then the pres could choose cities from the list. Last time I had to wait quite along time for a city...

A list is clearly the best idea but a "neutral" name must be chosen for our capital. Any suggestions....

How about after an ancient city or place?
Sumeria? Babylon? Persepolis? Perhaps the Latin name for a place. Gaulia, Hispania, etc.

We could always do what we did last time and ask TF to suggest a name for the capital. :) Or since the last capital was called Olympia, we could name the next Valhalla, Nirvana or Elysium. Though preferably not Pearl Jam. ;)

Cities can be named using:
- players names
-geographical situation (I usualy name in SP cities like Panama, Suez, Walvisbaai, Bunker Hill etc.)
-geopolitical situation (Hong Kong, Gibraltar, D-Day etc)
-Using the cities production: Science cities can be named after great inventors or scientists (Copernica etc)
-In large games (like this one) adding -Fort, -harbour etc will make it easy to see where to build vet-army and -navy.

Naming cities 'New Whatever' is not a good idea since you will not be able to distinguish the hometown of the unit.

Cities can well be renamed during the game, if this will make gameplay easier when running a large empire.

Captured cities should be renamed by changing just a few letters to reflect their incorporation in a different culture.

I like this idea. We could go for Valhalla or Elysium (nirvana is surely a state of being, not a place?) - or we could pick a literary tribute such as Utopia, flip over and try Distopia, or Bedlam, or try a tribute to Fritz Lang and go for Metropolis.

Hmm, Metropolis first choice for me, but Elysium and Valhalla are good too...

I like the idea of calling it New Olympia :p The other names can be used on other cities...Perhaps we will need to have a vote on this.

germanos does have a point though - unlike Civ 3, we can't just go around calling all the cities New_Whatever because we won't be able to tell the units apart. But New Olympia would be fine for the capital. BFR, I know that nirvana isn't actually a place, but it seems to equate to the others as far as perceptions of heaven go. It may not be a heaven per se, but is an ideal to be attained, even if you are going to be reincarnated at the end of your natural life.

We could name the capital

"Place where spaceship crashed".

If not, I'm game for something new. Valhalla I like, but maybe a poll is indeed in order.

My latin is pretty basic but i think "Regia Civitas" means "The People's Capital" I think this would be a great name for our capital city.

Cool idea anarchy :goodjob:. Using my best latin (read: an online dictionary) I cannot find the latin word for capital, so let's assume you are correct :D. However, I did find that 'Civitas Publicus' means 'City of the People' so that is another latiny name to use. Also it means that the units would be supported by Civ, a (incredibley) minor point, but cool all the same.

Since by landing on AC we're starting the tech tree all over again, one can assume that something caused all the passengers to become really stupid. In this case, I move that we name the capital 'Og' or 'Boo'

Yes but since its a new world and we have forgotten most of our history, the people could name the nearest star to them "Alpha Centauri" So we could actually be trying to fly back to the Sun, depending on whether the Sun is the closest star to AC.

Well you are a new member so you don't have a previous city named after you so there shouldn't be the new problem anyway.

Since we won't have the English or the Romans in this game at any stage then I have plenty of options! :D

York and Eboracum spring to mind, and if we've got the French as opponents then I can have Jorvik as a choice too!
