View Full Version : Modern Privateer
snafusmith Apr 01, 2008, 10:04 PM Something I've always thought should be in the game, but never got around to making. Requested by hun+celt (not wolfshanze, oops!) to use the modern work boat model as a base - it turned out well too.

Bakuel Apr 01, 2008, 10:30 PM It looks excellent and top-notch as all your units due,:) but I was wondering what type of stats would the boat have? On one hand it may be so weak that it's worthless, but on the other, I shudder to think of a three or four of these ganging up on a battleship and taking it out... Or maybe even a transport.
What would you suggest?
Wolfshanze Apr 01, 2008, 10:40 PM Look, just because somebody stole my avatar, doesn't mean I requested it! Somebody else requested it, and they had my Wolf!
I see I'll have to come-up with a unique avatar now.
Oh... and good work... even though I didn't ask for it.
EDIT:
Okay... misidentification problem solved.
snafusmith Apr 01, 2008, 10:51 PM My mistake - hun+celt posted 2 posts below yours in the units request thread and had the same wolf picture.
BTW, now we're even - you got me to change my avatar, and I got you to change yours.
Wolfshanze Apr 01, 2008, 10:58 PM BTW, now we're even - you got me to change my avatar, and I got you to change yours.
Not really... my avatar is cooler! http://forums.profantasysports.com/images/smiles/BANDIT.GIF
hun+celt Apr 01, 2008, 11:08 PM Thank you!!!!!!!! I appreciate the rapid (and perfect) response to my request. It goes into my mod tonight.
And to Wolfshanze: sorry for the avatar hijacking, but hey--a good looking wolf is always going to be a hot commodity. I guess it's a curse we'll have to live with.
Although it's appropriate that this should come up in a thread dealing with piracy...
Wolfshanze Apr 01, 2008, 11:11 PM And to Wolfshanze: sorry for the avatar hijacking, but hey--a good looking wolf is always going to be a hot commodity. I guess it's a curse we'll have to live with.
Eh... I've been lazy about making a custom avatar... your piracy and Snafu's confusion just got me off the fence! ;)
hun+celt Apr 01, 2008, 11:32 PM Oh, and to Bakuel:
Sorry, I got so excited when I saw this unit I didn't even read the posts! I've always thought that transports were overpowered to begin with, so in my mod they've been dropped down to 12. Transports tend to be relatively unarmored and (at best) lightly armed vessels. The only reason I can see for their current rating is that they're steel-hulled and physically large.
I'm going to use these modern pirate ships as:
> 10 with +100% vs. transport (they're not standing up to any armed vessel alone)
> hidden nationality/always hostile (obviously)
> 25% withdrawal (still debating if this could make them too survivable against fighting ships)
> can only operate in coastal waters.
Generally, attacks from these boats occur within several miles of shore although there are some notable exceptions: "The attack against the U.S. cruise ship the Seabourn Spirit offshore of Somalia in November 2005 is an example of the sophisticated pirates mariners face. The pirates carried out their attack more than 100 miles (160 km) offshore with speedboats launched from a larger mother ship. The attackers were armed with automatic firearms and an RPG." quote: Wikipedia, source: The Business Times Singapore. August 14, 2006
Essentially, they will be effective for disrupting trade routes where there is no Navy and for preying on the occasional hapless unescorted transport. I'm debating on making them a national unit to reduce the chance of the AI spamming these, but I'll hold off until I see how the computer utilizes them.

Good one, Snafusmith!
GarretSidzaka Apr 02, 2008, 12:57 AM holy crap snafu!! this is going in 2nd rev!! :D

Chuggi Apr 02, 2008, 04:15 AM Cool idea!
Also, I don't remember that machine gun being mounted on the side of the work boat. ;)
adamamri Apr 02, 2008, 04:44 AM nice job. thank you for the share (long life for you! :))
Ekmek Apr 02, 2008, 11:11 AM I see I'll have to come-up with a unique avatar now.
yeah with your forum activity you should have a unique one ;) I was just expecting something with nazi runes
On topic: wesome unit...now I cang et rid of those rogue workboats I've been using in my personal mod :)
Dom Pedro II Apr 02, 2008, 03:26 PM Too bad they can't pretend to be a workboat until they attack ;)
jkp1187 Apr 03, 2008, 09:02 AM I am going to use this as a special unit that becomes available to Pirates via a random event -- whenever I get the time for modding again. Thanks!
Ballazic Apr 05, 2008, 04:18 PM I wonder if there is a way to make these spawn alot in the modern age as barbarians. It would make naval defence a bigger priority as all of your fishing/clams/shellfish would be endangered
Xenomorph Apr 05, 2008, 04:32 PM I am going to use this as a special unit that becomes available to Pirates via a random event -- whenever I get the time for modding again. Thanks!
Heh heh, I did that yesterday. :D
GoodGame Apr 05, 2008, 09:10 PM
Really nice shading and cool base idea!
Only thing better would be a grungy looking rpg-dude standing in the middle of it with a missile animation. (though maybe that'd be TOO busy looking).
schschon Apr 08, 2008, 03:53 PM I have downloaded and installed the modern privateer to my BTS assets and then units. And I've also tried to install it in the Civ 4 assets and then units folder. The problem that I am having is that the Modern Privateer will not show up in the Civlopedia nor in the game.
Can anyone help?
Тhanks.
hun+celt Apr 09, 2008, 02:37 AM There are a variety of reasons for a unit not showing up (I'm assuming you don't mean that the unit is there, but just appears as a pink ball). If you haven't read it already, sovarn made a basic tutorial on how to add a unit that is very helpful:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=139721
try following this step-by-step to see if there's a file you didn't edit. Otherwise, look to see if you have the right tech/resource/etc to build it or make sure there isn't a conflict if you're adding it to another mod or mod component.
schschon Apr 09, 2008, 12:35 PM Thanks for the reply. I have Civ 4 Gold with the BTS expansion pack added on. Does it matter where I put the new unit; I mean in the Civ 4 assets/units.... or do I need to put it in the BTS assets/units......?? Sorry I'm new to adding units, scenarios, ect. Another question is do I need to replace the Privateer that comes with the BTS expansion pack with this new Modern Privateer? And no, the Modern Privateer wasn't showing up in the Civlopedia, game or anywhere. There was no pink ball or anything. I have read the thread about adding new units, but my questions still remain.
Thanks for your help. :)
Arian May 18, 2008, 04:57 PM AFAIK there is no button for this unit so I made a button based on the pic in the first post.
It's rather simple but better than nothing I suppose...
Hope you like it. :)
