View Full Version : Why Does Civ4 Gold Mod Take So Long To Load?

I do love Civ 4 Gold but each time I want to play it, it takes way too long to load. I've even edited my .ini file to load Civ4.0 Gold at startup. I even have a brand new PC with an AMD quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM. Are other people seeing this issue? Whether I have this mod load up at startup or I select Advanced > Load A Mod from the main menu, it just takes too long. Am I doing something wrong? Why do huge mods like FfH2 not take nearly as long as this one? Just curious. Any info would be appreciated. I want to continue to use Civ 4 Gold but cannot until this loading issue is resolved for me. Once I have it loaded the mod runs just fine.

Thanks for your time!

This is a technical question and has been discussed already in the Technical support thread (post #111 and thereafter). No need to start a new thread with just one simple question.;)

The Gold mod is modular, with all the art left unpacked. Some mods use a format that, in essence, compresses with art files, making them load much more quickly. For a number of reason, we have decided not to go this route, resulting in longer load times.

There is room to cut some excess, though, and we've been talking about trimming the art in such as way as to minimize repetition. Doing so would likely help with load times.

I should note, however, that CIV Gold has much more content (purely from a MB perspective) than other mods, so that adds to it.

Five minutes does seem like a long time but I guess I'm just spoiled concidering that I remember the download times using a 1200 buad modem. At any rate it's well worth the wait!

On the comparison with FFH: animated leaderheads!

As in: FFH has none...

Hmmm... but it does have 157,647 downloads.:mischief:

I'm not implying that FFH is any way bad, on the contrary, it is the most popular mod, so it can't be bad (if you like fantasy ;) )

I was just saying that one of the major memory resource hogs in CIV is the animated LH's and that therefore you have to take that in account in any comparison with FFH, as manooly did in the first post.

This is something I haven't touched upon in the technical thread, which prompted me to post a quick, somwhat cryptic (again!), reply.

...Oh, and one more thing, "downloaded" doesn't necessarily mean, "being played". You might want to ponder about that one, JEELEN.

Hmmm... FFfH threads feedback is also running in the 10,000s.:mischief:

Not sure what your point is (I was trying to make a joke), but downloads are now at 158,881 and counting - which I think isn't bad for a basically singlehandedly created and maintained mod.

Ok, I guess I have to explain then...

In a lot of your posts on CFC you seem to lay an emphasis on download numbers, which in my mind does not say anything about quality of the downloaded mod (or scenario for that matter) in question. Like you said, (sub-)forum activity in the form of feedback gives a much better indication of the mod being played.

Personally I download a lot of stuff and try it out, only to be disappointed by the mod/scenario and I never try it again, as was the case with FFH and when I downloaded some of your scenarios for example.

I never claimed that FFH was a bad mod in any way, but you seem to want to put words in my mouth. Do you even bother reading my explanations or are just having fun trolling around? Keep trying to make jokes and maybe one day you will find a sense of humor which you are currently lacking. I have lost my patience with you and I have placed you on my ignore list.

No need to get personal. The :mischief: smilie was a clear indication I wasn't being all that serious.

And BTW, which scenarios didn't you like and what didn't you like about it? I love some critical feedback. (But since I'm now on your IGNORE LIST, no one will be the wiser. How bout I just put CIV Gold on my ignore list? Saves me a lot of time and effort.)

Greetings,

JEELEN.:hatsoff:

Gentlemen, please.

It's just a gaming community, after all.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, Wyz. Do different rules apply when it's a gaming community? Does it absolve all form of propriety? I think not.

:agree:

I'm sure I don't know what I did to piss Fierabras off, but I am sure it's not intentional. I try and keep personal criticism out of my posts and take offense if other people do not.

Don't know what else to say except: let's put this matter to rest.

Ok, I removed you from my ignore list again, for the off-chance you actually have an important question or something interesting to say :mischief: (clear indication?)

Seriously, this is not the first time you annoyed me and I know for a fact I'm not the only one who gets tired sometimes of your antagonism (or 'joking').

I'll give you some feedback on your scenarios in your scenarios-thread. I intend to write it as constructive criticism, so I hope you will be up for it.

Pount taken - and I look forward to any constructive criticism (always better than download counts).
