View Full Version : Missing tech icons

After reviewing the tech trees in my mod, I've seen that some techs were still missing their icons, and that I'll need a few more icons.

Here is what I need:
- Dark ages / barbarian invasions
- Settling process
- Archery (I would like something like Robin hood during the archery contest)
- Regimental organization (I'd like something more 18th century compared to what I have)
- Economics (but 18th century version, perhas something reminding the East India Company?)
- Mobile artillery (with horse)
- Republic (not the eagle!)
- Trench warfare (I know it was done, but it's no longer there :()
- Great depression (1929 crash)
- Naval power (A WWII battleship)
- Modern sports (perhaps a Olympic ring based icon?)
- Assault rifle
- VTOL
- Aircract carrier catapult (for cold war era)

Will this do for Trench Warfare?

I'm not too happy with the small icon, myself...

Nice! But I agree the small icon is a bit hard to see

These are my first attempts at techs so it took a while to learn the process. Hope you can use some of it. :)

Trenches, small icon was a challenge, I'm afraid it isn't much better as far as clarity.

And here are my many archery creations. Sometimes it's easier to make them all then to chose which one... The ones on the left are from the movie which I've never seen. To me they don't seem to fit the bill but I'll leave that up to you. :)

And modern sports...

Settling process:

Assault rifle: MP44

Republic:

Last but no least the pogo.
VTOL:

Thanks, that's a nice start. But I'm afraid I was clear enough on some of them.

For the VTOL, I need something more like the Harrier, to use for some countries naval aviation.

For Republic, I need an icone for the modern republic, I already have one for ancient era (although I may use yours which seem better).

And for settling process, I may use yours, but I had in mind something more "modern", ie after the barbarian invasions, when the barbarians settled in new areas. So more early medieval looking

This one looks really nice and is identifiable in both sizes!!! And I really like the black and white look (which will be exactly what I need for something I have planned). Any place I can download it yet?

The common problem I see with the small icons is one I struggled with. In the program I work with I can change brightness or contrast +/- 100. By experimentation I've found that most of the time if I adjust both +16 before scaling down to the small icon it is more "readable" & the color values actually end up very close to the large icon. "Sharpening" helps as well.

Another good way to increase visibility is to pick out one of the more noticeable aspects of the picture, i.e. something that is very significant for the image and just zoom in on that aspect. That way one ends up with not just a blurry blob of colors but rather an identifiable image.

Using Photoshop I have a tendency to use either smart sharpen or unsharp mask. Adjusting brightness and contrast I usually do after resizing as well as adjusting shadows and highlights and color balance.

That is a good point if more people did that the small icons would be clearer.

I do also try further adjustments after the resizing. I also agree that sometimes cropping works better. I try both ways - that's why sometimes I post an icon with two versions of the small. Then people can choose whichever one works better for them.

I've been tweaking, do these come closer to the target? (no pun intended... well, originally...)

I did this as much as possible (about half of them) :).

I did do another version of the trench, I liked the other because even if you can't make out much the trench shape was still there but this one might work too...

Also redid some big ones.

If anyone has suggestions for improvement I'm all ears. I rarely fiddle with shadows....

I'll go ahead and release the whole kit and kaboodle when I'm done tweaking. :)

Steph, have you ever considered joining Aircract carrier catapult and VTOL into something like restricted space take off? I don't know how restricted you are for tech space (still awaiting the d'load...hint, hint) but those are pretty close in a mod covering the whole of human history. Just an idea.

If you think you would like one of the archery ones tell me which and I'll tweak a little before uploading.

I'll be uploading most of the above shortly too.
