View Full Version : Mac Team for new Vanilla SGOTM
dr_s Apr 06, 2008, 08:10 AM Any other Mac players interested in playing the new succession GOTM? The description is here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=270451). We'll need five or six players I should think.
The game shouldn't last tooooo long, it's a deity OCC on a tiny map with all possible rivals. Looks like an excellent starting location. Should be fun.
peter grimes Apr 07, 2008, 08:01 AM I'm in - assuming we get enough people :)
mikeyredk Apr 07, 2008, 10:51 AM Already signed up
dojoboy Apr 07, 2008, 11:38 AM Man, that just looks like punishment. How about just a Mac SG game in Warlords? I can be persuaded, as long as we're not called "The Mac Team." How about iWarbadly? :D
AlanH Apr 07, 2008, 11:53 AM You can be called whatever you want to be called.
peter grimes Apr 07, 2008, 07:02 PM iWarbadly works for me ;)
other variations:
iCIV
iTeam
iWasteTime
iAddict
etc :D
mikeyredk Apr 07, 2008, 08:36 PM iWok?
iWonderBuilder?
peter grimes Apr 08, 2008, 01:28 PM iWon't
iWill
iWonder (ripped off from Mike :D)
iDie[ty]
dojoboy Apr 08, 2008, 02:02 PM Hey, I signed up - put iWarbadly in parenthesis, my Mac buddies.
dr_s Apr 08, 2008, 05:08 PM I like iWarBadly, or iDie. But I don't really care about the name.
BTW, I've played a couple practice games. I have no idea how to win this. But it seems like it will be fun.
peter grimes Apr 08, 2008, 06:10 PM There may not be a way to win this. Seriously. The awards may simply go to the teams that last the longest - quite a change from the norm, I'd say :D
vyeh Apr 09, 2008, 08:51 AM BTW, I've played a couple practice games.
Just lurking. Where did you find the practice game?
dojoboy Apr 09, 2008, 09:12 AM Just lurking. Where did you find the practice game?
He just set up the conditions in a custom game.
dr_s Apr 09, 2008, 10:11 AM What dojoboy said. I also used world builder to make the starting position resemble the screenshot from the signup thread. Mostly I'm trying to get a sense of the flavor of this particular setup. I've played OCC, but not on deity, and certainly not on a tiny map with 18 civs.
vyeh Apr 09, 2008, 12:28 PM Out of curiousity (I guess this question goes to AlanH), is the SGOTM only randomly generated or is a moderator (e.g. AlanH) involved?
AlanH Apr 09, 2008, 12:43 PM Certainly not me. Since I have never played a Civ4 game beyond a few turns, you wouldn't want anything I might create
Gyathaar is the game designer. Yes, it is generated randomly ... and then tweaked to a greater or lesser extent to meet his nefarious objectives.
peter grimes Apr 12, 2008, 01:55 PM I'm having trouble setting up a practice game. Whenever I select a Tiny world, it restricts the number of AI to 2 (plus a barb). How can I add the other 16 :shakeshead) civs?
I tried starting with the Earth18civ scenario, but I don't know how to shrink that world to the tiny size.
A test game won't be too much help if it's not on a tiny map, with all 18 civs.
Any ideas?
AlanH Apr 12, 2008, 01:58 PM You can edit the WorldBuilder save - it's just text. (I have no idea how Gyathaar did it, I'm just throwing this in)

Go into Custom Game. On the left hand side at the top you'll see your civ followed by two rows of AI civs. The fourth row will show 'Closed'. Change the drop down to 'AI'. Carry on changing the row that says 'Closed' to 'AI' until you reach the 18th row. You can then choose the AI cib for each row or let the game choose.
peter grimes Apr 12, 2008, 06:14 PM Thanks for the advice - If I am successful in this, I'll try to post a save here so that other people can practice :D
peter grimes Apr 13, 2008, 07:06 AM OKay, I generated a save. The start isn't a perfect copy of the screenshot that Alan posted, but I think it has the same flavor: High food, mostly forested grass. It would have been nice if it had at least marble or stone, but so be it.
The turn I settled, I was given a preview of what we're up against

I've played through to about 150ad, and I'm still alive, treading water. My basic strategy was to keep everyone happy, trade monopoly techs for all I could get, and don't rock the boat. If I get some more time today, I'll try a different tack: War
peter grimes Apr 15, 2008, 07:20 PM No feedback yet??? :gripe:
The game commences on April 24 - so we don't have much time for mucking about here!! Let's play some more practice games and get familiar with this beast :hammer:
We also should try to recruit a couple more people :help:
mikeyredk Apr 15, 2008, 07:37 PM You need to replicate the layout of the sgtom. Plus this isn't a secure thread lets save the real discussion when we get our thread in the SGTOM subforum
AlanH Apr 16, 2008, 03:28 AM so we don't have much time for mucking about here
There isn't a rule that says you have to start *playing* on 24th. Time was that team threads would open on the start date.
It could be argued that there is a competitive disadvantage to rushing into the game, as your progress graphs get seen by other teams, some of whom are extremely adept at reading them.
peter grimes Apr 16, 2008, 06:52 PM Points well-taken
I'll contact the members of the last mac team who haven't yet expressed an interest - couldn't hurt, right? ;)
